So we're drawing 2-2 at Everton. We're absolutely battering them before midway through the 2nd half Huddlestone sticks our striker on a stretcher and gets sent off. Everton are down to ten men. Their midfield now only has 1 CM in it. There's a big gaping hole in the very same position that we're dominating.

Surely we should go on and win this? Nah, despite making NO changes to the team shape, Everton turn into Barcelona 09 and destroy me, winning 4-2. Seriously, how on earth does this make sense? I get them being harder to play with with ten men, but they should start playing like they have 12, should they?

Absolutely brilliant game this. Well done SI.
Oh I do love when the opposition go down to ten men, doesn't matter if they get sent off in the 5th minute, 10th minute or 15th get zero highlights the whole game, and the only highlights that are shown are the opposition passing around like their Barcelona. But of course if I go down to ten men it's a fecking onslaught..

Well you're wrong.

Chelsea were winning. I equalised.
That part of my post was an opinion. I was wrong - sweet. I don't mind. I don't necessarily need assistance or blame a game when I'm at fault so enjoy mediocrity buddy. 6 long shots, LOL.

So now you're just trying to make fun of him? I've seen you a lot around this forum and the amount of useful comments that you contribute is very low in comparison to the amount of comments you make, there's just no need to mock LiamOT, it doesn't help you or anyone else.

In my last 5 meetings against Man Utd, I've only been able to come away with 2 points. They're the only team I haven't been able to beat!

Tactics are inconsistent at best.. FM13 wasn't like this.
Personally i've found that plug and play tactics aren't too effective. Assessing home/away, opposition tactic, their strongest players, where to exploit etc. and implementing that into a tactic works wonders.

Very true. I have a patient tactic, a quicker tempo standard tactic and a gung-ho tactic. I change between them as needed, but for the most part my patient tactic is good enough.

What I'd like to see on the next version is a chalkboard. A chalkboard where you position the ball on it and decide how you want players to behave according to where the ball is on the pitch. That would be awesome and it's how you play IRL. It wouldn't take much; you'd have the positions on the chalkboard where you could position the ball central and on the wings and then decide your players positions/actions around that...Imagine how fun it would be to be able to design tactics dependant on where the ball is? :) I'd like that sort of depth

I think that the roles/duty/positions do quite a lot of that. However, it would be good to see a different screen for attacking and defending.

This. With SI going the route of player roles/duties, we won't have a wibble/wobble screen to manipulate anytime soon.

Dave's idea isn't completely dead though. What about seeing a wibble/wobble or chalkboard screen of sorts based on the roles we choose? We won't be able to move players on the screen, but we'd be able to see an estimation of where the player might find himself depending on where the ball is. It should be stressed that it's only an estimation. It's not robotic and player forward runs, roaming and attributes would influence it.

Exactly. It would still work with the roles and you wouldn't be able to have a DM magically appear at the edge of the opp box and then just appear edge of your box to stop their attack. For anchor man, for example, you'd almost have a red box in the position screen instructing you that this is his area of movement and you can instruct him to be where you IDEALLY would like him positioned on your tactics chalkboard depending on where the ball is on the pitch. My main frustration where this has come from is with FB's positioning, which I've found to be completely out of my hands on this edition. I'd want my FB to be inbetween the winger and my CB while the opp are building their attack...NOT right next to my CB and having to rush out ach time, all too often too late, to try and frantically close down the winger. I feel it's a half way point between the full control of sliders and the complete change these roles have introduced in this edition.

It's worse than the sliders (or as bad at least) from SI's point of view though. It's too open to exploitation, which was part of the reason the sliders were removed from our control and the entire reason the Wibble/Wobble screen was removed all those years ago. Right now, the AI uses the same tools that we do and it seems like that's the way SI want it.

That's why I suggested we still see the screen showing approximate positioning, but that it be view-only.

Yeah, maybe. I just HATE watching each time how FB's behave like idiots and not being able to do anything about it. It's understandable that better opposition will manipulate you but even I would stand a chance of getting past Ashley Cole if he defended like FB's do on this thing :p 3 ****** CD's and the FB still has the positional sense of a goldfish. You shouldn't have to try and manipulate shape of the formation just to try and get better positions. Not only try to push to manipulate it and force them wider using 3 CD's, but then it still doesnt work!!! Such a small thing an it ruins the game for me really

Are you saying that fullbacks stay too narrow and defend too close to the centre backs? I've noticed it too on lower mentalities. It's not a problem against the AI AMR, because that's usually the IF. It is a problem against the AML who is usually a winger, so he's close to the touchline and in acres of space. In those cases, I either specific man-mark him if my fullback is very far away or close down OI if my fullback is relatively close, but still too far. Seems to work!

Yeah, its that they come too narrow. They generally come in narrow and mark the striker along with the CD. Why would I want that? I've tried the marking the winger/wide am specifically but then they leave the gap in between them and the CB for through balls. There is no middle ground. As a manager I should be able to instruct my FB to stay in the gap in between the CB and the winger to be close enough to close down the winger but plug the gap for through balls. I can either go one extreme or the other on theis edition which is frustrating. I concede 80% of goals through the winger having too much space to be able to cross or just go past my frantically closing down FB, or they're just left in the box. Even when I have 3 CD's the FB still comes in narrow to mark the striker. I want a chalkboard to plonk my dot in that gap when the opp are building up. I used to play as an FB and the golden rule is to be goalside...thats the golden role for any defender. After that, a fb should be close enough to close down a winger but not be leaving the defence vulnerable to through balls by sticking to close to your CB...it's 101

So my side (have won two titles in a row and with the best defence) have just forgotten how to defend. It's been a theme all season despite making no changes from my previous rock solid defence and how we've set up. Very logical.

If Giroud played as good as he looks i'd maybe win a major trophy... maybe...

"Forgotten how to defend" is a dead giveaway that you don't really know what you're doing or you can't explain it. That doesn't make it illogical.

Team will eventually exploit your weaknesses, you have to develop your tactic for the opponent/each season.
