Ferguson Rebuilds Squad With British Talent
August 2009

Since the departure of 18 players from Everton, manager Duncan Ferguson has £57 million to spend before Everton's first Premier League match against West Ham on the 15th August, So far Ferguson has not disappointed Toffees fans by bringing in 9 players. With the highest fees being at £17.5 million for young Arsenal playmaker Jack Wilshere and also £15 million for England's no. 1 Joe Hart. Duncan Ferguson had admitted that they were expensive aquasitions but he believes that they are the right men to take the club forward in this new era. Player list below.

Total-£57 million

Everton's new record signing Wilshere at just 17 could serve the toffees for many years to come.

England's no. 1 Joe Hart is another one for the future at just 22, you can't see Everton concending too many goals this season.

The time has come after a long hard summer at Goodison park, it's time to put all, when the new Premier league season kicked off on the 15th August. The toffees have 5 fixtures this month with 4 of them being in the Premier league. They kick off their season in the Premier League with a home match against the Hammers (West Ham), the next game provides a potentially tricky away tie at Birmingham. Next up is a return to Goodison for the team as they entertain a Wigan side and finally which is sure to be the hardest match this month as Everton travel to Villa Park. The only other fixture this month is an away tie at Scunthorpe in the Carling Cup 2nd round.

Everton 3-1 West Ham - Wilshere, Cole,Wickham. McCarthy
Birmingham 1-2 Everton - Jerome, Cole, Wilshere (Pen)
Everton 1-0 Wigan -Jagielka
Scunthorpe 1-5 Everton - Horwood, Wilshere,Beckford,Baines (2), Osman
Aston Villa 3-2 Everton - A.Young,Heskey,Agbonlahor,Beckford,Rodwell

What a great start to the season with 4 wins out of 5 games, not too much more you could ask for. With all the new signings this summer at Goodison, 2 players really shown for me this month. They were Everton's record signing Jack Wilshere with 3 goals in 5 games and striker Carlton Cole who has hit 2 goals and always been 1 of the first names on the team sheet. The only downside to the month was a 3-2 defeat to Villa where Villa quickly went 2-0 up but goals from Jermaine Beckford and Jack Rodwell got it back to 2-2 but in added time Gabriel Agbonlahor came up with the winner.

Ferguson Slams Capello As Wilshere Doesn't Make England's Senior Squad

At a press conferance regarding Duncan Ferguson's plans for the future of Everton, one journalist posed the question about the current England squad after their dissapointing performance in the friendly winat home to Slovenia 2-1. followed by a lowly draw to Croatia which ended 2-2 in the Euro Qualifier match. He was outraged that Jack Wilshere had not even been considered following his good form with 3 goals in 5 games, then going onto say that to play Michael Carrick on the right side of midfield was an absolute JOKE. Ferguson ended the press conference by saying "if that is how Capello decides to play then England fans should be prepared to miss out on another major tourament as Jack has shown to me at his short time at the club and is exactly what England need". Jack Wilshere turned out 2 great performance for the under-21's as he netted in both of those matches as he contuined his great start to the season, with 2 in the game against the Faroe Islands in the 4-0 rant. Wilshere's other goal came in a 3-0 rout against a poor Hungarian side.

Wilshere has impressed many with his great start to the season

Many support Ferguson's decision that Wilshere should have been included in his squad

With a fairly impressive August, there was plenty still to prove this month as new boss Duncan Ferguson looks to establish himself and his toffees with his all Britshi/Irish squad. With 5 fixtures to look forward to covering 2 different competitions the Premier League and the Carling Cup. The two interesting ties for the fans to look forward to along with thier most challenging fixtures are a trip up to St. James's Park where they play Newcastle in the Carling Cup 3d round, this is sure to provide a hostile reception for Ferguson's men. The other challenging fixtures this month is a tricky away game at White Hart Lane to face Spurs. This will definitely provide a stern test for the toffees this month.
Everton 2 -0 Fulham- Cole,Beckford (Wilshere sent off)
Stoke 0-4 Everton - Beckford (2), Pugh O.G, Rodwell
Newcastle 3-2 Everton -Taylor,Ranger,Ameobi ,Vaughan,Clyne
Tottenham 2-0 Everton - Bale,Keane
A bit of a mixed month for toffees fans, with 8 goals scored 4 games, the month started brightly for Everton with dominant wins against Fulham and Stoke but a little hicup towards the end of the month with 2 defeats on the bounce against Newcastle and Spurs. So Everton were knocked out of the Carling Cup 3rd round against Newcastle, Duncan Ferguson fielded a weakended side and Newcastle sure made him pay going 3-0 up on 80 mins but a late surge from the toffees got it back to 3-2 but they couldn't find 1 more goal. The other defeat against champions league side Tottenham, Spurs dominated throughout and Everton just didn't turn up today.
