Mike's 4-2-4 Inside Attacking Tactic

Cracking tactic, I can vouch for that, used a one with identical setup that I created myself, currently 3rd in Prem with Newcastle 1st season(H). I usually sub one of the strikers if the game is close 70mins+, bring in a DM/DC.

*Could also do with some logos Mikey Boy. I recommend FMC'11, or the SilkySideways megapack, both in the downloads section*

I often leave the tactic as it is, just bring the mentality down to control and shout 'Take a Breather', normally fine.

Oh and for the logos, after FM10 I decided to avoid adding any graphics into the game as I'm low on memory and the game's slow as **** as it is ^^)

Yeah, slightly different with Newcastle. Just play safe personally, take an attacker out, put a defender on. Set to counter, and pray.

As for graphics, if you put them into an FMF file, they will not slow the game down

This tactic(but made by myself), has brough tme some cracking results -
v Chelsea(H) 0-0
v Arsenal(H) 3-1 W
v Sunderland(A) 4-0 W
v Liverpool(H) 3-1 W

The use of the wingers, it seems, has blown FM apart. I think the standard 4-3-3 was very, very successful in last season's version, I've had countless goals from Dzeko and Chamakh and Carroll from crosses to their heads! Keep it up buddy

At away games I change the mentality to control, when I tke the lead and shout "Retain posession" and "Take a breather", also I changed the strikers to poacher and adv. forward

i also used this kind of tactic since fm 10. its always works. but to be honest, its works better in fm 11 and surely its makes me kind of boring playing this, even only for 3 days only.
whats different between urs and mine is the way we put role and duty for most of them. whats i want to add is : u mention that passing is up to. this one is a hard case. i think in fm passing is almost the key for us to make our tactic works well. for exam, if my scout told me that direct passsing is best, then surely we must go direct passing on our tactic. using this 4-2-4 tactic, i have 3 kind of different tweak, its for direct, predominant in middle and congesty. using this in fm 11, i finish my MU at 1st, with 29 win, 9 draw and 2 lost. 116 goals with 27 conceded. i only lost in 6th in fa cup. win champ cup, leage cup. roney become beast 26 app with 30 goals 11assit and 5 man of the match. i only bought eden hazzar for my playmaker and dennish appiah for subs rafael in right full back.

i hope we can discus and share more in future, since i am really crazy about using 4-2-4 tactic

Played 13 games for Arsenal in the league and won 12 so good start to the season, scoring lots of goals and Van Persie has been immense scoring 15 goals this season either as AMR or striker.

Does anyone change when playing big away games?, I got spanked away to Chelsea 3-0 but could be more to my defence having a shocker!

Great tactic, possession on average 55% and creating 3-4 clear cut chances a game so you can't ask for more than that!

Thanks for the essay XD I tried Direct Passing for around 10 games then Shorter for the same number of matches and I got pretty much similar results.

Van Persie took some time to get used to AMR for me, don't know why. This season I bought Mata, he's playing well at AMR and van Persie's banging in the goals at Poacher

For the away games, I kept it the same really, but against Barcelona in the Champs. League I set it to defend. I did go 2-0 down but pulled it back to 2-2 with minutes to go, only to lose to a Seydou Keita injury-time winner (*******!). You could try what Karlsruher38 said or go defensive, or leave it with Attack and hope for the best.

I play a very similar tactic but with the following changes Left Winger is set as advanced playmaker support but with more run from deep that way he links the play between the midfield and the strikers. And i play with either a deep liying forwad support (strnght) or a trequartista (agility) on the rigth striker slot mostly because of my current staff. Left i play a poacher set to cut inside so when the deep liyng forward moves into channels both the inside forward and the poacher get into the box.
Ofensivly is going very well as i have scored 30 goals in 14 matches in the premier and i scored almost 20 in six games in the eurocup goup phase but my def sucks althoug i think is because of the personal (mistakes) since im managing preston and i dont quite have thebst players (good but young) Rodwell Beevers, Muniesa LB and a regen as RB. My strikers are Smolarek (Trequ or Poacher) Parkin (deep liying) and a Regen Skrba (Poacher) who is my main scorer with a 17 finishing but only 9 composure so he misses a lot too.

I have only lost 2 games 3-0 against chelsea (but playing much much better than chelsea) and 4-1 to Man city in the league cup playing with a mede up team after a 6 games in two weeks stretch and a loadfull of injuries.

Took over at City a couple of seasons in and after getting from 12th to 2nd with half a season with my own tactics from FM10 I decided to create some new tactics for this years game but failed a bit and this tactic has probably saved me from the for this season. Most of the guys are playing well, playing Ganso at CMR and changed him to Adv. playmaker/support, David Silva is ripping teams apart on the right wing (3 assists and two goals in a rout against Peterborough in the last match) and regen fat Ronaldo is bangin in goals upfront. Only player who I think could be playing better is Gareth Bale on the left wing. Any ideas? I was thinking of changing his wide play instructions and trying defensive winger. Will add few screenshots when the season ends.

Cool, thanks for all that, will take note. With Bale, he wouldn't work so well as he's a dominant left footer (although regularly cuts inside). Change his wide play to Hugs Touchline and he should play pretty well.

I've now started working on the official second version of the tactic. I have changed it according to feedback and these are the changes I'm implementing:

• Dropping the defensive line a bit
• Dropped the tempo a bit
• Changed Target Man's duty to Attack
• Changed Poacher's role to Trequartista (you can change back to Poacher or any other role that suits your team)
• Set Tackling to More Cautious

I will test a few more bits out and give you the good/bad news depending on results.

I juts beat sunderland in the FA cup, i only iscored 2 goals but i got 8 clear cut chances some of them so easy i was frentic (like watching a real game) when missing them. As i told mike if you set one of the wingers as advance playmaker it works very nice, preferently the one opposite to the box to box midfield or (in my case i use a ball winning and a advadced play maker as cm but i use a player that has the "Come deep to get ball" and play him in front o a ball playing defender, that way the transition is easier. As i manage a lower side (preston) and not all my players are as good i set the roaming and creativity to limited so only my two playmakers and my trequartista have to make "creative" decisions. So as Playmaker on the righ wing im using verrati or pirés(as sub) i use Adríen or Tinga as CM playmaker And i use Smolarek (i must insist, the best player i have ever had in the game) as trequartista so far he has banged 10 goals and 10 assists in 16 league games

Also if you want your trequartista to score a bunch of goals play him along a Deep liying forward suport with the trequartista playing on the "bad side" that is a left footed on the right and a right footed on the left. it works much better if your deep liying forward has the "Play with back to goal" prefered move. That way i have been able to get good performances from a very low rated Parkin. I thing this system Mike (and me)is emulating is like that pellegrini used in Villareal

Ok, the season has ended. The points gap was as close as 2 pts with a few games to go but a draw and a loss virtually ended my title chances and I had to settle for 2nd spot. We had superior goal difference though

I must say great tactic. Problems to my team adjusting it and poor form early on cost us the title.Happy with the cup win though.

Finished the first season with this tactic. Ended up fourth because of the poor results before starting to use this tactic. Definitely a very good attacking tactic, scored 102 league goals, 7 players scored double figures but also leaked in 45 league goals. This is probably because if the attacking nature of the formation. If the opposition had a good midfield then it was quite difficult if not impossible to break them down. The losses to Arsenal and United were because they managed to dominate possession and the two center mids were simply passed around. Will play another season with City before starting a proper game and will replace one of the forwards for a midfielder as I did in the Champions league final and managed to win the game(my first trophy on FM11). against absolute top teams. Changing the targetman from support to attack is a good idea. I did it after about five games and then they started scoring goals themselves not just winning headers on the attack.

I had the same possesion problem against the big sides. i "solved" by narrowing the formation and setting control. Youll have more possesion but be ready for really boring matches. I finished a frentic january yesterday. Destroyed ipswich, Burnley and Middlesbourgh (6-2 /6-0/ 3-0) beat westham at home 2-0 and lost to them in london 1-0 (with 4 penalty shouts from my players!!) beat Tottenham 2-1 and lost against Man U. Im fist in the league one point over CHelsea but with one played game more. Against tottenham wstham and man u i used a very narrow formation and set to control the game. The most important thing was they commited a ton of fouls palacios got ejected, as well as two westham players (one each game) Then in superiority i changed to a wide width and direct passing. Ill post some images soon.
