Part III - Tunisia vs. Thailand

Puel and Garde took their seats, Tunisia scarves and flags in hand. This game had a lot to live up to, especially after the incredible Cairo derby the day before. As the players warmed up, the two Lyonnais saw a few familiar faces. Karim Haggui, who plays for Hannover, Fahid Ben Khalfalla of Bordeaux and PAOK's Anis Boussaidi. In the Thai line-up were talismanic hitman Sarayoot Chaikamdee, captain Nataporn Phanrit and veteran midfielders Therdsak Chaiman and Dataksorn Thonglao. None of whom Puel or Garde recognised.

Soon, the stage was set for this international friendly. The 65,000 seater Stade 7 November, reputedly one of the best stadiums in Africa, was full to the brim, despite the low importance of the fixture, as well as the relatively unknown opponents.

The luminous green shirts of the referee and his partners were the first to emerge, before the bright yellow of Thailand's new kit and the deep red of Tunisia's away shirt became visible. The two sides walked out and lined up before the fans. The massive arena burst into life as the two teams sang their national anthems, and shook hands before the game finally began.

The referee's whistle started the game off, which saw Tunisia dominate from the outset. An early cross from Chaouki Ben Saada was met by the head of Mohamed Amine Chermiti, but Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool tipped the ball over the bar. Ben Saada took the resulting corner, which swerved round and cannoned off the bar, before Thai captain Nataporn Phanrit cleared the ball away.

Tunisia continued to press until the 14th minute, when Ben Saada, at it again on the left wing, beat the full-back and sent the cross in, but no-one was there to convert the chance. The Thai keeper collected the ball with relative ease and hoofed it upfield. It was headed on by Suchao Nutnum and into the path of Sarayoot Chaikamdee, who scored his first goal in three games for his nation, and his 30th international goal. A shock lead on the counter from the visitors, and Tunisia looked shellshocked.

Tunisia 0, Thailand 1.

Tunisia kicked off and passed the ball around their own half, seemingly wary of going forward, to the dismay of their disgrunled fans. Having failed to do anything in the African Nations Cup, and failing to qualify for the World Cup, the pressure was on Faouzi Benzarti to get results back on track. And this score did nothing for his position, and his side's confidence.

They eventually found the confidence to go at Thailand, and pressured for the rest of the half, but Thailand held up.

Half-time, Thailand in the lead.

The second half began with Tunisia pressuring again, and when Ben Saada's long ball forward was met by Lassad Nouioui, he slid it past the keeper annd wheeled away to celebrate.

Tunisia 1, Thailand 1.

Thailand kicked off and lost the ball almost immediately to Oussama Darragi, who played the ball out wide to Ben Saada. The man who was running the show took it by one and played an early ball into the box and it was met by Mohamed Amine Chermiti, but the keeper made the save. Tunisia came forward again, and Darragi's long range shot rocketed off the bar. But later, Karim Haggui's long ball forward was cushioned down by Chermiti, who thumped the ball against the post and in.

Tunisia 2, Thailand 1.

Chermiti ran towards the fans and held his arms aloft as his team-mates embraced him. The Tunisian manager could be seen breathing a sigh of relief as his team took the lead.

Thailand kicked off again, with the sea of red and white behind them in the Tunisian fans, in full voice. The War Elephants tried to get up the field to equalise, but Mejdi Traoui stopped them in their tracks and played a high ball out wide to Ben Saada. He beat the full-back and cut a pass back to the edge of the box, where Oussama Darragi was lying in wait. He coolly, but powerfully, slotted the ball in the bottom corner.

Tunisia 3, Thailand 1.

Thailand's hopes of a shock win had been torn apart within 15 minutes of the restart of the game, Tunisia shooting out the blocks like a pack of hungry cheetahs, pouncing on the hapless Thai gazelles.
Tunisia's top performing 'cheetah' was Chaouki Ben Saada, who was ripping through Thailand's right hand side of the pitch, time and time again. He did it once more, beating Sutee Sutsomskit and Cholratit Jantakam before sending a cross into the box, however, the keeper climbed above all others to claim the ball.

Soon, however, Tunisia got another chance, and right-back Bilel Ifa went on a surging run past the halfway line, before offloading the ball to Oussama Darragi, whose cutting through ball to Mohamed Chermiti, who chipped the keeper sprinting towards him, before the ball trickled over the line, as Chermiti got his second goal of the game.

Tunisia 4, Thailand 1.

A fantastic fightback from Tunisia, and the crowd was loving it. Four goals in 30 minutes had brought Thailand back to earth with a bang. The War Elephants had no way back into the game. Their manager, Man Utd hero Bryan Robson, was sitting in his dugout, staring at the pitch in devastation.

And it wasn't over yet. Yet again, five minutes from the end, it was Ben Saada destroying Thailand's right flank and crossing the ball in, where Chermiti was there again, this time for his hat-trick. He sprinted towards the Tunisian fans, leaping over the hoarding and through the athletics track to do so, and embraced them. He was booked for his over-exuberant celebration, but he didn't care. No matter how poor the opposition is, a hat-trick feels good.

Tunisia 5, Thailand 1.

And when the whistle went, the roar of approval from the home crowd was an indication of how triumphantly Tunisia won, five goals in the second half leaving the Thai visitors broken and dismayed.

Claude Puel turned to Remi Garde, as they exited the Stade 7 Novembre following the match, and saw him reading the match programme. Puel remembered what Garde had said to him the night before, and smiled.
"Looking at the pictures?" he chuckled, and Garde did the same.

They had to head for the airport once again, because next they were off to Bahrain to look at the sporting infrastructure and youth academies there.

Just caught up with this mate, another excellent read. It's really refreshing to see a well written story with perfect grammar and punctuation. Keep it up, it's easily my favourite story around at the minute
