I've been playing it for a long time, since before it was on steam.
Got back into a few months ago, but have stopped playing since.
It's fun at times, but also time consuming and often repetitive. The last thing I remember doing is courting about 5 women and traveling for 5-10 minutes just to get to other side of map (increasing game speed would be lovely). It also takes hours and hours to complete building projects.
The real saving grace from all the grind is the battles. I highly recommend picking up the battle size tool. You can have 1,000+ people on the map at once if your PC can handle it. It makes for some crazy siege battles!!! Just a hint, DON'T GO UP THE RAMP FIRST. 1 vs 1,000 (plus ranged weapons fired at you)...you won't last long.
Btw, the Nords are where it's at. Nordic warriors + Rhodok Spearman + Rhodok Crossbows = unstoppable. Nords are great hand to hand, the spearman kill the horsemen who have advantage over the nord warriors, and the Crossbowmen have great range, good melee skills, and heavy armor. The crossbowmen are ideal for defense. Put the spearmen in front of the Nords, and the Crossbows behind the nords. The Crossbows soften up the cavalry who then charge into the spearmen, then you order your nords to charge who wipe out the rest. This combination is nearly unbeatable in defense of castles.
