"Is it serious doc?" I asked tentatively as the physio read off of his clipboard.

"I'm really sorry Rickie, it looks like an anterior cruciate ligament tear"

My blood ran cold as his words hit me, the famous ACL injury that has ended so many careers before.

"So what do we do? how long am I out for?"

"Rickie there is no easy way of saying this, but you're 32 years old, your body isn't able to heal as quickly as it once did, these injuries take time.. time that you dont have..."

"Woah woah woah, what are you saying?" I asked, although I already knew the answer.

"Rickie I think it might be time you considered hanging up your boots, this could leave you out of action for a year, maybe more.. your body is trying to tell you its time"

Ben Morsley - "Hi Rickie, Ben Morsley, Sky Sports... this must have come as quite a sudden shock to you? what was your first reaction?"

Rickie Lambert - "I was devastated, I never imagined my career ending this way.. I felt as fit as ever but I guess my body just isn't what it used to be. Its been an absolutely crazy week or so but it's time to move forward now"

BM - "You talk about moving forward, what does the future hold for you now?"

RL - "Football is what I know to be honest with you, its been my whole life for as long as I can remember, I definitely want to stay in the game in one form or another, I will just have to keep my eyes open for any opportunities that arise".

BM - "Is management something you could possibly look in to?"

RL- "I think so yeah, as I said before I really dont know what the future holds but I can see getting my coaching badges and looking into management as a logical step"

BM - "How have the club looked after you in the last week?"

RL- "Yeah, listen, they have been fantastic. The medical staff here at Liverpool are amongst the best in the world and I trust them completely. The club as a whole has given me all the time and space I need to make this difficult decision and I would like to thank them for all their support."

I'm sat comfortably in the passenger seat of the family range rover next to my wife Amy, who is having to drive because of my injury, when my phone rings.

"Hello, Rickie speaking" I answer.

"Hi Rickie, It's Les Reed here from Southampton, How you doing?"

"Oh, Les, hi, what can I do for you?"

"Just wanted to get in touch and say how sorry I was to hear about your injury! but I guess these things happen eh? Still new opportunities and all that, I am ringing because I have just watched your press conference"

"Oh right?" I replied, my levels of confusion rising.. where was this going?

"I think I may have a proposition for you..."

After several minutes on the phone I hung up and turned to look at Amy.

"You know you were saying about wanting that new beginning?"

Natalie Sawyer - "Our main headline today, Ronald Koeman has left his position as Southampton manager to take the vacant managers position at Barcelona. Koeman, 52, who guided Southampton to a Europa League place last season said that this was too good an opportunity to turn down as he returns to the club where he lifted the champions league trophy as a player. He also wished to extend his gratitude to the Southampton fans and hoped that they would understand his decision."

"There has not been any word yet of who will replace Koeman at Southampton but Nigel Pearson appears to be early bookies favourite".

This was all happening so fast. Just over a week ago I was getting ready to start my pre-season with my boyhood club Liverpool, now I'm sat in an office discussing the beginning of my managerial career. Sat across the desk from me was Les Reed, director of football at St Mary's.

"I'm pleased you've agreed to talk to us Rickie" He said, passing a copy of a freshly printed contract to my agent.

"It's my pleasure, I've got so many great memories at Southampton, I'd be stupid not to hear you out"

"Well, the thing is Rickie the clubs fans are starting to get really worried, our success is making us a target for bigger clubs, players and managers alike, and we need somebody to bring that feel good factor back to the club"

"And you think I'm the man to do that?"

"You are a club legend Rickie, the fans would be so excited to see you back and we feel that you deserve a shot in management. We do however have a couple of stipulations"

"Stipulations?" I asked, glancing at my agent.

"Well, we are looking for somebody to make a long term commitment to the club, so we are going to want you to stick around for more than just a season or two"

"Thats more than fine by me, I love it here, what else?"

"We are extremely keen to play our football and do our business in a certain way, you know the drill, you were here for long enough. The Southampton Way is very important to us, we want to play exciting, attacking, possession football and we want to do our business in a way that ensures the long term future of the club. We also want you to make the most of our academy and continue to bring the kids through into the first team"

"That sounds reasonable to me" I glance again at my agent who has finished reading the paperwork. He gives me a tiny nod and a smile. "Shall we talk business?"

Lambert announced as manager

View attachment 238201

Southampton legend Rickie Lambert has today been announced as the Saints new first team manager. Lambert, 32, has signed an initial one year contract and will assume his first team responsibilities immediately. "I'm absolutely buzzing to be back here at St Mary's, its unbelievable, everything has happened so quickly, it just seems right." Lambert said, speaking to our reporter "I cant wait to get to work with the lads and start our pre-season. Its going to be a massive year for the club, trying to consolidate our place at the sharp end of the Premier League whilst starting our very own European journey in the Europa League."

Southampton Director of Football Les Reed said he was 'delighted' that the club had secured their first choice. "Rickie is a very astute man with a lot of history with this club and a lot of passion for this club. He is supremely ambitious and we feel the club is in very safe hands moving forwards".

I lowered myself into my office chair, nursing my painful knee, looking around my new office. This was all so surreal being seated in the managers office that I visited so frequently during my time here, only on the other side of the desk. Where on earth do I begin?

First things first I decided that I needed to lay down a set of principles that I wanted to stick too during my time at the club, but what did I actually want? which direction did I want to take the club down?
  • Firstly I would be doing my absolute best to fulfil the boards request to play attacking football. With such wonderful attacking players at the club like Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic, Jay Rodriguez and Shane Long, the emphasis was going to be on scoring one more than the opposition.
  • Secondly I would not be overspending on big players. I want players at the club who want to be here and are not just here for a quick pay-day.
  • To go along with my second point I am going to be trying to buy young players for the first team. Players with resale value to keep the club in a very safe financial position.
  • Lastly I would be taking a very long look at the academy players and trying to integrate them into the first team as quickly as possible to try and unearth the next star.
Right, good. Glad thats sorted. I suppose the next logical step after that is to take a look at my first team squad.

So that looks to me like a very solid start to a squad. A couple of points to note are Fraser Forster and Florin Gardos' injuries that will see them both out for most of the season. Thankfully Koeman had already sorted out replacements for both with Stekelenburg and Caulker in on a seasons loan. The next step before looking at any transfers is to look at the U21 squad and see if anybody is capable of filling the gaps.

View attachment 238171
Sam Gallagher seems to be an excellent prospect, very much reminding me of myself in my early days but he has been loaned out to MK Dons for the season so we will re-evaluate next season. Ryan Seager again looks like an excellent prospect and I can see a Gallagher/Seager strike partnership being successful in the future. Perhaps he is not quite ready for the first team yet so a loan move might be the right option for him. Jason McCarthy is a young man that I have been very impressed with, he will be moving straight into the first team squad for next season along with Jack Stephens who has been a prospect at Southampton for a while now, this will be his make or break season. A close eye will also be kept on George Mells and Jake Hesketh who have the potential to go all the way but are nowhere near ready for first team competition.

As I mentioned earlier I have taken the decision to play a very attacking game and will be playing with a 4231 tactic to make the most of our attacking midfield threat, perhaps lining up something like this, we will have to see how pre-season goes.

View attachment 238169

So are there any weaknesses in the squad? I have a big call to make on the CB position. Jose Fonte is a nailed on starter and our captain so it was simply a case of who would play next to him. Steven Caulker has had a bad couple of seasons and is only in on loan and Maya Yoshida is the only other established first team CB. Add in the youth prospects of Jack Stephens and Jason McCarthy and will this be enough to see us through the season, especially with the prospect of Europa League football.

We also look slightly weak in Central Midfield. Clasie looks set to pick up right where Schneiderlin left off and Wanyama will be the crucial destroyer in the midfield. While that is a very capable starting pairing I worry about our depth. Steven Davis can offer some experience in midfield but youngster Harrison Reed will have a lot of responsibility on his shoulders if I dont strengthen. James Ward-Prowse can play at centre mid as well but I would prefer he is further up the pitch.

Right wing could be a potential issue. We have lots of players capable of playing there such as Jay Rodriguez, Shane Long, Dusan Tadic, Sadio Mane and Juanmi but all of them are better used in other positions. Perhaps a real specialist is required here to drive us forward?

The striker role is the final piece of the puzzle. If I am planning to play with a target man then Graziano Pelle is the main man. The big Italian striker has been in lethal form over the last few years and is up there with the best of them in terms of goals over the past few seasons. Shane Long's hold up play is fantastic but his size counts against him in terms of being alone up front. Jay Rodriguez is an intriguing option in the lone striker role with size, strength and pace all in his favour. But again will it be enough to get us through the season?

I think I had better have a word with my scouting team.

Former Favourites named in new look Saints coaching team

View attachment 238160

New Southampton Manager Rickie Lambert has moved to install former fan favourite Jason Dodd as his assistant manager at St Mary's. Former U21 Manager Dodd is said to be relishing the challenge of rejoining the Saints.
"To have the chance to come back to the club where I played for my career and reform the partnership with Rickie that we had in the academy, it was just too good to turn down"

Also joining the club in coaching roles are former striker James Beattie and club legend Francis Benali. Beattie was unavailable for comment but Benali said he cherished the opportunity to get back involved with the club he loves. "Southampton is my club, it has always been my club, I am so excited to be back, especially working alongside club legends like Rickie and James and Doddy, there is a real family feel about the club which can only be a good thing for the club, the players and the fans".

A knock on my office door.

"Yeah, come in" I say, leaning back in my chair and looking at the door"

"You asked to see me?" The speaker was Bill Green, chief scout at Southampton Football Club.

"Hi Bill, come on in, have a seat, just wanted to run a few questions past you about the squad"

Bill took a seat opposite my desk and opened the laptop he was carrying. "Sure, fire away"

"Ok, I just wanted to ask you about the current state of the market, I have some reservations mainly about squad depth"

"Well I can tell you that the team is in a really good position, our standing has never been higher, players are genuinely interested in joining us and Europa League football is a big draw as well, I would urge that we get as many experienced players into the club as possible and then supplement it with our youngsters"

"Yeah that sounds about right to me, in which case I have some scouting that I need doing. A centre back, a strong midfielder, a right winger and a tall striker"

"consider it done, I'll get on it right away"

I stood on the edge of the pitch at the Staplewood training complex, my arms folded, watching the players start their pre-season warm up. It had been an emotional morning for me, meeting back up with my old friends from the club, the likes of Jose Fonte, Kelvin Davis and my old strike partner Jay Rodriguez. Overall the morning had gone really well, the lads had settled back in and gotten to work and I was now stood with my Assistant manager Jason Dodd on the touchline.

"Jason, I want to take a closer look at some of the fringe players"

"Alright buddy, I can arrange a friendly for tomorrow if you want? against our youth team?"

"That sounds like it could be ideal, I really want to keep an eye on some of the lads. Harrison Reed, Jack Stephens, Gaston Ramirez, they all have question marks over their heads, I want training updates on all of them"

"Il keep you regularly updated boss, il make the preparations for tomorrow and let you know"

My Phone rings.

"Hi Rickie, Its Bill Green here, we have some progress on one of our scouting assignments"

My heart leapt slightly at the thought of making my first signing as a manager.

"That's great Bill, Who is it?"

"Niklas Stark. Young German midfielder, only 19 but he's been showing huge potential, fit and strong with a great judgement for tackling and marking, he could be the ideal understudy to big Vic Wanyama".

"What sort of price are we talking about here?"

"Well, obviously I havnt made contact with his club, thats not my job, but I reckon if you can get him for less than 5 mil then you should snap him up."

"Ok Bill, Email me over the reports and footage and we can have a look, I'll get hold of Les and set the ball rolling on this one, thanks for letting me know!"

My First Game

The next day came around and all of a sudden I was finding myself needing to select a team for tonights match. As far as I was concerned tonight was all about having a look at some of the fringe players and trying players in different positions. Guys like Graziano Pelle and Dusan Tadic are nailed on to be in the team so this was just a chance to see what other people could bring to the table.

View attachment 238053

The line up looked like this, with Gazzaniga getting a shot in goal to cement his place as number two behind Stekelenburg.

Matt Targett will be pushing Ryan Bertrand hard this season for his starting place so he gets a chance to shine tonight along with Jack Stephens who partners Jose Fonte in the middle of defence.

Harrison Reed starts in the middle of the park just behind Gaston Ramirez who's Southampton career hangs by a thread. Victor Wanyama will offer some experience and solidity behind the two of them.

Juanmi gets a shot on the left wing, looking to help his own cause as he is in direct competition with Sadio Mane for that place and James Ward-Prowse starts on the right to see if he could be a possible fixture for that problem area.

On my very first day I claimed to be intrigued at what Jay Rodriguez could do up front in that lone striker role and tonight he gets the chance to prove himself after the best part of a year out with injury.

I prowled the touchline nervously throughout the match, but I shouldnt have worried. The lads put in an inspired performance and we ran out comfortable winners!

SOUTHAMPTON 6 - 1 SOUTHAMPTON U21's

An excellent evenings work, with a lot of the new boys really impressing! James Ward-Prowse looked like he had been playing right wing all of his life and Harry Reed looked cool as you like in the middle of the park. Jack Stephens was perhaps the biggest surprise, netting himself a 9.0 rating and creating an assist for Juanmi's first goal.

View attachment 238049
Here you can see the player ratings for the match and I can immediately tell I'm going to be in for a selection headache this season. Steven Davis notched two good assists off the bench and Graziano Pelle instantly looked more comfortable up front than Rodriguez.

Man of the match

JUANMI

View attachment 238048

Juanmi scooped the man of the match award for his two goals, an assist and a 9.4 rating for his match. A very promising start to a young career!!

I walked into the Changing room after the match, clapping my hands.

"Lads that was fantastic!" I cheered at them, earning a thunderous round of applause. "If we play like that when it really matters then we are going to have absolutely no problems at all! I know its only the first game of pre-season, and I know your only playing against the reserves, but well done!"

Stark signs for Saints

View attachment 238042
New Southampton manager Rickie Lambert has made his first signing for the club with the addition of German U21 midfielder Niklas Stark. Stark, 19, has agreed a deal to move to Southampton from his former club F.C. Nurnberg for a fee in the region of £4.5 million. Stark has represented Germany U21's on 7 occasions, scoring 3 goals and is thought of as one of the brightest German prospects around.

"Niklas is a fantastic capture for the club, the fact that we can draw in young players with a reputation such as his shows just how far this club has come" Said Saints manager Rickie Lambert. "I feel that this is the perfect place for him to develop his game and our fans should be very excited, he is a wonderful talent"

"Of course, moving to a big club like Southampton is something you dream about as a child" Stark said on his move to St Marys Stadium. "I cant wait to meet up with my new team mates and get stuck in, to play in the English Premier League is what every footballer wants to do".

Young Saints farmed out

Five Southampton youth prospects have today been loaned out to other clubs in an attempt to gain first team experience. Jake Hesketh, George Mells, Josh Sims, Ryan Seager and Jason McCarthy have all been loaned to clubs in the football league. "This is a really important part of their development at the club" Said Southamptons Director of football Les Reed. "They are at a crucial stage where they need to be playing regular first team football to aid their development. We will be keeping a close eye on them while they are gone. They are still very much in the first team picture for next season".

All of the above players were part of the Southampton Under 21 team that lifted the U21 Premier League cup last season.
