AUGUST 2011

FC Schalke 04 0 - 1 Bayer Leverkusen
1. Bundesliga
kiessling-stefan-leverkusen-514.jpg

The season got off to the worst possible start for Schalke, losing to a last minute goal from summer-target Stefan Kießling. Schalke had dominated possession for the majority of the game, and created chances too, but Huntelaar was uncharacteristically wasteful, perhaps because his head had been turned by offers from Atletico and Tottenham, naturally rejected. Nevertheless, Schalke were punished for their impotence in front of goal when Kießling stole free from his man to slide past Neuer.

Sturm Graz 0 - 4 FC Schalke 04
Europa League, 4th Qualifying Rnd, 1st Leg
Annan (11), Rakitic (67), Huntelaar (73), Farfan (85)

Schalke got back to winning ways in quite some style this evening, effectively sealing the tie before the return leg. Annan started us off with an absolute corker, latching on to a headed clearance to slam home from 30 yards, his first goal for Schalke since joining last summer. Rakitic, a substitute on the hour mark, then doubled the advantage, edging past his man before lashing in a screamer of his own. Huntelaar then showed his real potency in front of goal, running on to a great Kenia through ball before sliding underneath the keeper, before substitute Farfan wrapped things up with 5 minutes to go, lashing home after cutting inside.

Hannover 96 2 - 3 FC Schalke 04
1. Bundesliga
Metzelder (36), di Santo (37), Rakitic (78)
rakitic_BM_Bayern__1030720p.jpg

This game was far more one-sided than the scoreline might suggest, as Schalke returned to winning ways in the league. Metzelder headed home a corner after half an hour, only to be pegged back moments later by Abdellouae. At half time, the manager then brought on debutant Franco di Santo, and he was only on the pitch a minute, before he latched on to Farfan's through ball before cooly sliding home. Carlitos then drew Hannover level again and it looked like Schalke were going to throw away what should have been a comfortable win until Rakitic picked up di Santo's through ball to race past two defenders before rounding the keeper and giving Schalke the three points.

FC Schalke 04 2 - 1 Sturm Graz (Schalke win 6-1 on aggregate)
Europa League, 4th Qualifying Round, 2nd Leg
Farfan (54), Aogo (65)
ma-wechsel-transfermarkt-dennis-diekmeier-hamburger-sv-dennis-aogo-nelson-valdez-psv-eindhoven-borussia-dortmund.jpg

Schalke fielded a second string side for this match, with Stefan Meyer making his professional debut at the tender age of 16. Playing alongside Grafite up front, they caused trouble, but were caught on the break after just 22 minutes, as Graz took a lead into the break. But in the second half, Schalke moved up a gear, Farfan steering a header into the back of the net, before Aogo dazzled the Graz defence with some sublime tricks before chipping the onrushing keeper for his first goal for the club. Schalke qualify for the group stages.

Karlsruhe SC 0 - 5 FC Schalke 04
1. Bundesliga
Höwedes (4, 45+1), Huntelaar (13), di Santo (50, 64)
disanto.jpg

Schalke blew newly-promoted Karlsruhe apart, with even German talisman Klose missing a number of crucial opportunities for the home side. Höwedes headed his side into the lead early on, to settle the nerves and from then on, it was easy pickings, Huntelaar grabbing the second 10 minutes later, deflecting a powerful Annan shot past the goalkeeper. Benny then added a third on the stroke of half time, and in the second half, it became the di Santo show. The 22 year old former Chelsea player worked his socks off and was rewarded, his first a high blast into the net after expertly controlling an Annan through ball, and his second latching on to Kenia's through ball before faking past the defender and tucking into the far corner. A superb win for Schalke who have got back to winning ways in the Bundesliga.

FC Schalke 04 3 - 0 VfL Bochum
1. Bundesliga
Huntelaar (5, 56), Kenia (80)
klaas-jan-huntelaar-goal-real-240.jpg

After finally deciding where his loyalties lie, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has gone about once more showing the poaching skills that have made him legendary in the Bundesliga. Just 5 minutes were on the clock when he picking up Theophile-Catherine's lovely through ball to slam home past the keeper. Bochum were then reduced to ten men, and Schalke took advantage, Huntelaar tapping in a rebound from Rakitic's shot before substitute Kenia scored a wonder goal, receiving a pass from Holtby before dribbling past two players into the box and slamming in off the far post. It's a key season for Kenia, and he's showing that he has quality.

Manager's Thoughts
"I'm absolutely delighted with how this month has turned out. It started on a sour note, a loss to Leverkusen never a good thing for us, but we played well and that was key, because we knew it was a matter of time until the results started coming. The new players have gelled, particularly Aogo and di Santo who have both become key cogs in this side, and I can't wait for September, and the beginning of the Europa League."

There's never an easy draw in the Europa League, but Schalke's task was made harder when they were drawn with two giants, Genoa of Italy and Olympiakos of Greece - the third team being Austria Wien.

September 2011

1899 Hoffenheim 1 - 1 FC Schalke 04
1. Bundesliga
Höwedes (44)
fus_int_ger_schalke_hoffenheim_body_g.2015994.jpg

After goal gluts in the previous two games, the fans were expecting more of the same against table-toppers Hoffenheim but were dissapointed by an abject Schalke performance. Felipe Caicedo, a new signing at the Rhien-Neckar-Arena, gave Hoffenheim the lead with a nice header before Höwedes levelled on half-time, leaving the match as a draw.

Olympiakos Piraeus 1 - 1 FC Schalke 04
UEFA Europa League, Group Stage
Metzelder (37)
Diogo.jpg

Schalke escaped with a point in Greece, as the Europa League truly kicked off this afternoon. Olympiakos had sustained periods of pressure and were rewarded when Diogo tapped in after a header from Veron was saved, but Metzelder rose high to head his side level once more, giving Schalke a decent away point to start the campaign.

FC Schalke 04 2 - 0 Eintracht Frankfurt
1. Bundesliga
Jurado (47), Wijnaldum (87)
Georginio_Wijnaldum_Vitesse.gif

After Eintracht did the double over Schalke last term, many fans were fearing the worst, but Jurado did his best to dispel those fears, playing a one-two with the superb di Santo before smashing home for 1-0. Schalke were by far the better side for the majority of the game, young striker Franco di Santo especially impressive as he laid on Wijnaldum with 5 minutes to go, who smashed home brilliantly from a tight angle to give Schalke a very impressive win.

FC Schalke 2 - 0 FC St. Pauli
DFB-Pokal, 2nd Rnd
di Santo (30), Aogo (41)
scolari-hails-franco-di-santo-415x275.jpg

Schalke progressed to the next round of the German national cup, with two new signings getting on the scoresheet. Di Santo again impressed, working his socks off and he got his rewards when Morena misplaced a pass, with young Franco on hand to capitalise, sliding home the weak ball. And Aogo topped things off just before half time, running on to Kenia's through ball to pass home and send his side through.

Werder Bremen 1 - 1 FC Schalke 04
1. Bundesliga
Huntelaar (53)
Werder-Bremen-v-Cologne-Hugo-Almeida-celeb_2495524.jpg

Bremen had Hugo Almeida to thank for escaping with anything in this game, his goal proving enough to hold Schalke just at bay. Schalke dominated the first half hour, but were caught on the break, Frings crossing in and Almeida slamming home from inside the box. Huntelaar levelled just after half-time, but thanks to a number of wasted chances, and an injury to Franco di Santo, Schalke were left to curse their luck, dropping two more points in the title race.

FC Schalke 04 8 - 0 Austria Wien
UEFA Europa League, Group Stages
Grafite (1), Huntelaar (14, 18, 56, 60), Wijnaldum (26), Jurado (42), Radzkov o.g. (72)
klaas-jan-huntelaar-jubel-514.jpg

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's 4 goal haul and some sublime football absolutely destroyed a baffled Austria Wien, who never even started the game. Grafite got the ball rolling early on, tackling Tshabalala before running in and blasting into the roof of the net. Huntelaar added a superb double, before young Wijnaldum grabbed his 3rd of the season with a close finish. Jurado then dashed into the box and slammed into the net, before Huntelaar first completed his hat-trick with a guided header, and then made it 4 for the afternoon when he side footed in a Holtby cross. Austria Wien were completely bewildered and even managed to turn an innocuous cross into their own goal with 20 minutes to go. A real message to the rest of the teams in the Europa League from Schalke, and a sign of their true potential.

Manager's Thoughts
"A superb month, topped with that unbelievable performance against Wien; they were swept away by our guile, our clinical finishing and above all our confidence, which is starting to seep from the very pores of these players. I'm slightly concerned about the three-week absence of di Santo who has become pivotal to our game, but we have sufficient cover for him, and I think we can move on next month to even better performances."

P.S. Please comment if you're reading, thanks :)

That forward line is developing into one of the best in the world... and the Austria Wien game proves it :)

FC Schalke 04 2 - 3 VFL Wolfsburg
1. Bundesliga
Holtby (24, 58)
les-revelations-de-la-ligue-1-kader-keita_diaporama.jpg

Manager Illyroy stormed out of the stadium after his side threw away a decent leader against Wolfsburg this afternoon. Edin Dzeko gave Wolfsburg an early lead after quarter of an hour, but Holtby levelled with a wonderful solo goal. He then added a second in the second half, getting behind the defence to latch on to Annan's long ball with a fine volley into the roof. But in the last 15 minutes, substitute Kader Keita twice got in behind Theophile-Catherine to slam home past the goalkeeper and send the manager mad. Schalke were robbed after a great team performance, but lack of concentration cost them a vital 3 points.

Hertha BSC 0 - 1 FC Schalke 04
1. Bundesliga
Metzelder (90)
RTEmagicP_100721_metzelder_reginiussen.jpg

Schalke grinded out a decent victory at the Olympiastadion this afternoon. The timing was late but no Hertha fan will deny that Schalke deserved to win. Huntelaar skewed a number of decent chances wide of the goal, whilst di Santo's fine headed effort crashed off the goalkeepers crossbar. But with little time remaining, Metzelder rose highest to head home a corner and give Schalke a decent win.

Genoa 1 - 1 FC Schalke 04
UEFA Europa League, Group Stages
di Santo (2)
Franco_Di_Santo_280_853985a.jpg

Schalke will be the happiest of the two teams after escaping the Luigi Ferraris with a point. They took an early lead when di Santo chased a backpass, blocking Amelia's clearance before slamming home left footed to give Schalke the lead. They pressed for another 10 minutes before Genoa got a foothold on the game. They scored just after the break to level thanks to Forestieri, but were unable to add another, with Neuer in superb form. Schalke are now top of the group on goal difference.

FC Schalke 4 - 0 FC Köln
1. Bundesliga
Kenia (9, 24), Farfan (33), Huntelaar (48)
439x.jpg

On their day, Schalke are one of the best teams in this division, and they showed that again at the Veltins-Arena today, thanks to two fantastic solo goals from the ever-improving Levan Kenia. He dribbled around 3 players before sliding home with just 10 minutes gone, before adding a second, di Santo teeing him up, before he dodged past one player and slammed home left-footed past the stranded goalkeeper. Farfan picked up Theophile-Catherine's pass and slammed into the net, and Huntelaar joined in the fun, finishing a great move with a well taken finish into the bottom corner of the net. A fine victory that sends Schalke 2nd.

Werder Bremen 1 - 0 FC Schalke 04
DFB-Pokal, 3rd Rnd
Aaron-Hunt-1.jpg

Schalke were unfortunate to leave the tournament at this early stage, but paid for some slack finishing. They were unable to pick up from the victory at Koeln and were forced to regret that when Hunt smacked home a rebound from Almeida's shot with 5 minutes to go. It wasn't a goal that was coming in any way, but you can sense from the amount of misses that Schalke had that they were bound to be punished, and so it proved. Werder Bremen through to the quarter-finals.

Borussia Dortmund 1 - 0 FC Schalke 04
1. Bundesliga
628620804-supercup_475px.9.jpg

Schalke's manager had every right to be furious with his side who failed to convert more chances, and ended up on the end of a very unfair defeat, their 3rd to bitter rivals Dortmund in the past 3 encounters. With no di Santo, Barreto stepped in to fill his boots, but missed a number of crucial chances, as did players such as Wijnaldum, Kenia and Farfan. And they were punished on the break, when with a minute to spare, Kehl slid a ball across the field to Macheda who hit it first time under a furious Neuer, who was left exposed. Another late loss, and they are starting to cost die Königsblauen.

Manager's Thoughts
"It's so frustrating managing this side. They have such natural quality, and they play well as a team, but those momentary lapses of concentration in front of goal, and at the back end are costing us so dear. It's my job to eradicate those mistakes and I'll do my best with the lads, but there's only so much you can do. We should have had 6 points both against Wolfsubrg and Dortmund, and we should be through to the semi's of the DFB-Pokal but instead we're 3rd and out of the Cup. Never mind, we push on into October and my mind is fully focused on progressing from our Europa League group and pushing forward in the league."

YOUNGEST EVER EUROPA LEAGUE GOALSCORER GIVES SCHALKE A VITAL 3 POINTS AGAINST GENOA

Schalke 1:0 Genoa
Europa League Group Stages
rakitic1.jpg

16 year old Stefan Meyer is mobbed after scoring the winner
Schalke fans left the Veltins-Arena delighted after seeing the latest academy product hitting the headlines with a wonderful finish. Brought on to replace the injured di Santo, Stefan Meyer was thrown into the deep end against a very tough defence, Gamberini being a full Italian international. But he wasted no time endearing himself to the home fans, scoring minutes after being brought on. Metzelder's header forward seemed relatively innocuous, but Meyer brought the ball down deliciously before turning on the spot and slamming into the corner away from the corner. 3 points in the bag and Schalke lead their group.

EARLY GOALS FROM SCHALKE SEE OFF NEWLY-PROMOTED BIELEFELD

Metzelder was dominant for Schalke all day, and thoroughly deserved his goal
Schalke got their league campaign back on track after that dissapointing loss against Dortmund with a decent victory against Bielefeld, who were outclassed. Metzelder got the ball rolling before Georginio Wijnaldum scored a fine finish, dashing behind the defence to slot home a delightful di Santo pass. Schalke now second ahead of Bayern, but still trailing rivals Dortmund.

DUO SCORE SECOND GAME RUNNING TO DEFEAT PLUCKY FREIBURG

Freiburg 1:2 Schalke
1. Bundesliga
0,,5011577_1,00.jpg

Schalke celebrate Wijnaldum's winner
Freiburg were dominated for the entirety of this game, and Schalke were unlucky not to score more than the two that they finished with. Madiati gave Freiburg an early lead, poaching on an unusual Neuer mistake to slot home into an empty net. But Schalke had an immediate answer, winning themselves a penalty 5 minutes later, only for it to be superbly saved. Lewis Holtby picked himself up though and was in the thick of it again minutes later, crossing home for Metzelder to score. And Schalke added more pressure, Wijnaldum getting his second in as many goals to give Schalke a very important away victory.

BRILLIANT SCHALKE DISMISS CRITICS WITH A CRUSHING VICTORY AGAINST HSV

Schalke 7:1 HSV
1. Bundesliga
schalke4_dpa_512.jpg

Huntelaar put in a world class performance, setting up 6 goals
Schalke backed up their title claims with a superb victory against a lacklustre HSV. Franco di Santo grabbed himself a wonderful hat-trick, whilst Kenia got a brace and Metzelder snatched a third goal in three games. To top things off, Stefan Meyer (16) grabbed his first Bundesliga goal with 20 minutes to go.
Franco di Santo got the ball rolling after 10 minutes, collecting a Huntelaar pass before dashing past his man and sliding home comfortably. Kenia, who was instrumental in midfield then made it 2-0 with a wonderful free-kick, before Metzelder headed home wonderfully from Holtby's corner. Franco di Santo then scored a quick brace before half-time to give him his first senior hat-trick, smashing home a wonderful Huntelaar through ball before a great solo goal. Kenia, who is really starting to show some potential this season, then got his second with a crashing long range effort before HSV pulled back a consolation goal through Marcus Berg.
But to make the home fans truly happy, Stefan Meyer, on at half-time for di Santo who picked up a knock, grabbed his first domestic goal after an hour, showing his poacher's instincts to slot home a wonderful Huntelaar through-ball.
Huntelaar grabbed the man of the match award with an unprecedented 6 assists

SCHALKE EASE INTO THE KNOCKOUT STAGES OF THE EUROPA LEAGUE WITH A CONVINCING HOME VICTORY

Schalke 3:0 Olympiakos
Europa League Group Stages
alexander-baumjohann-14685281-mbqf,templateId=renderScaled,property=Bild,height=349.jpg

Baumjohann's winner confirmed a stunning victory for Schalke
Schalke's superb month climaxed in them crusing through to the Knockout stages of the Europa League in some style.
Metzelder's fourth in four games got the momentum building. Olympiakos rarely threatened, much less so than in Greece on the opening day of the campaign, and Schalke got their reward for continuous pressure when Kenia was tripped whilst running in the box at pace. Aogo stepped up to convert and the day was made better when Baumjohann superbly chested down a cross, before slamming high into the roof of the net, a great end to a great month.

STEFAN MEYER DELIGHT AT BECOMING YOUNGEST BUNDESLIGA GOALSCORER
View attachment 108591
The latest Schalke protege, Stefan Meyer, has announced himself delighted with how things are going, after becoming the league's youngest ever goalscorer at just 16 years and 185 days old. Some are already comparing him to German legend Olivier Bierhoff, but time will tell how his future progresses.

SCHALKE MANAGER CHALLENGES HIS SIDE TO MAKE HISTORY

raul_jubelkette_692x389.jpg

Sam Illyroy today challenged his men to make history in German football by winning both the Europa League and the Bundesliga.
Speaking exclusively for ard.de, Illyroy had this to say:
"I think we're now at the stage where we have a lot of good players coming of age, and really showing what they're made of and if you were to ask me right here and now do I think these lads have got what it takes, I'd say **** right they do, and they proved that against Hamburg a week ago.
We've got a strong spine and a lot of strength in depth and I think it's now up to the boys to make the rest of the world stand up and take notice."
Strong words so early in the season, and it will be interesting to see how the squad react to this challenge.
