ok so my brother has just joined and he is going to do basic training in 5 or 6 months i think and i think i should go for it so i'm doing a poll of what job im going to do and i'll put a description in about it here goes OK

infantry solider=You’re in the thick of the action as part if the Army’s elite fighting force. You combine bravery and skill to face the enemy head on.

engineer IT specialist=You’ll operate and maintain the high-tech signalling kit that keeps Engineers in touch with each other, and with their commanders.

engineer logistics specialist= You deliver the right kit, to the right place at the right time. Everything that the engineers need gets delivered, thanks to you.

geographic technician= Using cutting-edge technology, you compile, compare and manage geographic data, and conduct analysis of battlefield terrains.

ammunition technician= As an expert in explosives you handle, test and dispose of everything from bullets to bombs, ensuring the safety of fellow soldiers.

combat medical technician= Highly skilled, members of the Army, giving front-line emergency first aid and casualty evacuation in the most testing conditions

Don't be doing what people think you should do, only what you want to do.

which do you think you are best suited for? We really can't answer this since we don't know what kind of person you are

**** joining the British Army, it's a pile of wank.

They take any ****** who can hold a rifle, that combined with the fact you cannot trust anyone, even those on your own team and that you are fighting a war for reasons nobody really understands kinda put me off.

Maybe I just took Green Zone too seriously? ;)

But for you I wouldn't leave it up to complete strangers who don't even know you to pick your job, choose what you find most interesting, and if you think they all look lame then maybe the army isn't for you!

cannot stress how important what irish just said is. if you are unsure, you shuold be talking to an army careers adviser, not us for advice

Do something that you can use out of the army as well

How about giving the Territorial Army a shot? Obviously its not the same, but it'll give you a taste for what being in the army is about and if you like that, then go for it.

But yeah, its already been said - talk to people who know you and know more about the characteristics that each job entails. Members of a Football Manager-based forum aren't the experts to turn to if you need tips on joining the army.

i think you watch to many american movies.

The RAF regiment reserves would be a good place to start out, they are more elite than your average infantry, and if you join as a reserve you will only do 1 night a week and 1 weekend a month, and it will make it a lot easier if you decided to join the military full time.

As a pacifist, I would strongly recommend you not joining. You are obviously still young and have a whole life in front of you, which you will end up throwing away to be a 'hero'. Your life out there will completely change, and if you do come back you'll never be the same. You can be a hero in so many other ways, ways, which doesn't involve unnecessary violence and killing

Well I am in Canada, but from personal experience the career advisor is just going to push you towards whatever positions the need to fill, "You like camping and smores? Well off to the infantry for you". While I can promise you lots of time outside in the worst parts of the world, there will be no smores. I've met a lot of great people in the infantry, but it's a young mans game, it's super hard on the body, and it has few transferable skills to civi life. Future employers don't care that you can strip a mg and fire a mortar. You will be uniquely qualified to dig holes however. Pick a tech trade, get some skills you can use outside the military. That way you aren't stuck in the army for lack of options if you want out later. If you really must go inf cause you want to prove that you are hard as f*** or something like that, do it for one contract max then either transfer to another trade or get out entirely. Your body will thank you later.

Well all the bottom 4 would need years of training, I would think. And infantry soldier wouldn't be the best of pay, so none of them IMO. I'd rather work in Tesco's or somewhere like that, than go in the army as an infantry soldier getting about the same pay, but considerably greater chance of dying.

As someone who is in the forces ( RAF ) i can give you advice...if you join the army you will spend 6 months every year away...Ammo tech through the RLC is the best paid by far..you will be a sargeant in 4 years...corporal in less than 2 and a Warrant officer in 8 years but then again your doing EOD...Im a weapons tech so I do the same job but in the RAf plus a lot more like fast jets but not as well paid as the army guys due to lack of promotion.

This is ironic as i rang up to enquire about joining Navy today, when asked what job i'd be intrested in my answer was too vague so they said they'd send me a infomation pack on jobs available and have set up an interview date for exactly a week after the pack is suppost to arrive.

As said above, choosing the right job for yourself is key, every person is differant but maybe talking to an adviser at your local recruiting office would be your best option.

Just don't join the army unless you're going to be part of the artillery.

Don't forget there's the Navy & the RAF as well which offer similar jobs which are worth taking a look at.

Don't ask us for the advice. Ask a careers officer, they know plenty more. They will obviously try to convince you to join but that's their job I suppose. They know what they are talking about though.

On the subject of the army, one of my best mates joined when he was 16. He's now 19 and has been to Germany a few times and now he's in Canada. Not too shabby for three years service. He was a ****** idiot at school and he's been sorted right out by the army, put him on the right track if you will. He's a credit to himself and his family.
My cousin has also joined and he's said its the best thing he's ever done. Gone in as a squaddie in the Royal Engineers.

From what I have heard the Army is very good for life experience, and you won't have a problem getting a job when you retire. The only bad thing is the length of service you sign up for second time round. After your 4 years initial, you are in for a while.
