After a summer full of controversy, transfers and rumours, new manager Martin O'Neill will hope he can put it all behind him in a tricky opening to the season.

Matchday 1

Sunderland 1-3 Newcastle - Vagner Love(45+2, 50), Farfan(pen 60)

article-1149715-0391E917000005DC-163_468x279.jpg

A dream start as Newcastle defeated local rivals Sunderland at The Stadium Of Light. A very even opening half saw both sides come close to scoring, but it was to be a red card for Coloccini late in the 1st half that gave Newcastle incentive. Vagner Love latched onto a Jonas pass and slotted home on the stroke of half time. Sunderland were stunned again, as Vagner Love pounced on a Mensah mistake to double the lead.

Seven minutes later, Mike Williamson handled the ball in his own area, and Asamoah Gyan converted the resultant penalty. A quick reply from Newcastle looked imminent, and they sealed the points, Angeleri fouled the impressive Vagner Love, and the spot kick was converted coolly by debutant Jefferson Farfan.
MoM - Vagner Love - He looked in fine form, with two very good finishes, and a top performance.

Matchday 2

Newcastle 0-2 Tottenham -

Rafael-van-der-Vaart-Beno-007.jpg

After an impressive opening victory, Newcastle failed to defeat Spurs at home. Rafael van der Vaart gave the visitors the lead, with an incisive long range finish after 23 minutes. Newcastle kept trying, but neither Vagner Love or Hulk could find the net.

But Spurs looked the more threatening, with Capdevila surging forward from left-back to good effect. They were well marshalled in midfield from Tom Huddlestone, and were a constant threat on the counter-attack. Vagner Love, who had scored in the previous game, posed the biggest threat for the home side, when he managed to stay onside.
MoM - Mike Williamson - Kept Crouch and then Defoe at bay, couldn't do much about the goals.

Carling Cup 2nd Rd

Newcastle failed to get going, and a plethora of good chances went begging, including Caicedo missing an open goal from 12 yards early on.

A tactical switch at half-time seemed to spark the side into life, but it wasn't until the introduction of Hulk that Newcastle found a cutting edge. A through ball from Zeman found Hulk, who skipped beyond Cresswell before finishing. Ten minutes later, a rare header saw Hulk take Newcastle through, and saved their skins.
MoM - Martin Zeman - A good performance from the Czech, constantly attacking.

Jonas cut inside before sweeping beyond Gilks to make it 2-0. The break gave Blackpool a chance to regroup and look at changing, but more of the same from Newcastle was in store. A volley from Farfan rattled the post before rebounding off Gilks' back and into the net. Hulk made it six, striking from the edge of the area, before a tap in from Nolan on 80 minutes completed the rout.

Newcastle porgressed in the Carling Cup with a rout over Millwall. Hulk opened the scoring, firing past Mildenhall after 10 minutes.
