Finally Roberto proved is worth his price and also stopped a penalty, very well done ;) This year will go down between Porto and Benfica, Hopefuly Porto will win it, but I have a feeling that Benfica are going to get way better .. Queiroz, go back to Fergie, or coach the under16. FFS !

How exactly is saving a poorly taken penalty proving that you're worth €8.5m? Come on, he even made a mess of a not so good header in the Supercup (which ended up costing us the match), you can't excuse that, especially since that wasn't a one-off - he messed up enough times (Sion match anyone?)

Nuno, everybody offended Roberto untill he defended that penalty. Personally, I have always supported him, it didn't went well at first because of the pressure coming from:
-being a 'let's loan him' player in Spain
-coming to the Champion in Title(s)
-the price he was paid for

He isn't defending at all, and he doesn't deserve, for now, a first-team spot. Let him settle and he will justify his pricetag :)

Again, cheers fellas, kick-*** thread:wub:

I honestly hope you are right. Maybe Quique Flores was right, had he come on a free he wouldn't have as much pressure on him as he does now.

The Europa League draw was pretty Good for Sporting being drawn against Lille (FRA), Gent (BEL), and Levski (BUL). Are toughest matches without a doubt are going to be the home and away legs vs Lille.

Hmm wouldn't fancy a trip to Sofia either, away matches at such distant countries are always hard, and unfortunately for Portugal, Sporting is capable of the best and of the worst...

AFTERMATCH TOMORROW

AfterMatch
In a EURO 2012 qualifiers week, and with a break in the league, all the clubs took advantage of that and scheduled friendlies against minor teams, even with some games having less than 90'. In this AfterMatch, before I talk about the awesome results of a national team which was in the 3rd place at the world rankings during the World Cup, I will talk a bit about the national championship.

In a friendly against Estoril, Benfica lost 3-2. The game had 80', with a break at the 45'. Benfica started winning 2-0, with Gaitan and Cardozo scoring, but then, in the 2nd "half", conceded 3 goals.

In other friendlies, Sporting lost 2-1 against Belenenses, and the new goalie Hildebrand was accused of lack of luck in one of the goals. Porto won against their reserve team 4-0, with two goals from Walter, a player with, in my opinion, a great potential, just like other Porto players, such as James Rodriguez, Souza and Otamendi.

And let's get to the real issue. Portugal results were awful, to say the least. The best sector of our team, the defense, disappointed everyone and Eduardo, who had an amazing World Cup, returned completely different, making mistakes who showed some benfiquistas that maybe Benfica choosing Roberto was a good choice.

Against Cyprus, we started with the wrong foot, but in the end the game was a really good football demonstration, and the 8 goals show that. However, the lack of a leader, either in the field and at the bench, was obvious, with the team being completely lost and disorganized. In that game, the midfielders and strikers were deadly, but the goalie and defenders were horrible.

In the game at the Ulevaal against Norway, it was almost the same with a difference. The midfielders and strikers were at the same level as the defenders and goalkeeper, all playing *****. Norway completely deserved the victory.

With this massive crisis in the national team, there is only one way out of this: the dismissal of Queiroz (all his staff included) and the departure of the FPF president, Madail (all the direction included), who, during this whole story, were completely unable of taking decisions, and, when they did, they took the wrong ones. Tomorrow there will be a direction reunion, where Queiroz future will be decided. Hopefully, there will be no Queiroz future to discuss after that.

I've got a bet that Sporting & Benfica will win on the weekend? Should I be feeling pretty confident of that? :P Didn't want to bet on the Porto Braga match cus I couldn't decide a winner.

PCastro, can you confirm my opinion (the reason I ask is i only occasionally watch Portuguese football) that David Luiz is the best defender in the division? He seems to be a superb defender.

Yes. 100% IMO.

Tirath, you'd be right on paper, but with the start Benfica have had and the weaknesses in Sporting's team, anything could happen.

Just as DMF said, 100% true. David Luiz is, for me, the best defender in Portugal, and, IMO, is definitely in the worldwide top 7 CB. It is just a shame that some Sporting and Porto fans (not all of them, just some) can't get over it. They say he is a dirty player and that the referees are always with him, and try to depreciate his quality.

Luis Aragones & Marcelo Lippi wouldn't be a bad choice, but if you look at the quality spain and italy have, I think they won't do so well
don't see Scolari coming back
I know this may sound like I'm stupid, but who is Manuel Jose? I think I've heard that name before
But it's gonna be Paulo Bento. He'll make the team play with "tranquilidade" (tranquility) :P

I know you to told us not to say things like that, but I didn't see it on transfers

I didn't post it because the transfer was agreed in January 2010, I even think I posted that transfer in the last thread. But he is indeed a summer transfer, I will add him to the list.
Thank you for noticing.

Manuel Jose is a portuguese manager who is considered the African Mourinho, as he led Al-Ahly (EGY) to victory in their Champions League several times. He then went training Angola in the ACN, but without success. Currently training Al-Ittihad

I don't understand Roberto critics.
It's just been a few matches, lads. Let him some time until you start to fully judge him.

He's a very good keeper, you'll see.
If Atlético haven't kept him is just because of the other keeper they have as Asenjo or De Gea (the next spanish goal leyend in a few years, in my opinion).

A fantastic game between Porto and Braga, Hulk was tremendous once again :)

Maradona enjoyed seeing his name quoted as the Next Portugal manager ..

AfterMatch

This week, the highlights must be the result between Benfica and Guimaraes, and the horrible performance of Portugal's top referee Olegario Benquerença, as well as the result in the stunning game between Porto and Braga. I will also give my opinion on Queiroz dismissal and about the names which are being appointed to the job.

Friday at Estadio D. Afonso Henriques we saw there are things to worry about the portuguese referees. Olegario Benquerença, considered the best portuguese referee, had one of the worst refereeing I have ever seen. Some days after being honored by the Porto Football Association, Benquerença ignored two clear penalties against Benfica, and signed two offsides which would clearly lead to goals, as they left Saviola and Cardozo one-on-one with the keeper. His mistakes led Benfica 9 points away from Porto, and, with his decisions, Benfica had the worst start of the season for a long time.

But we can't blame the referee entirely. The team itself is disorganized, the defense is completely distracted. Players like David Luiz, Javi Garcia and Pablo Aimar, essential to the team's game, aren't the same and are having a performances far beyond the expectations.

Porto and Braga brought us one of the best games in the last two seasons. Both the teams played really good football, and had lots of opportunities, scoring great goals. Porto is, definitely, a fair leader at Liga ZON Sagres.

Sporting drew against Olhanense at home, with the team playing well, but with lack of accuracy. Olhanense even scored, but the referee considered that there was a foul. Another bad decision by the Portuguese referees.

Queiroz dismissal was nothing but predictable. With all that have been happening, this was the only way out.

The next Portugal manager must be someone with a strong personality and who plays an attacking and aggressive football. With that, Marcelo Lippi, Humberto Coelho and Manuel Jose are excluded, leaving Diego Maradona, Paulo Bento, Luis Aragones and Luiz Felipe Scolari as possible names. However, I don't believe that Aragones and Scolari would accept the job, and that leaves Paulo Bento and Diego Maradona. Personally, I'd rather prefer Maradona, as we need someone who can bring the portuguese back together with our national team, and I just can't see Paulo Bento doing that. But I think that the PFF will choose Paulo Bento due to his nationality and the wages, which would be far less than the ones they would pay Maradona.

I am extremely confident for the game with Sporting, I think it will be the turning point, and hopefully Porto will lose points with National Madeira.
