Hi and welcome, I’ve been looking forward to doing a series on my local club for a while and have finally bit the bullet. Any feedback would be great.

Haverhill Rovers (The Rovers)
Founded 1886
Semi-Professional
English Eastern Counties League Premier Division
Stadium - New Croft
Capacity 3000 (200 seated)

Steve Rands has been handed his first management job at his local club Haverhill Rovers. Rovers have offered Rands a amateur contract with no wage.
With no staff I found free agents to fill what I needed.
Assistant Manager - Ed Walters, Amateur Contract
Head of Youth Development - Ali Train, Part Time £60 p/w until 30/6/19
Goalkeeping Coach - Louis Hrebeniak, Part Time £50 p/w until 30/6/19
Fitness Coach - Matthew Kingwell, Part Time £55 p/w until 30/6/19
Under 23 Manager - Paul Fitchett, Part Time £60 p/w until 30/6/19
Under 18 Manager - Jamie Perkins, Part Time £60 p/w until 30/6/19

With the squad very thin on the ground 12 players without contracts were invited for trials to fill the gaps in the squad whilst also pulling the best potential youth players into the main squad for preseason. The squad is made up of youth and amateur contracts apart from two players, 29 year old Centre-Back Sam Holmes and 32 Year Old Experienced Striker Daniel Cornwall. With no transfer budget and a wage budget of £186 p/w free transfers and youth will be my best options.

With 5 preseason games ahead of us before starting the season with an FA Cup First Prelim match I’m hopeful I can get a squad together for the season.

Expectations
Eastern Counties Premier - Top Half Finish
FA Cup - Reach First Prelim Round
FA Vase - Reach First Round

Let the preseason begin!

July 2018

And so it begins,

After bringing a few players in on trial the following have been signed to amateur contracts:
29 Year Old Right Back Matt Plummer
18 Year Old Left Back Ryan Kirwan
23 Year Old Goalkeeper Charlie Crowley
25 Year Old Right Back Ryan Grocott
19 Year Old Left Back Cameron Jones
18 Year Old Goalkeeper Jack Collins
18 Year Old Centre Midfielder Malachi Peynardo-Peart
18 Year Old Right and Left Midfielder Finley Dopson
28 Year Old Centre Midfielder Sam Clarke
28 Year Old Centre Midfielder Kieran English
29 Year Old Centre Midfielder Daryl Robson
These players have plugged the gaps in the squad and unless someone amazing comes along I’m not looking to add anyone else.

Having decided on a 442 formation using custom wing play I should have enough depth to see out the season.

17 Year Old Centre-Back Nicky Pearce is being courted by several clubs. The highly rated youngster is only on an amateur contract so could choose to leave at any time. He has said he feels pressured by the interest in him so hopefully he stays.

Bonus’s for the season have been finalised, £1k for winning the league and £1k for cup competitions.

Man of the Match Brightlingsea Striker Jake Clowsley

We have been priced second favourites for promotion with odds of 3-2. With the boards expectation of a mid table finish hopefully we can surpass that and more.

So far so good for the pre season with some good results. The biggest worry is holding onto players but there is some promise within the squad. 16 Year Old Striker Ashley Birch has been in top form so far with 2 goals in 3 games as he looks to force himself into the first team. Another standout player has been Experienced Striker Daniel Cornwell with 4 goals in 5 games.

An up and down month for us, we had some good wins and frustrating losses. Currently we are 13th and our aim now will be a top 10 finish which I believe is doable. At the half way stage of the season we are on target for a good mid table finish which was what we had hoped for this season.
Several players have stood out for us but with most players on amateur contracts we can only hope we can hold on to them for the future. We also have some good youth players which will be given first team chances and hopefully they can capitalise on them just like Ashley Birch has.

Target for the second half of the season is to keep pushing and hopefully finish in the top 10 which would give us a good platform to build on for next season.

A tough first season but a strong finish enabled us to finish 11th. The hardest thing I’ve found is losing players suddenly without being able to stop them leaving. With this in mind we need to step up our push for promotion next season.

Haverhill’s match against Godmanchester will have been a meaningful one for Mike Barrow as he was able to celebrate victory over his former club.
Things did not get off to a good start for Godmanchester as young centre-back Charlie Johnson seized on an error by Josh Greenhalgh to score a tidy finish into the bottom left corner from 12 metres. Ben Evans then rather innocuously appeared to suffer sprained knee ligaments. Poacher Alberto Seidi doubled Rovers lead with a good finish into the top corner from close range. Young striker Jean-Claude Makiadi’s strike proved the only consolation for Godmanchester.
Haverhill have climbed above Fakenham Town and Newmarket Town to 2nd in the league.

Ben Evans suffered sprained knee ligaments and will be out for 6-8 weeks.

Board Confidence Update
To summarise, the board are very pleased with your overall leadership of the team.

Rands:
A very good month with win after win which has galvanised the squad in our push for promotion. Our strike partnership of Nathan Corkery and Alberto Seidi is flourishing and if we can keep them both fit and healthy we should be in a good position come the end of the season.

Board Confidence Update
To summarise, the board are very pleased with your overall leadership of the team.

Rands:
A tough month in terms of players leaving. Not only did we lose our best striker in Nathan Corkery but also one of our best defenders in Cameron Jones. Both are big losses to the club but hopefully Haverhill will see them again. The team bounced back well and we have surpassed our expectation in the FA Vase trophy. The league is still within our reach as we are only 7 points behind Stowmarket.

Board Confidence Update
To summarise, the board are satisfied with your management of the team.

Rands:
The month started well but then our unbeaten run came to an end and December turned into a very difficult month for us. Our strikers are struggling to fill the void left by Nathan Corkery and Alberto Seidi leaving. We currently have a few strikers on trial but we are hoping our current strikers can step up and do the job so our promotion bid doesn’t falter to much. If we can turn things around in January then we still have a chance.
