its not new though. i also retired the number 4 shirt for cesc at arsenal in fm11. it happens to players who have stayed in the club for a really long time and retire at that club and have played a huge role to the club succes, in your case messi scoring 679.

I haven't played him for England for a long time though, lol (replaced him with younger players quite a few years ago). He used to be a natural CB, but now he's only "competent" in that position. I have no idea what happened.
