I've played football manager and before that championship manager for a decade but today I've decided I'm done with it. I've registered here to just vent my frustration that something that was such a large part of my life has now become nothing but annoying.
Many times in this thread has it been mentioned about the bizarre bad luck that seems dominate the game unless some kind of wonder tactic is used. And I just can't cope with it anymore. It's realistic that once in a while a team will dominate a match and not win. Of course, that's football. But it happening every other week is just preposterous.
My players are not taking ridiculously long shots. I have world class strikers. I'm using attacking movement training and employing expert shooting coaches. So to go through your first three games of the season, having a total of 77 shots, 40 on target, and losing all three, 1-0, 2-0 and 1-0 despite the opposition having only a combined 4 shots on target is ridiculous. I lost to Reading in my second game 2-0 and they didn't even a shot on goal! In the meantime I hit the woodwork about a dozen times, my defender narrowly missed 5 or 6 headers from corners, I had two dissallowed goals, a penalty claim turned down and Leandro Damaio missed numerous one on one chances.
If I was going through a barren spell I could understand it. But this is the beginning of my third season and I've missed the title by a couple of points in both previous seasons. It's almost as if the games is making sure I don't win it this season by fixing results. For two seasons I've watched world class performances by opposition goalkeepers. I've tried on occasion to tweek my tactics to get around the bad luck but generally my philosophy throughout years of football manager games is 'let the opposition worry about my team.' I've now realised they don't have to. They could just rock up with a goalkeeper and **** striker and they'll stand a good chance.
Last season, I put a 16 year old in goal for two months because whoever I play in goal, they don't save anything anyway. In one game i put Yaya Sanogo in goal to get him some match fitness. Whereas the opposition seem to have some god-like hero between the sticks every week. I have a wealth of attacking talent but rarely score more than 3 a game, and even on poor days I'm having 10 shots on goal. And at no point in the two full seasons have i had a lucky result go my way. Never. If the stats are even, I lose. If a team dominates mine, I lose. If I dominate them I'll get a draw or scrape a win.
So, for me this game is dead. I've had spells in previous versions of the game where bad luck has affected me, but not for over two years! Add this to the other annoyances mentioned here, particularly players asking for sky high wages and then signing for someone else for a pittance and you've got a **** game.
I don't want someone to say 'Oh just use this tactic' because thats not the way I roll. For me, they have just arsed up this game. The teamtalks are a shambles. The options do not include what needs to be said, or have the opposite affect to what you're expecting. Too much emphasis has been put on this in the match engine along with tactics. A lot of football managers still believe you win games by having the best players. Not with this game though. As I planned my pre-season transfers, I thought 'what's the point?.' The quality of the players doesn't seem to matter. I'd happily swap the opposition goalkeeper with mine before the match starts every week. I could have 21 year old Pele and Van Basten up front, but the game would find a way to stop them scoring. At the other end, the ball would ricochet off Heskeys **** past my keeper who would be in some kind of trance, and i lose again. Or do I? Ten minutes left. I'l put on another striker, and hit the bar a few more times...
Adidos Football Manager. Time to check out how LMA has come on in the last decade. When games are once more decided by the quality of your players (think the last one was football manager 2006) I might try it again....
