Hello all, welcome to GodCubed's Aston Villa Guide. Within this guide you will find a wealth of knowledge and ideas I have amassed over many (and I mean many) files as Villa in FM 2011. Note that I am not going to tell you exactly how to play: All I will do is recommend, and you can mix and match for yourself, though this is a pretty exhaustive guide. Villa are a very entertaining club to play with on FM11, a top-flight club with young talent, room to expand and a reasonable budget so you can put your own stamp on things. So sit back and absorb, like an overeager claret and blue sponge.

Name: Aston Villa Football Club
Chairman: Randy Lerner
League: Premier League
Last year: 6th
Nicknames: The Villa, The Villans, The Lions
Rivals: Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion

1.) Expectations and Housekeeping

1A: Expectations

To start off with, expectations. You have four, as seen below: Top half, Continental qualification, Title challenge, and Winner. It's really up to you what you choose, but you have a good enough squad to compete for Europe and a forgiving enough board to retain you if you fail, so I'd suggest Continental qualification. This gives you a transfer budget of £6.5 mil and a wage budget of £1.1 mil.

Possible choices

1B: Housekeeping

On FM11, Villa are saddled with some good, and some truly diabolical staff.

Assistant Manager: Gary McAllister
1st Team Coach: Gordon Cowans
Coach: Kevin MacDonald
Gk Coach: Rafa Gonzalez
Fitness Coach: Robert Duverne
Youth Coach: Sean Verity, Ben Petty, Tony McAndrew, Mark Delaney
Physio: Stuart Walker, Alan Smith, Paul Rastrick
Scout: Jeff Vetere, John O'Hare, Mel Machin, Lil Fuccillo

We'll start off with the good. Robert Duverne is a top-class, four and a half star fitness coach on a low wage, so he's safe. Likewise Rafa Gonzalez is a four star goalkeeping coach, so it's quite alright to keep him. Tony McAndrew is a very handy coach who I tend to give a Coach contract in order to utilise his 4 star defence rating in my first team, and Kevin MacDonald is a good allrounder. Gary McAllister is a decent enough assistant manager, but it's up to you whether you want to replace him, and Gordan Cowans is a pretty good coach but may not be up to everyone's exacting standards. Jeff Vetere is also a good scout, though good ratings on Working with Youngsters, Adaptability, Determination and Judging Potential are offset slightly by a poor Judging Ability rating. I tend to keep him; his adaptability makes him perfect for a roaming role around Europe looking for youngsters.

Now we move onto the bad, which is pretty much everyone else. Delaney, Petty and Verity are all complete ****. Get rid of them without a second thought. This is the same with all your physios: they're rubbish, bin them. As for scouts, Machin is terrible, he goes without a doubt. O'Hare I tend to get rid of also, along with Fuccillo if I can.

Suggested Ins and Outs:

Out: McDonald, Delaney, Petty, Verity, Machin, O'Hare, Walker, Smith, Rastrick, Fuccillo.

In:

Ebbe Sand - Coach - A good free coach, giving you a 4 star attacking option.
Tosh Farrell - Coach - Offer him a coach contract. Cheap, and gives you a four star shooting coach.
Massimo Bonini - Coach - Give him a coach contract, and you get a four star defence or tactics coach for little.
Giambattista Venturati - Coach - A good all-round coach.
Marco Rota - Coach - Another free coach who can multitask.
Bernhard Peters - Youth Coach - as a youth coach Peters is superb.
Nello Malizia - Gk Coach - I like to have two goalkeeping coaches to increase specialisation, and he's a favourite of mine. 4.5 star.
Michelangelo Rampulla - Gk Coach - If for some reason Rafa Gonzalez turns out to be 3.5 stars rather than 4, Rampulla is my go-to man. 4 stars.
Paul Winsper - Fitness Coach - Again, I like to increase specialisation in fitness, and Winsper is both free and 4.5 stars.
Andrea Pastorello - Scout - Extremely competent scout.
Simon Hunt - Scout - Another good scout, on a free, and has the added bonus of being English and therefore having a full knowledge of the English leagues.
Salvatore Libra, Javier Vasquez, Marco Frigerio - Physios - Not much to say. All are top-class physios, Frigerio in particular.

1C: Extra Bits

I tend to ask the board for two things. One, that they improve the youth facilities. This is generally granted. Two, I usually ask for a tad more transfer budget, in order to boost my funds. This is often granted if I adjust my budget to the most wages before asking.

2.) Squad

Gerard Houllier (and by extension, you) has inherited a talented but small squad from his predecessor Martin O'Neill. Blessed with pace, power and defensive solidity, it is up to you how you get your team to perform. As you have a biggish budget, it's easy to mould the squad into the team you want.

Before we start the squad members proper, I want to talk about formations. Villa have the ability to play three quite successfully: 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, or 4-3-3. Personally, I favour the 4-2-3-1 and I think it fits Villa the best, but it really is up to you. However, I will be basing this on a 4-2-3-1 Deep formation.

A glance at an untouched first team squad, in my favoured formation.

2A: Goalkeepers

Brad Friedel
Brad Guzan

Notes: You have a big call to make here. Friedel is good enough for the Prem and Guzan is more than capable backup, but Friedel's decline is precipitous. If you keep him for the whole season, towards the end he will make mistakes. You have three options. Either sell him now and buy a replacement, keep him until January and buy and replacement, or keep him for the whole season. It all depends on how confident you are in big Brad's abilities, but I generally go half and half and buy in January.

Suggested Buys/Sells: Sergio Romero - 10.5 mil, Ospina - 11 mil, or Jefferson - 11 mil if you really want to replace Friedel. However, I suggest waiting until January.

2B: Defenders

Luke Young
Habib Beye
Kyle Walker (on loan)
Carlos Cuellar
Richard Dunne
James Collins
Stephen Warnock
Ciaran Clark

Notes:
In Cuellar and Dunne you have a rock steady central defensive partnership, and Collins is more than capable either for backup or pushing for first team. Ciaran Clark is a good young backup with the potential to develop. Get Dunne to tutor him.

Beye, again, is strangely good in FM11, but ageing. Sell him to get his wages off the bill. Luke Young looks like he isn't good enough for a starting berth, and whilst he plays better than he looks, the on loan rampaging right-back Kyle Walker is more than good enough to take his place, though Young is good backup for both flanks. You will need to invest in a new left-back, as Warnock is pretty dire. Backup is needed on the left too. Generally what I do is ignore it: Young can cover both left and right, and Cuellar is a capable right back too.

Suggested Buys/Sells: Depending on how much you want to spend and if you want to spend it, there are a wealth of options at left back. Taye Taiwo - 6 mil is my favourite, but others like Fabio Coentrao - 10 mil and Vurnon Anita - 5 mil are also good alternatives.

Sell Beye for as much as you can get for him. I usually manage 2.5 mil.

2C: Midfielders

Stiliyan Petrov
Jean II Makoun
Michael Bradley (on loan)
Nigel Reo-Coker
Steve Sidwell
Robert Pires
Ashley Young
Stewart Downing
Marc Albrighton
Stephen Ireland (away on loan)
Fabian Delph
Barry Bannan

Notes: A thin midfield, but one that has quite some talent. Going on my 4-2-3-1 formation, Reo-Coker and Makoun are my two midfield terriers, sitting deep and breaking up play. Reo-Coker is mobile, aggressive and a gem of a defensive midfielder (though strangely he isn't natural there: I'd suggest retraining him to turn natural there) who can also fill in at right back in times of absolute crisis. Makoun is capable of stepping up into more advanced positions and lends a touch of culture to the midfield. I tend to use Reo-Coker as a Defensive Mid - Defend and Makoun as a Defensive Mid - Support. Petrov and Bradley are capable replacements for either, with Bradley being a talented young player.

Attack wise, you have the obvious Villa crown jewel of Ashley Young. His mediocre attributes belie a player who, when used correctly, can be the focal point of your entire attack. Either as an inside forward, a winger or an attacking midfielder when moved inside, he is versatile and dangerous. I prefer to set him as an Inside Forward - Attack on the left with bundles of creative freedom and a license to roam. This can be complimented by Taiwo or similar charging up the left flank to good effect.

Ireland is on loan, but is a quality player (rather unrealistically). On the right wing we have a dilemma, however. We want a proper winger there, to stretch play and provide the width missing from Young's cutting inside on the other flank. This SHOULD be performed by Marc Albrighton, but SI have wierdly rated him extremely badly (somewhat fixed in the patch). Either way, I'd set them as a Winger - Attack.

Pires is a useful backup whose attributes drop off a cliff halfway through a season, so I'd sell him in January. Downing is good backup, no more (again annoyingly, considering real life). Delph will decline in the reserves due to his damaged cruciates, but you can either sell him or bring him up to the first team in January. Something I have literally just noticed (and forced me into putting a little extra onto this) is that the mad scotsman Barry Bannan has been upgraded in the patch. He slots right into a 4-3-3 formation, or can be retrained to fit a 4-2-3-1. Either way, he is decent.

Suggested Buys/Sells: Buy a speedy right winger of your choice. Gervinho and Alexis Sanchez are good examples for around £10 mil. David Hoilett is also a good cheaper, younger choice, or indeed Park Ji-Sung would be a viable, listed choice.

What I have done recently is followed what will most likely happen in real life, and sold Ashley Young for a fee over 10 million. Downing I have also sold for around 5-7.5 million. As their replacements I bring in the likes of Willian from Shakhtar, whose price varies from 6 mil up to 10. As a left winger, Lucas from Sao Paulo costs a mere 6.75 mil and is very good, meaning I have replaced two players with two younger, better ones for roughly the same price.

2D: Forwards

John Carew (away on loan)
Emile Heskey
Gabby Agbonlahor
Nathan Delfouneso
Darren Bent

Notes: The newly bought Darren Bent adds a great deal to your firepower. More or less the stereotypical poacher, his performances in the game follow that of real life; he generally plays badly until he scores, which he does at a fair rate considering his finishing, composure, off the ball and pace. Agbonlahor is also superb poacher. Heskey, unfortunately, is both not great and a pain to get rid of. If you can sell Heskey, do, for whatever money: consider 500k good going.

Don't sell Agbonlahor. Like Young, his attributes are deceptive. As one of the fastest players in the world (though his speed has been downgraded), his pace will make him a threat no matter the condition. He's no lightweight either, with a strength of 16. Just the very threat of Agbonlahor or Bent causes the opposition to either drop deep or concede the advantage to you. A note, however: make sure you untrain his "plays with back to goal" PPM, as it blunts his effectiveness somewhat. Thanks to his speed attribute drop in the new patch, he can develop more freely, allowing you to mould him to your desire a bit more.

If you're playing Agbonlahor (and I would), start him as either an Advanced Forward or a Poacher. Delfouneso is a gem of a player, and a great prospect: keep him as your sub or replacement sub. He will develop and turn into a good player.

Suggested Buys/Sells: If you can, sell Heskey for 1 mil. Apart from that, no real work is needed if you're playing 1 up front.

2E: Suggested Transfer Business Summary

Buys:

Taye Taiwo - 6 mil up front
Gervinho - 5 mil up front, 5 mil over time

Total: 11 mil up front, 5 over time.

Sales:

Beye - 2.5 mil over time
Heskey (if possible) - 1 mil up front
Downing - 7.5 mil

Total:
8.5 mil up front, 2.5 mil over time.

3.) Extras

Club Captains: Petrov doesn't mind being replaced, and I suggest you do it. I generally appoint Dunne as captain and Reo-Coker as his vice-captain. Both have high influences and should be in or around your first team, so safe choices there.

Youth policy: Villa have a good mix of youngsters and grizzled vets, so I suggest investing in a youth policy if you have some money left over. They will also reap the benefits from your soon to be rebuilt youth facilities.

Style of play: As a rule Villa are an extremely proficient counterattacking side, using the pace of Young, Bent and Agbonlahor to unlock defences. It's a very effective tactic, this, made all the easier if you buy a speedy right winger.

A small tip - if you want to do this, try a 4-2-3-1 counterattacking formation with deep midfielders, and buy a playmaker in the mould of Pirlo, for example Andrea Poli. The opposition break themselves on your defence who then move it to your DLP via your other defensive midfielder, and he can find Young and Agbonlahor with raking crossfield passes. Just a tip, as it has worked well for me on more than one occasion.

Friedel's coaching: If you ask him at the right moment, Friedel often likes to become a coach later on. He will be quite a good one, too.

Benjamin Siegrist:
Bit of a mystery, but with good tutoring he looks like he could become a very decent keeper. Let me know if he does though, I'll be interested.

Win a cup: A cup is invaluable for Villa, to increase reputation and generate extra cashflow.

Training: Try to focus on passing. Villa's passing is pretty bad for a top-half side, so focus on passing and bring through youngsters who are less caveman, more artist. Bannan is a good example.

And that should be about it. Have fun playing as Villa and thank you for reading! Feedback is more than welcome. ;)

Hey thanks. If someone actually manages to read through it, I will be impressed. It's pretty in-depth.

Actually pal on a serious note, do you mind if i use the layout of yours as a base to do a Birmingham one myself?

Quality guide mate, all round. Was going to start a game with Villa so was going to use this but decided to go with West Ham instead (more of a challenge).

good guild started a villa save a few days ago and enjoying it :)

i also went with a 4-2-3-1 and struggled to ditch Heskey (finally managed to con liverpool into loaning him and paying his full wages as well as giving me 100k :D)

highly recommend park from united (as you have said)

and Arturo Videl from Leverkusen

Good read, will definitely come in handy for some people. Well written GodCubed :)

Thanks. I had literally just started a Villa game about 2 horus before this, so this is really going to help!

I've started a new game just so I can use this guide , the only thing is that i'm still on the Demo so a lot of the staff you suggested aren't on it but still very well done for making this. This will sure help a lot of people who are managing Villa . Thanks a lot :)

Great guide, always be interested in a Villa save and after reading through all of this will definitely have one some day :)

great guide i would like to see all guides use this layout

that's a good guide, i readed it all, but i won't be using it since i'm finishing my second season with villa :p

Not at all, go for it. :)

Thanks. Park and Vidal are both good buys, Vidal's useful as he can play a bit too rather than just being a pure destroyer. Good work on Heskey, generally he's a hard ******* to shift. ;)

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. Just had a look at a save I was running as an unemployed manager, and it turns out Albrighton STILL doesn't improve at all, so yeah, discard him. Bannan's pretty good though, he's definitely been improved.

Oh really? How're you doing?

i came up second in the league and won Europa League in first season. So far in the second season i won the league cup (against birmingham in the final :p) and i'm in quarter finals of the champions after beating Bayern Munich. I'm struggling in the league, sitting 8th but hoping to finish 4th
