It has emerged, that Michel Platini is to push for the 5 major European leagues in Germany, Italy, France, Spain and England to change the system to "summer football", in which a season would run from mid-March , to the end of October. However, the head of Bundesliga, has already said that he would not accept such an idea, and the FA is ready to oppose such a plan. However, it has been said that the plans "were not concrete" as yet, but the idea has the backing of Sepp Blatter.

Personally I'm speechless. But I can see a major battle betweem the 5 major leagues, UEFA and FIFA, and unfortunately, I can see them backing down because of sweetners being offered by the governing bodies.

Think we can gauge one thing. They're so determined to create a "footballing legacy" they're not looking at the bigger picture, and Platini by the sounds of it just wants another tick on his CV. Truly hope this backfires and the major leagues make a fist of it and do all they can to disrupt plans of them both. The fans simply wouldn't stand for it

I don't see how this will work. The players will spend half their time traveling - like they don't already...

So everyone else should bend over just for Qatar and their world cup plans? **** off Platini and **** off Blatter. I've had enough of those morons now. How can Spain and Italy be expected to play at the height of summer? Ridiculous

I mean (correct me if i'm wrong), it would put the leagues in line with other leagues in other countries, but why try and change something that's worked for so long. Why not get rid of the 25 player registration rule, so clubs can get more players in, therefore keeping players who are involved in internationals fresh and reducing the workload and reducing burnout? There's just so much they want to change without thinking about the consequences

Why not pick a country capable of hosting a world cup when it should be played in the first place? Why change the age long traditions of our sport? Why not try to improve the game with technological advances rather than improve the globalisation and commercialism?

They seem blinkered by money and the creation of a 'legacy', when they should be following other sport profiles such as cricket, rugby and tennis to improve the game.

The only legacy they can create is by killing the true meaning of football

I can understand playing summer football in England and Germany - But Spain, Italy and France?! Does he know how hot it'll be playing in 37 degrees and insane humidity in Spain?

Can only imagine. isn't it hotter inside the stadium too though? I remember the Cup Final between Everton and Chelsea, and it was really warm, but the pitchside temperature was 41 degress centigrade. Players were suffering badly, so god knows what it would be like in somewhere like Spain

As much as I hate Blatter/Platini, it is possible to play in summer. Many of our games here in Aus are in the summer, they are usually in the late afternoon/night though when it is cooler. I don't see why this could not be done in this case as well. Regardless, I'm still not a fan of the idea.

But doing this to work around being able to play the World Cup in Qatar is rediculous! But on the other hand, a few football games on the T.V over the summer period would be brilliant, sitting out in the beer gardens in the sun, watching the football! Great. But yeah, I'm against it lol.

This is absolute ****. I hate them two. Playing games in the summer? FFS, Spain and Italy would have to hold games at 11pm at night! and it's still ****** hot over there. Germany have very hot summers and on the odd occasion so do we!

The reason the Russians play in the summer is because of the extreme winter weather. Remember a few years ago the top European teams wanted to create their own league? We could end up with top teams in Europe doing just that! or all the leagues pulling away and creating their own thing. I know it's far fetched but some one needs to **** them two muppets off!

Actually, the Russian Premier League will be changed to the winter schedule in the 2012/13 season. Imagine playing somewhere like Novosibirsk in -25 degrees.

I see the logic there, but I would guess that the speed of the game is quite different over there? The appeal of English football is the end-to-end, non stop action. This would surely be limited by playing in summer?
