Exorcist is a classic , the original mind you... not the **** they called "the beginning" lol.
Other classics are Psycho (although probably more a thriller than al horror movie), Nightmare on Elm Street, Amityville, Braindead (a splatter movie), Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Wishmaster and Leprechaun. Most of these are from the 80s/90s and possibly not so much a shocker now as they were back then.
Can´t really think of any good recent ones apart from the Saw series, although half of them could´ve been left out.

I've heard the film [REC] is quite scary, not watched it myself though.

Having read a description though I will not be watching it... Horror films just mess up my sleep...

REC was awesome, Qaurentine the US remake just did not capture the atmosphere that REC had

I have to agree with all the REC comments. It's fantastic. I haven't seen 2 though, I heard 3 was on the way too.

The original Omen, The exocist,
South Korean film The Audition
Texas Chainsae Masacre (original)

Not a big fan of todays horror movies as they use too much special effects. My personnel opinion si the most scary effects is what you cant see (but know is happening) so it plays with your mind

Didn't read every single reply, so forgive double-posting:

The Collector (originally planned as a SAW-prequel it made it into it's own film and I really enjoyed it)
Cabin Fever (mock me if you must, I think it's a great film)
The Children (Could you kill your own child if it tries t murder you...?)
The Descent (First one awesome, sequel watchable but not great)
Frontier(s) (French movie.Might have misspelled)
Friday the 13th (Depending on how old you are, you might have missed the original which is to this day one of the best slashers ever)
Phone (Korean flick and pretty creepy at that - slated for a remake by Hollywood, go figure)
Wolf Creek (Aussie Horror, and very disturbing)
Rogue (Another Aussie film by the same director, and the first time I remember a crocodile being truly menacing)
Rampage (Hold your breath everyone, this is actually an Uwe Boll movie that is quite good - although more taking "Falling Down" to the max than a real horror film)
Identity (Slasher/Thriller/what-the-****-is-going-on type film and I freaking love it)
2LDK (Japanese flick, basically two roommates going at each other after they auditioned for the same part - have to see it to believe it)
High Tension (French movie again - and a great one at that)

There's tons more great movies out there, but I can't do all the work for you...

If you're looking for a truly, awesomely, hysterically bad "horror" movie, I can only recommend you get your hands on "Troll 2" - watch it with a few drinks and a few friends and be amazed at the badness.

BTW, Audition is Japanese, and of of Takeshi Miike's best films (the rest os awesome too, but this one takes the cake)

i don't like horror movies with makeup art like evil dead.. Paranormal Activities is awesome.

now, that's a horror movie XD

i saw some horror movies but i don't remember there names, nightmare on the elm street is the one that i remember, not so scary, but very good film, i'll watch mirrors soon

[rec]

Apparently, [REC]2 is supposed to be class. Not seen either but you know. Another film out this year is Piranha 3D which is about prehistoric Piranaha's that escape through a rift underwater and they go apeshit on a little town full of teens. I can honestly say it looks absolute Bollocks!! The CGI is shocking. Just warning :O

I watched The Evil Dead last night. Top notch film, perhaps dosen't build up enough or create characters, but still a very good film

I'm a sucker for vampire stuff ( b-boom) - I think ' Shadow of the Vampire ' is brill. Willem Defoes' ' Max Schreck ' is one of the best roles he's played. Add John Malkovich as ' F.W. Murnau ' - you can't go wrong with those guys in the same picture.

its more comedy to me, I found myself laughing at stupidness of it, awesome film though

Hellraiser
Pet Cemetery
The thing
The hitcher (not the remake, the 80s version)

The Thing?? You must be joking :) The Strangers is a really good film and provides the odd jump.

wizard of oz, the tin man scares the **** out of me

Dog soldiers, possibly one of the best recent British films. Odd bit of humour in there too
The Ruins is alright, not very good
The Evil Dead's good, kind of funny with the tree rape scene
Jennifers Body is good, but it has Megan Fox in unfortunately
SESSION 9 - One of my favourite films EVER, it's not well known and it's low budget, but my god it's amazing
