Great question that i dont really have the answer too. Just trundling through the summer and wondering the same. Enjoying the game to a degree but feel like there's no real challenge already. Only thing were not top dog in is money in the bank and developing youth players. Starting another save doesnt appeal either so i imagine i'll keep with this save for at least another month till i get my holidays from work in March
 

Season 4
2017/18




Pre Season
We add mostly squad players with 1 for the starting team. Still spend £125m though. Mean while sell back up and squad players but still manage to recover £89m.
These changes i think has the team primed to go on and win it all this season before blooding some more youth players which im really struggling to get on board.
Quiet summer in the Managerial merry go round.

Champions League - Win


A second treble was sweet but can we go after the Quad? The squad is far stronger than last year and has more depth so i expect no less.

Liverpool left a min fee so why not take away one of your rivals best players? Di Maria has been questionable on the left wing so he has serious competition for his place this season.

Lots of big teams had offers in on Mateo and i've not had him for a few years since FM12 i think. Will replace Herrera and a upgrade i think! Signing him here will lead to someone in the current midfield leaving next summer.


Bryan Cristante - DM

2 Youth defenders join but its becoming harder & harder to get value for money into the youth team.

Marcos Rojo would have stayed but his release clause was met so he went off. Ander Herrera was down to a back up player so when he asked to leave i was happy for him to go but did not expect the £40m bid to come from Bayern. Back up players that we didnt really need or were never progressing to be 1st team players were Silviu Lung Jr, James Wilson & Zakaria Bakkali with another few leaving on loan.

Chelsea
3 Signings for the 1st team William Carvalho joins after a unsuccessful spell in Madrid, i missed a trick here. French winger Alex Lacazette joins after multiple goal season in France. No outgoings of note as they try and build a squad to challenge United.


Arsenal
Two squad signings. Fabio Coentrao another Portugese player i could have grabbed for back up although im sure Arsenal will be starting him. And Steven Caulker who will surely be back up. There outgoings stun me. Ozil to Inter for £7m & Carzola to Espanyol for £675k

Liverpool
No replacement for Sterling but adding Paco Alcacer, Ruben Neves & Jordan Stones will give them depth to hopfully challenge the top 3. With Sterling a pile of back up players leave including Skrtel, Jordan Rhodes, Toby Alderweireld & Milan Badelj.



Man City
Man City sign nobody! Then relese Dzeko, Clichy & Fernadinho. Dzeko went to hull the others went abroad.


Tottenham
One big signing in Carlos Vela from Sociedad. Eric Dier joins QPR for £6m and John Stones joins Liverpool. There surprise of the summer was Roberto Soldado leaving on a free to Real Betis.

Thats not a bad full 25 man squad. With the exception of Jovic there all star players for any Premiership team. Kovacic will challenge Mata for the start as will Sterling to Di Maria.

Great start for Liverpool. They have the top 2 league scorers and there former back up ist 3rd. Chelsea loosing to Swansea was the shock of the day.

No messing from the main man today. He got 4 after his Portugal team mate Nani got the scoring under way. Stoke may be in relegation trouble if the 1st month is anything to go by.

We've won the group! Its been in the bag for a while but to do it with 10 men for most of the game. The winner at the death was a sweet reward for making Ronaldo play 90 minutes

Could've been worse, I played as Benfica and on the final day lost to Sporting 3-2 after being 2 nil up. And amazingly Porto won the league after winning 3-0. Got my revenge the next season by doing the quadruple!

19 goals in 2 games! Not quite up to the 10 we put past Spurs last year but the best way i can think of to get the title challenge back on track.

Liverpool & Chelsea drew 0-0 to put us back in the hunt. Everton got there best result in the past 2 seasons beating our next opposition Man City 2-1

Kept the side pretty strong as i really want to win this cup for the 1st time and considered City as a dangerous opponent at this stage. As a reward we get a trip to Liverpool for the 4th round. Sigh!

AHHH Stinking cheating Chelsea ruin our amazing home run. Beat up De Gea and got a dodgy penalty. Would have banked on us scoring more than 1 at home though.

Only saving grace was Liverpool drawing at Hull. Swansea make there 1st decent start to join us in the top 4 while Arseal miss the same chance by loosing to Hull who tie with them in 5th. Spurs drew again at Norwich.

Depay has been excellent for me so far. top scorer last season. My strongest operator on the left side. Januzaj on the right is pretty special.

I play a 4-1-4-1. My two CM spots, one as AMC and one as CM, are occupied normally by Herrera and Di Maria. Mata plays backup to Di Maria, Tielmans backup to Herrera. Been toying with the idea of changing Herrera. Has done really well for me in all my United saves.

Was Kovacic a player you knew from previous iterations or something who has come to light for you during the course of the save?

I lost my saves due to a PC reformat( hadn't saved to cloud) so I'd lost my save where I'd acquired Gotze. Trying to tempt him from Bayern but he's more expensive this time round. Although again, unhappy at Bayern and wants a move.

Having a big toss up between Koke, Pogba and Gotze.
 
I'd say Pogba if you need a CM if it's AM then Gotze. I used Kovacic in a save in fm 12 or 13 really can't remember when but he was cheep and amazing. Not had him in this save but if anyone knows his PA let me know as im curious as to how he would do by replacing Mata

I guess I probably don't "need" one immedaitely, just feel if I want to really take a grip of the league and CL I should look into replacing Herrera.

Di Maria has been pretty good in that AMC role, but would maybe prefer having him operate out wide left. Although that means dropping Depay, or Di Maria.

Maybe these are the tough decision to make if I want to challenge on more fronts!
