As I woke up on that fateful morning of 13th June 2011, I realised that this was the biggest day of my career. This is the day I took over at Athletic Club, known to most as Athletico Bilbao, and to their loyal fans as Los Leones.
Now, you may be wondering why me, an Englishman who has only just recently left University at the age of 25 would be getting an interview to be the manager of such a big European team.
Well, it all started when me and a few mates from my Uni went on holiday to, you guessed it, Spain. We had just being on a wild night out in Bilbao on the 6th June, when we bumped in to a smart looking man, in an expensive suit.
He looked at us, realised we were English, and in his broken English, asked us: "Do we like Football?"
Me and my mates all looked at each other, and all said: "Yes".
He then continued: "Do you like Bilbao?"
I replied with: "You mean Athletico Bilbao? Los Leones?"
"Yes!" he shouted in delight.
"Yes, we do!" I said.
"Well, if you didn't know, I am the Chairman, and I am looking for a new manager, since the last one resigned."
"Kieran would be a great manager!" shouted one of my friends, before falling over drunk. (I am called Kieran btw)
"You do seem to know a lot about Bilbao for an Englishman..." he looked to be pondering something.
Realising what he was thinking, I said: "Well, I am a huge fan of Football all around the World, and my dad was an Athletico Bilbao fan too, and he has taught me Spanish and a bit about them."
"You must be joking!" He replied.
"No, i'm not, honestly!"
"Well, I guess, I have no idea why I am doing this, but would you like an interview to be the manager?" He said.
I was shocked beyond belief, and couldn't speak. I managed to spit out a "Yes".
"Well, next week, Monday 13th June, you had better get your **** down to San Mames then, you've got an interview. Have fun on the rest of your night, and make sure to turn up sober and in a nice suit." He added helpfully.
"Yes, I will" I managed to reply.
He then walked off, and all of my friends and me were absolutely exstatic. We continued partying the night away.
The next morning, I had to check if it was true, and in my inbox on my email account, there lay an email inviting me for a job interview at Athletico Bilbao.
I quickly called my Mum, and told her I wasn't going to be back for a bit longer than planned, and I made sure to extend my stay at the hotel for long enough.
