Before I began my most important task of evaluating the current players and staff, and whilst I waited for the delivery of my extra items from the UK, I decided to look up some facts and figures about the relatively unknown side I'd just taken over and to be honest there wasn't much I could find. The information I did find, was nothing to shout about. The club had never finished higher than 6th in the league and that was way back in the 2003/04 season, they also had never played in Europe and their trophy cabinet consisted of two minor trophys, the Ukrainian B and C league titles. Despite not having a great history, the one thing I have realised, is that Obolon Kyiv have a chairman, who if you get him on side, will back you 100% and that has shown not only in the funding he made available to build the new stadium, but also the faith he has put in me, to bring success to the club.

With the Euro's only a few days from getting underway, I took the opportunity to meet up with my assistant manager, so we could start re-shaping the playing squad and also the non-playing staff. Laszlo Rats, has only been at Obolon Kyiv for just over a year, but has built up enough knowledge in the Ukraine, having played for and coached at Dynamo Kyiv for a number of seasons, to be the ideal help I would need in what will be a very tough start to my managerial career. Last season, Laszlo was part of the Obolon side that finished 10th in the league and with the same bunch of players at our disposal, he was the man to get the insight of each player and staff member, so we could decide who would be staying and who would be leaving.

**********

First Laszlo and myself decided to look at the current batch of coaches we had to work alongside and we both agreed that what was on the books at the present time wouldn't be good enough to help introduce the new philosophy I wanted to bring into the club. So without hesitation I arranged a meeting with Vitaliy Kobzar, Vyacheslav Nivinskiy, Oleksandr Sukhoviy and Anatoliy Sergienko to release them immediately from their contracts, and along with a small pay off to each individual, all four men understood and expected my decision.
Next was the difficult job of searching for and then hiring the right replacements and this is where the contacts that Laszlo has built up over his career, would come in very useful to help me bring the right coaches into the club. One of the big changes I wanted to make is to bring to the club a fitness expert, as something I expect of my teams is that they compete for the entire ninety minutes. Laszlo, knew the exact person for the job and that was Serbian, Ivan Vucetic, who had been released by Metalurg Donetsk.
I have an abundance of promising young goalkeepers, who will act as back up to our veteran number one, Vitaliy Reva, so to help their development and then finally replace Reva at some point, I was informed of a goalkeeping coach who would be keen on joining my new revolution, so I approached his club, MFC Mykolaiv and after a compensatioin deal was agreed, Anatoliy Stavka joined the coaching ranks.
Next was a technical specialist who would help improve our ball mastery and I moved quickly to sign free agent, Victor Dogadaylo, who is very good friends with Laszlo Rats, which helped the deal go through beating a number of other clubs for his signature.
Finally completing my new look coaching team was physio, Oleksandr Kadatskiy and after agreeing a compensation fee with his club, Zorya Lugansk, he put pen to paper on a four yeal deal.

Mate, This story is Fantastic. Wanting to be in football coaching/management myself it renewed that desire to study more and do my research. I will certainly be following and keep up the good work.

Thanks mate, really pleased you are enjoying it. I'm a full time football coach for my actual job in real life. I work in a few schools, but mainly at semi pro club in Hampshire. Def recommend you doing it, if you have that passion for the game. Cheers. :)

Yeah, I certainly have the passion but as I'm still only quite young its just about taking the steps and I'm not sure about what's the best ones to take but yeah. Oh so the story is based on your life. Maybe you should go to the Euro's IRL and hope your story comes true. It has been a great read so far... When's the next post.

Thank you so much mate. I like making my stories as realistic as possible. And like to include some real life bits too. Next update will be very soon. :D

After finalising my backroom team, the days that followed were spent in the company of my assistant Laszlo Rats, as he went through in detail the attributes of each player under contract at the club, to help me get a much clearer picture of who could fit into my plans for the new season.
Although Laszlo was very detailed in his assessment of each player, I couldn't make any final decisions until I had seen them play in competitive matches, so I arranged a game against our under 21s. This match would allow me to see the current first team take on the batch of promising youngsters we have in our second string, and allow me to see who would have a future at the club and who could be sold to create some more funds to put towards strengthening the team if needed.

FRIENDLY
OBOLON 4 - 0 OBOLON U'21s

We ran out easy winners against our younger squad, but despite them being on the end of a hammering, their are three or four players who have the potential to play a part this season if they are called upon. With the first team, nearly all the players impressed, though two or three were very disappointing. The goals were scored by Sergiy Sibiryakov, Olexandr Bondarenko, Igor Tymchenko and Yuriy Yakovenko.

**********

After the game myself and my coaching team, sat down and discussed what are views were of the game that was just played and after a couple of hours we were all in agreement about the players who would be put up for sale, but more importantly the players who would start the season in the first team squad.

TRANSFERS OUT

Valeriy Zavarov - 12k to Zorya

Sergiy Barilko - Loan to Volyn

Olexsandr Mandzyuk - Loan to Illichivets

**********

With three players leaving the club, one on a permanent deal and the other two on season long loans with a view to making them permanent, I felt very confident that the streamlined squad would be ready to impress me during the friendlies and be ready for the start of the season.
As we don't have any internationals who are taking part in the Euro's, I arranged five friendlies to be played over the coming weeks, in preparation for our opening fixture against Vorskla.
With the country gripped in the Euro's, the players were very keen to impress and show why they deserved a place in my starting eleven and agreed to start training almost immediately and play some part in the games I'd arranged against a variety of different opposition.

brilliant- good luck with the season. what are the boards expectations/media prediction out of interest?

Cheers buddy, just a short update, as I'm trying to link some of the actual Euro's into my story. Board ex[ectations are for me to avoid relegation. (H)
