Championship basement boys Preston have sacked manager Darren Ferguson.

Ferguson has paid the price after a diastrous run of form which sees Preston head into 2011 rock-bottom of the Championship.

The final straw for the Preston board was Tuesday's 3-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Middlesbrough.

Ferguson took charge of Preston in January 2010 and he guided them to safety last season.

However, Preston have endured a miserable run of form this season, winning just five of their 22 games in the league this term.

Tuesday's defeat to Middlesbrough left Preston five points adrift of safety and the club's board have decided to look for a new boss.

A club statement read: "At a board meeting held today the directors of Preston North End decided to terminate the position of Darren Ferguson as manager.

"The club expressed their appreciation of the efforts made by Darren but felt that the league position represented a significant threat to the club and it was felt that a change of manager might bring better fortune."

Hardly suprising, they are beginning to be cut adrift.

People forget what he did with Peterborough. In his first semi-season of manager, he led them to 10th place, and safety. In his first full season, he got them promoted. In his second season, he got them promoted AGAIN. He was then sacked as a League 2 side couldn't compete in the Championship.

He has talent. Write him off at your own peril.

I have no idea on the strength of Preston's squad, but not many managers are going to stay propping up the table.

People say he shouldnt get compared to his dad etc but he should stop borrowing players off him and fend for himself like every other manager does and he might get some respect for achieving something like he did when he was managing Peterborough.

not in the championship, chairmen are notoriously short on patience in that league

how many players did he loan, and how many do we loan out? Its not like it didnt benefit united for those players to go there.

It's not like SAF did it for the sake of his son, and why wouldn't he loan players from a bigger league. Many clubs rely on parent clubs for loan signings, are you saying lower league managers should stop loaning players from premiership clubs?

It's a shame, he had the clubs best interest at heart, but he just couldn't cut it. He got rid of some of the **** like Neil Collins, Chaplow and Darren Carter, but he just can't seem to get us organised at the back, or the front.

Phil Brown was sat in the directors box with his assistant at the Boro game on Saturday jotting down notes. He's the hot favourite at the moment.

more time ? we are 5 points from saftey , he doesnt have a clue on how to manage at this level , he got sacked at scunthorpe because he wasnt up to the job and we should never have appointed him , he lives off his dads rep and have took us from being a tpo half team to a team that is struggling to win a game
