Rafael Benítez today claimed the award for Manager of the Month for the month of August, having played three matches during the month the Reds managed to pick up 9 points by securing wins again Southampton, Manchester City and Arsenal.
Daniel Sturridge also picked up the award for Player of the Month for August having scored 6 goals in the opening three fixtures, although all 6 of the goals came from only two of the matches. An incredible month for the former Chelsea striker as he looks to pick up where he left off last season.
The month began with a 4-0 victory over Southampton on the opening day before a 1-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium, Mario Balotelli nabbing the only goal of the game against his former club, a clean defensive performance from Liverpool ensured that they kept the clean sheet in what could be a very big fixture come the end of the season.
Following this victory the Reds headed back to Anfield where they took on fellow top 4 candidates Arsenal, the Gunners looking ever stronger with the addition of Alexis Sanchez to an already strong squad.
However it was Liverpool that took the spoils in stunning fashion as the Reds romped their way to a 6-0 victory, an absolute thrashing that echoed the 5-1 victory from last season. Alberto Moreno opening the scoring from a tight angle before a four piece from English International Daniel Sturridge put the Reds 5-0 up after 70 minutes. Summer acquisition Lazar Markovic completed the rout after 84 minutes with a well timed finish.
The stats don't lie when you see the shots count standing at 27 to 2. Liverpool dominated the ball for large periods of the game and looked threatening every-time they went forwards. Arsenal were powerless to prevent the demolition on the day with the gap between defence and midfield allowing Raheem Sterling to run riot. Arsenal's decision not to buy a strong anchor man proving to be a poor one...
The results currently leave Liverpool joint-top of the league after the opening three fixtures with the Reds having scored 10 goals while not conceding a single goal. A superb start for Benítez's men as he looks to bring Anfield the Premier League title it so desperately desires.
September Fixtures
Some big away ties lie ahead for Liverpool in September as the Reds travel to Turf Moor and St. James' Park before taking on title chasers Chelsea in what could be one of the biggest game of the seasons. A couple of Cup matches also provide Liverpool with a chance to rotate the squad as they look to get the whole squad involved.
There will be similarities but the thread itself is a cumulative layout from a lot of stories that I've read on this site. Some of the information will be similar but in places the save will hopefully begin to go in its own direction. In the OP I credited Brendn for his layout and detail.
Liverpool Football Club have today confirmed the outgoing loan deals of 7 players from the clubs youth teams. Daniel Cleary, Joe Maguire, Pedro Chirivella, Ryan McLaughlin, Connor Randall, Sergi Canos and Lloyd Jones have all secured loan deals away from Merseyside to gain experience with clubs situated throughout the Football Leagues system.
Rafael Benítez prides himself on developing young talent and it is believed that the deals for these youngsters will allow them to further their match experience by getting minutes on the pitch for the first-team(s), as opposed to the youth matches.
The players' progress will be monitored by Benítez and staff alike over the course of the 2014/15 campaign with a spot in the first-team on the mind for these youth prospects.
Liverpool have began their 2014/15 Champions League campaign in disastrous fashion following a 2-1 defeat away in Israel to Maccabi Tel-Aviv. The Reds failed to put in a performance on the night and were shocked by last minute winner as Solodocho rose high to head home a dramatic winner for the Israeli's.
Liverpool fans held high hope for this season's return to the Champions League after finishing 2nd in the league last season, and after being drawn alongside Juventus and Barcelona there was certainly an expectation and a need to pick up points against 4th seed Tel-Aviv.
However the Israeli's simply looked better on the night after taking an early lead through a Diego Reyes own goal, a nightmare debut for the young Mexican as he could only bundle the ball past Mignolet in the Liverpool goal. Mamadou Sakho netted the equaliser late on for Liverpool before a dramatic 93rd minute goal knocked them to their knees. Nobody expected this result!
Elsewhere Barcelona and Juventus drew 1-1 meaning Liverpool now sit bottom of the group, there's a lot of work ahead for Rafael Benítez and his players.
Liverpool have today been knocked out of the Capital One Cup in the Third Round following a 2-1 defeat to Burnley at Anfield. Benítez put a lot of faith in his young guns with Harry Wilson, Jordan Rossiter and Jordan Ibe all making senior appearances.
Things got off to a good start when Jordan Ibe bagged his first senior goal for the club, a lovely finish at the back-post as he latched onto a Harry Wilson assist, one youngster to another!
However a brace either side of half-time from Ashley Barnes ensured that the newly promoted side would be progressing into the next round. Fans will be disappointed on the day but with both European Football and a title to challenge for there certainly won't be a lingering disgust at the clubs early exit.
It was a tough encounter but the youth of Liverpool failed to break down the experienced Burnley defence, but there were positive signs for the Liverpool prospects.
Rafael Benítez has once again been named Manager of the Month after Liverpool's impressive start to the 2014/15 season, September saw the Reds face matches against Burnley, Newcastle and Chelsea. After not conceding a single goal in their first 3 matches the momentum was definitely with the Reds heading into these fixtures.
The month started with an away trip to Turf Moor where Liverpool took on newly Promoted Burnley Football Club in what would be a very close encounter. Daniel Sturridge bagged the only goal of the game after 12 minutes when he slid home Philippe Coutinho's cross past Tom Heaton.
Despite a late Burnley resurgence Liverpool were able to hold strong defensively and took the 3 points back to Anfield, an impressive performance on the day.
Liverpool then traveled to St. James' Park to take on a Newcastle side under the management of former Assistant Manager John Carver, but a strong attacking performance from the Reds proved to be too much as they scraped the points in a thrilling 3-2 victory.
Rémy Cabella opened the scoring after 4 minutes before Raheem Sterling pegged one back immediately in the 5th minute. Mamadou Sakho then scored from another set-piece to give the visitors the 2-1 lead before Italian striker Fabio Borini quickly doubled the advantage three minutes later.
Sammy Ameobi scored a late goal to give the game a dramatic finish but the goal seemed to come all too late in the game as the traveling team managed to hold out for the points on the day.
The final game of the month saw league leaders Liverpool take on 2nd placed Chelsea at Anfield. Rafael Benítez being put up against his old team for the first time since his departure with José Mourinho now in charge of the club, an exchange of words took place before the game with both managers still looking to get inside the others head, something we're all too familiar with.
However it was Benítez who came out on top in the end with Liverpool picking up their 6th straight victory following a 3-2 win over Chelsea.
The game took 23 minutes to open the scoring with controversial striker Mario Balotelli firing the Reds into the lead following an Adam Lallana set-piece, the lead was short lived as Loic Rémy, the man who was linked with a Summer move to Anfield put the Blues back on level terms 10 minutes from the break.
Balotelli had other intentions as the Italian picked up his 2nd goal of the game in injury time to send Liverpool into the lead heading into half-time, a superb display so far with both teams attacking with desire.
Just after the hour mark Rémy put Chelsea level once more but it was former Chelsea prospect Fabio Borini who fired the winner 15 minutes from time, the Italian rounding Thibaut Courtois before slotting the ball into the empty net, a superb finish from a man who was deemed surplus to requirements only a few months ago. The Italian Job!
A brilliant performance by Liverpool on the day and a well deserved victory for Benítez and his men.
The win over Chelsea leaves the Reds 5 points clear after the opening 6 games having picked up 6 victories on the bounce, Rafael Benítez will be delighted with his teams started to the season but the Spaniard will know that he has to keep the momentum going if Liverpool are to mount a serious challenge for the title.
September Results
A good month for the Reds overall as they managed to pick up victories in all three of their league matches, however the Cup defeats will have hurt Liverpool with the club now needing a slice of luck if they are to qualify from the Champions League group stages. Benítez can take some comfort in that the losses don't seem to have affected the league momentum. October Fixtures
October is set to be a massive month for Liverpool's European dream with the club desparately needing to pick up some points from their home ties against Barcelona and Juventus, it doesn't come much tougher than that but if the Reds are to qualify past the group stage they'll need to make a serious effort.
In terms of the league Liverpool face games against West Bromwich Albion, West Ham United and Leicester City..Can the Reds pick up another 9 points?
Liverpool full-back Glen Johnson has today been ruled out of action for up to 5 months after the defender broke down during the Reds 3-2 victory over Chelsea on Saturday afternoon. The defender didn't seem to feel the effect of any contact but instead fell to the ground holding his knee before signalling to the bench that a substitution was necessary.
Liverpool's club doctor has today announced that the Englishman is suffering from knee tendonitis and will be out of action for the foreseeable future.
This injury along with the long-term injury to fellow full-back José Enrique is beginning to leave Rafael Benítez short of options in the defensive areas. Javi Manquillo and Alberto Moreno are now the Reds only two full-backs meaning there is a lack of ability to rotate when the players become tired, Moreno himself is still recovering from a short term injury. Academy graduate Jon Flanagan also remains out of action, it's a tough situation for the Spanish Manager to be in.
The Reds may find themselves having to resort to an emergency loan, unless they opt to switch to a different formation.
Haha don't worry, I'm not like some of the Liverpool fans you see around these parts..United deserved the victory, poor first half performance from us and a stupid decision from Gerrard..We looked the better team after pulling one back but with a man advantage I think United were always gonna come out on top. Personally I feel Phil Jones should have walked, not for a straight red but for two bookable offences, that tackle on Lallana was rash to say the least!
Agreed though, Coutinho and Mata have been brilliant lately.
