Muamba

Edit: Changed my opinion. Didn't remember what he said and thought it was less offensive.

I don't agree with this to be honest. He is a ***** and deserves it, but for tweeting? Kind of abit extreme when you have rappers saying worse things on a music track/video and nothing happens about it.
Twitter should of just deleted the comments, banned his account and his IP.

Just my opinion. Don't bite my head off.

Completely different to a music track, that isnt a malicious communication, this is. If he did this on the street, he'd get arrested.

but for tweeting?

The thing is, why should the internet be held to any different standard than real life? I really hate that double standard because it undermines the legitimate use that the internet has as a platform for expression and connection by saying that what you say on it doesn't matter. Evidently it does: people have planned atrocious attacks on the internet, people have killed themselves over cyber bullying, people have behaved in a manner that would see them become a total pariah if they did anything like that in real life etc etc yet it's ok because it's "just the internet." Why? If I send my black neighbours a letter calling them *******, is that any different from real life? No of course not, either way I'm a total ***.

I welcome this judgement because maybe, just maybe, it might make people think twice before their open their mouths to say something foul.

Same thing as a music track for me. Some songs are aimed at certain people because of a "beef". How is that any different to someone on the street calling someone a bad word?

You make a good point and I agree that things on the internet should be punishable. I didn't make myself that clear. But in my opinion, Liam Stacey only tweeted offensively about Muamba once. Which I admit I didn't recall what he said and thought it was less offensive, so I've changed my mind and agree to the punishment.

He tweeted about Muamba, then when he got confronted on twitter by other users, he then proceeded to fire off a series of racist, homophobic and sexist insults and abuse.

All of which are governed by various criminal laws.

As for "beef" there is a question of how much they are breaking certain laws. I'd hazard a guess to say they arent, thats why record companies have legal departments.

It is different. There is a clear law on malicious communication, which doesnt necessarily have to take the form of abuse. If it had been on a letter, or been plastered about on posters there would still be an arrest. The law has merely caught up with the change in technology.

I read today that the guy received expulsion from Uni.

So stupid.

I just don't get it. The guy was studying for a degree in biology, he is clearly intelligent- and yet his comments were not those of someone clever enough to be studying biology. Don't get me wrong, in no way am I defending the guy, but I just found it really weird.

The other high profile case with Stan Collymore was by a law student too.

But Biology..

Well physics cat can have fun only proving things by induction and spending years going round in circles without reaching conclusions ;)

Still you would think someone who can get into a decent degree would have at least some common sense.
