I will have special interest this season for portuguese league as Zapater has joined Sporting.

Hope the best for him (don't really care about the team, forgive me if there's any supporter in here).

That's easy to predict for the 5 tops
1. Porto
2. Benfica (with difference>5 pts
3. Sporting CP.
4. Braga(I see a big fight for the 3rd place, but imo Sporting can keep that place, possibly with difference<3 pts)
5. Vit. Guimaraes

AfterMatch

The AfterMatch will be a new thing I will bring to this thread. In it, four members will give their opinions on each fixture results, either in Liga ZON Sagres and Millenium and Carlsberg Cup, as well on the portuguese performance in the european competitions.

Those four members will include a representant from the Big 3 (Benfica, Porto and Sporting) and an independent view from a member with knowledge on the portuguese football. Each one will give their opinion on it every week after the football weekends.
Here are our guests:

Benfica - PCastro
Porto - jbolas
Sporting - bolase
General - DMF

Aftermatch
Well, let's get this rolling...

As this is the first aftermatch, I will take advantage and talk about the signings and pre-season, along with the two losses Benfica had against Porto and Academica.

When a team wins a championship, the first thing to do is trying to make it better. And what we did was everything but that. We lost our wings, and we can't fly without them. Di Maria and Ramires were a vital part of our game and now we have no one to back them, as Gaitan is far different from Di Maria and we have our right wing without anyone capable of taking it high. Besides, we definitely have a problem on the goalie position. Roberto is a good keeper, but has lot of pressure on his shoulders due to his poor exhibitions lately.

Keeping it short, we definitely need to buy some more players capable of giving us dynamic in the wings and to make something to ensure that Roberto starts playing as he knows.

The results we had, including last night's, were just predictable considering this. We aren't currently strong enough to fight for the title, that's for sure. The team is far below last season's performance and honestly, I think our manager isn't the same who arrived last season and promised us the title. Currently I think he is just finishing contract and looking forward to go abroad and manage out of Portugal.

If I had to predict a winner for this year's season, I would choose Porto. They have a new structure which is doing fine, a really good manager and an young team, with really quality players. They brought talent where they needed it, and are foming a really good team.

Aftermatch

After coming third last season, Porto need to desperately claim back the Portuguese Liga this season. Firstly a managerial change was needed which saw experienced Porto manager, Jesualdo Ferreira leave to Malaga to give younger manager, Andre Villas Boas a chance who did well last season with Academica and has previously worked under Jose Mourinho.

Porto surprised everyone when they managed to sign, Joao Moutinho from rivals, Sporting CP at a figure around 11 Million Euros plus Porto fringe player, Nuno Coelho. This saw club President, Pinto da Costa dip into his pocket after the sale of such key players in previous seasons. I think the signing of Moutinho is a great for the club, bringing in young Portuguese talent for a change when Porto have been previously criticised for bringing in too many South American players. The signing of James Rodriguez from Banfield could work to be a good investment for the club, signing a young player with lots of potential.

Porto have since won the Super Cup beating Benfica 2-0 with goals from Rolando and Falcao. This game showed Portuguese football fans what Porto can do this season and this has since proved to be the case after winning their first match against Naval after dominating for much of the game. The return of Hulk after a domestic ban will boost the clubs’ performance this season, his scoring is needed at Porto with Falcao not scoring as much as he should have last season.

The exit of Bruno Alves is a big loss for Porto. Alves became to be a first choice centre back for Portugal whilst at Porto and when paired with Rolando, leaked little goals. However a price tag of approx 25 Million Euros is good for Porto, for a player who is becoming old and can be easily replaced. Maicon has featured in the last two games in Bruno Alves’ position but hasn’t looked up to scratch to play for Porto. The sale of Alves to Zenit st Petersburg could trigger the signing of Nicolas Otamendi, according to rumours coming out of Portugal. If Porto can land Otamendi, this would defiantely boost the Porto defence however an 8 Million price tag could put Porto off which makes the deal seem unlikely. However Porto may have to settle for Sebastian Coates or Rafael Toloi to fill Bruno Alves boots in the heart of the defence.

At the moment I think Porto have got enough to win the title after a good pre season and winning the Super Cup. Porto have brought in the talent this summer and now look to build on last season’s disappointing third spot. Bringing in Andre Villas Boas as manager is key for Porto and I think both Benfica and Sporting lack quality managers which could prove to be their downfall this season. I hope Porto stick with their ever present attacking 4-3-3 formation which has seen them do well in the past. If Porto can keep key players fit they should win the league and after a disappointing World Cup for Portugal; I think Portuguese football is on the up.

The European Dream for Braga continues...

Last season's revelation, Braga, continued showing some Champions League quality defeating Sevilla in a game which could end with a massive win by the spanish side, highly familiarised with the biggest European competition. With less than a half their budget, Braga still managed to overcame them, with a result which leaves them really close to their UCL dream... Will they fullfil it?

Sporting last year came a very disappointing fourth, 23 points off Braga, who split up the big three in Portuguese football last year, this lead to Sporting bringing in Paulo Sergio from Vitoria Guimaraes in April last year to succeed Carlos Carvalhal, Paulo Sergio came effective as manager in July 2010. President, Bettencourt brought in Sergio to get Sporting back on track and gain a top 3 place this year, however between Bettencourt and Sergio they have already managed to get rid of two major key players in Joao Moutinho and Miguel Veloso, Captain Joao Moutinho was sold to rivals, Porto for 11 million Euros in a shock deal which saw Sporting fans, including myself very angry. If that wasn’t enough for fans another key player for Sporting, Veloso was sold to Genoa for 9 million Euros, these transfers lead Sporting fans into dismay. This saw Nuno Andre Coelho and Alberto Zapater move to Sporting from Porto and Genoa on a Part Exchange deal.

Sporting have also signed some players in the summer transfer window, these include Chilean player, Jaime Valdes who moved from Atlanta to Sporting for around 3 million Euros, he already looks like a good signing, Scoring in Pre season against Tottenham and helping Sporting become winners of the Barclays New York Challenge. Two left sided players also came in, Evaldo and Torsiglieri moved from Sporting Braga and Argentinean side, Velez Sarsfield. Maniche was brought in on a free transfer from Koln to partner Pedro Mendes in the centre of midfield to replace Miguel Veloso. I believe that Sergio has done some good business in bringing in Jaime Valdes and Maniche into the squad, both players featured in Sporting’s win against Fc Nordsjælland with Maniche scoring to seal a win in the 2nd leg for the Lisbon side, however I think that Sergio has paid over the odds for Evaldo and Torsiglieri paying 6.5 million for the pair, Sporting still need to bring in another goal scoring centre forward in this transfer window.

Sporting had a good start under Sergio, winning 2 – 0 against Man City in New York, leading them to win the Barclays New York Challenge and getting through a play off tie against Fc Nordsjælland, winning 3 – 1 on aggregate. Sporting play a first leg tie against Brondby IF tonight for a place in the Europa league, I would love Sporting to have a good run in the Europa league, after previously finishing runners up in 2005 to CSKA Moscow. Sporting’s first league game saw them play away at Pacos De Ferreira, Sporting dominated most of the match, with Liedson and others going close, but not being able to find a break through, at times Sporting didn’t look strong at the back, then finally on the 59th minute Rondon scored for Pacos to break the deadlock, Pacos became more confident and had more chances to wrap up the game comfortably towards the end, Polga had a great chance to level the match late on, but couldn’t direct the header goalwards, the game finally finished 1-0 to Pacos De Ferreira and leaving Sporting fans disappointed and missing Joao Moutinho’s touch of magic, which Nuno Andre Coehlo didin’t have.

I predict that Porto will win the league after bringing in good players, in Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez, hopefully Sporting can come in the top three and hopefully have a decent run in Europe or win a domestic cup. I am not happy at the way Bettencourt is running the club and feel if things don’t go the right way early on we will be in trouble once again and will need a managerial change.

I said hopefully, I don't follow Portugese football, but with this thread I will..

I've always like Sporting since I saw them play in which was then called the Uefa Cup a few years ago.
