I've been having some success playing a 4-3-3 with two inside forwards, positioned on the tactics screen as far wide and as far forward as possible, i.e. as wide as an AM R or AM L but as far forward as a striker.

I'm a bit confused as to whether I should be playing strikers in that position, or wingers. On the tactics screen, if I place a player who is naturally a ST in there, he shows up as bright green. If I place a natural AM R in there, he's red, so according to that I should play natural strikers in there.

However, when you look at a player's stats after playing them in there, the "games played in position" count suggest the player has been playing as "attacking midfielder right/left", not "striker".

Also, if I look at my assistant's team report and suggested team sheet, where it shows the number of stars against a player, for the inside forwards, their star rating is based on how good they are as AM R/L, not ST.

So, should I play strikers or wingers in there, or doesn't it matter?

I would advise trying to put players who can play in both position e.g STURRIDGE( AML/ST) and ANELKA (AMR/FC) that's what i would do if i used winger/strikers

I'd like opinions on this also. I think you should play wingers personally, but it'd be ideal to play midfielders who can play up front (eg ronaldo & messi)

In T T and F it calls them wing forwards. i think they are fairly rare in the modern game, but as suggested by someone above, i think it is players like Anelka or Suarez who can play well as winger inside forward and poacher.

Thanks. I've basically been playing people in there based on their attributes and generally use a striker who is accomplished as a wide man too etc, and they have been quite effective.

I guess the question is more about game mechanics. I imagine that somewhere, there is a factor the game uses to scale down a player's ability, depending on whether he is "natural", "accomplished", "competent" etc at a particular position.

For most positions, e.g. central defence, its obvious that you should play players who are natural DCs over those who are just accomplished, all other things being equal. Its just that for this position, its not clear how the game handles it. As I've been taking a team up through the divisions, there tend to be a lot of players to choose from at around at similar abilities, so I'm often choosing between buying a player who is natural ST accomplished AM, or the other way round.

Apart from that minor concern, they seem to be doing the job pretty well, with more dangerous cutting inside and shots on goal than if they were playing as conventional AM R/L, but also providing more crosses than if I move them central in a normal 4-3-3.

I think it is best to play a striker in that position. Bit is even better if the striker can play as winger aswell. (Someone like pato, suarez, c.ronaldo does a great job in that position) And if you use someone who can play both striker and winger you can always move him to AML/AMR when holding on to a lead.
