I just started playing Mount and Blade: Warband. It's silly good - if you like Morrowind, but found Oblivion lacking, this game is for you. It's ******* awesome. It's got the best combat system for an RPG I've ever played. The quests (if you bother with them) can be a bit repetitive (though I've not found them bad, I've found them refreshing!), but it's a proper sandbox game. The graphics aren't amazing, but who the **** cares. I can't recommend this game enough.

Is there a demo for this (on pc)? Was tempted before to get this, but the reviews were less than favourable.

Try it, I'm sure you will love it. It's a very good game. And it's an indie game.
Yes, here is the Warband demo: TaleWorlds

I've read some of the reviews, and tbh, the only thing they were complaining about was graphics and repetitive quests.

Ah well. One of those people that prioritises gameplay over graphics myself. That case shall give it a blast. Seems my sort of game to play

I've been playing it for a long time, since before it was on steam.

Got back into a few months ago, but have stopped playing since.

It's fun at times, but also time consuming and often repetitive. The last thing I remember doing is courting about 5 women and traveling for 5-10 minutes just to get to other side of map (increasing game speed would be lovely). It also takes hours and hours to complete building projects.

The real saving grace from all the grind is the battles. I highly recommend picking up the battle size tool. You can have 1,000+ people on the map at once if your PC can handle it. It makes for some crazy siege battles!!! Just a hint, DON'T GO UP THE RAMP FIRST. 1 vs 1,000 (plus ranged weapons fired at you)...you won't last long.

Btw, the Nords are where it's at. Nordic warriors + Rhodok Spearman + Rhodok Crossbows = unstoppable. Nords are great hand to hand, the spearman kill the horsemen who have advantage over the nord warriors, and the Crossbowmen have great range, good melee skills, and heavy armor. The crossbowmen are ideal for defense. Put the spearmen in front of the Nords, and the Crossbows behind the nords. The Crossbows soften up the cavalry who then charge into the spearmen, then you order your nords to charge who wipe out the rest. This combination is nearly unbeatable in defense of castles.

Hah, I tried "going over the top" on the ladders - HACK HACK HACK HACK HACK. What I love is how frantic the mêlée is; you eventually just click frantically during the sieges, but the more open battles with the ride by attacks are basically calm executions. I'm currently Olav Tordenbukk (Olav Thundergoat), in service of King Ragnar of the Nords, Head Honcho of Viadar (Or something), Looter of Swadia, The Terror of Ashdown Forest, Donkey Rapist of the North and general nuisance.

As for troops I'm going basically Nords + some Vaegir cavalry. Where do you get the battle mods for more folk?

This is the one I use I believe...it's from 2006 but still works

M&B Repository - File: Battle Size Changer

I'm not a fan of anything Vaegir. Their axes are kinda cool. But they are the "balanced" nation regarding troop selection. Their archers are supposedly fantastic, but Rhodok crossbows are more powerful (take longer to reload) and they have better melee and armor.

I always tell myself that I'll start fighting on foot (as I think cavalry is unfairly easy) but half the time I forget. However it is fun to stand in line with your troops and await the enemy charge! Takes more skill to direct your troops + fight on foot.

Avoid recruiting cavalry archers, they aren't programmed right. They will shoot from range but still act as melee cavalry. They will charge the opponents often (firing arrows as they close in) and then fight melee. Don't expect them to behave like horse archers in Total War games.

Btw the Selucids are an interesting faction. I was building my relation with them (trying to marry this one hotty) in case I ever wanted out of the Nords. They have strong armored infantry and superb horses however I don't think they have archers. Plus their territory is wide open and easy to defend and you are in position to invade any of 3 separate factions. Add in that their cities produce rare and expensive goods and you've got a potential super power. Trade your rare goods to raise finances for a large army for the reenactment of Turkish/muslim invasion of Southeast Europe.

I currently have a mix of Swadian and Vaegir cavalry, supported by assorted archers and Nord infantry. I keep holding my wee castle in the middle of Vaegir country against them, as I've got (or, had) 35 Nord Huscarls that butchered everything.

There's nothing easy about fighting on a horse vs. the Rhodoks! They're nuts! ******* pikes!

I think they may be slightly better in my version - they do a mix of close combat and archery.

What, you mean the Sarranids? I sprung two Rhodok counts out of their prison, with the Sultan in attendance next to the prison! Btw, does it make any difference who you marry with regards to their personality?

I'm not sure about personality. I imagine it does make a difference. I haven't gotten married yet so I'm not sure if your wife become a character or not (different personalities = different skills?)

I always really enjoy prison breaks. Whenever I try to steal the keys but don't kill the guard immediately, I always have to try and climb on random things to get away then throw daggers at their skulls until I can grab the keys and make a run for it! I usually don't let the prisoner fight either.

**** you, I've got the itch to start playing this game again!

Hmmm, sounds interesting. I've been finishing some games that I started and have been looking for something else to play. Will check this one out.

Hahha, it is a gem of a game though! Managed to hold off 800 Rhodoks with my 130 soldiers btw. WIN.

I meant to ask if the battle sizer worked for you; I suppose it did.

Makes sieges quite interesting...hundreds of arrows and javelins flying.

I own, but never bother playing it. I bought it cause it was a weekend deal on Steam once. Might start playing it.

OT: Are you on the Paradox forum?

Awesome game. Was bored once and got my hands on a... well, 'not legit' copy of the game from one of my mates, used to spend hours playing it.

I still play some of Paradox's strategy titles, though.

On horse archers - if you have a big stack of them you set them to follow you and run rings around the enemy, they'll tear them to shreds. You can use them to charge at the enemy if you feel you can minimize losses.

On marriage - by the time I get married I usually get bored and quit, but my mate always told me you should get a wife with plenty of relatives, as your relatives are more likely to support your claims to cities and castles.

Good idea on the horse archers...why I haven't thought of that? May start a new save just to do that!
