Road to Glory : The Manager

Great work making the playoffs, incredibly tight though! Tough luck in the FA Cup, but you lost to the best team in the world so no shame in that ;)

Well done on the play offs! Fingers crossed on a favourable draw if there is one!

It's 3v6 and 4v5, so we got Birmingham. Tough one.

It was stupidly tight, we shouldn't have made it so tough on ourselves but the 2 big wins means we have a bit of form and goal scoring power. There was no way we would be upsetting Liverpool, just couldn't happen - gulf in class and our form around the tie. Still, Wembley and money!

James McKenzie: A Profile

16443ed10022b4558a07090ff031f30d.png

Sky Sports wanted to find out who James McKenzie was, the man who came from Scotland, arrived in England via South Africa and Ireland and now is setting up to take Crewe Alexandra to the League One play offs.

James McKenzie, 34, was born in Peterhead, Scotland and immediately fell in love with football. However, a lack of love for the booming fish trade lead to his divorced Mum and his Aunt going off to France for half a year, taking young James McKenzie with them. Upon returning, he was picked up by the Aberdeen Developmental squad until at 14 they said he didn't have the physical ability, or technical assets, to make it in the game.

McKenzie was then on the books at Peterhead's youth side before a car incident lead to him being released from his youth deal aged 17. McKenzie has never been quiet about the incident which left him gutting fish for a living before he had enough and worked his way back into football - earning peanuts to coach the Peterhead youth side.

It was from here where things started to go in the right direction. The Scottish Football Association, particularly those from the SFA North Region, noted his ability and brought him up to speed with coaching courses - he from there would work particularly close with Aberdeen's blossoming 15's and 17's teams. He'd work work shops across Scotland too before James McKenzie looked elsewhere.

After a series of managerial sackings in South Africa, James McKenzie somehow found himself on the other side of a Skype Call with Santos FC - not THE Santos FC - but a South African second tier Santos FC. He was offered the job and the man with no Professional or South African background was now at a professional club in South Africa, in a time where the country was in ruins.

Santos FC was a club that was in a financial mess with no real hopes of promotion but McKenzie was determined and promotion could have fixed a few cash flow problems.

After a hard-fought season with the likes of Milano United, Baroka FC and Black Leopards - Santos FC found themselves struggling through a Promotion Mini League where a surprise 1-0 win over Baroka FC from a down and out Black Leopards lead to Santos needing 3 points against Baroka FC to make it to the top tier.

22dc04ff60ae78806a22fbe877aef9c2.png

From here, Santos FC with the likes of Broderick Burds and Modibo Sidibe had to save themselves from relegation. In a quiet year that started off very well, Santos were safe. No Relegation, mid table safety, and a healthy bank balance.

James McKenzie let his contract run to a close, a risky move, with no jobs lined up and had only been on a small deal at Santos FC meaning there was no real cash to live on.

He failed to get a job in that Summer before eventually in November, Shamrock Rovers received an email inquiring about the job. Pat Fenlon had been sacked after a tragic season left The Hoops without European football, no trophies and financial ruin. 'Mr Scotland' was brought in during November, meaning he had 4 months before the season started to fix up a few things. Glenn Agus was one of the big signings for the club, the youngster came in from Tottenham and was a real hard hitter in Ireland.

From the off, it was clear Shamrock Rovers had a lot to deal with. There was the likes of a strong Dundalk side, Sligo Rovers and the rest all contending for the top spot and Champions League football. Shamrock Rovers looked dead and buried on a number of occasions but a tragic run of form from Dundalk at the seasons end allowed Shamrock Rovers to actually topple them on the final day. Dundalk had beat McKenzie's Shamrock Rovers in his first cup final earlier in the season, before knocking them out early in a Senior Challenge Cup round. McKenzie did also manage a League Cup win with that club.

James McKenzie then allowed his 1 year deal in Ireland to draw to a close too, Crewe beckoned and his move to England's football league was official. They were 15 games in, out of the League Cup and JPT but still in for a shout at the Play Offs. The whole season was to be played, and it was certainly played. Rocky and inconsistent form left Crewe fighting for a top 6 on the final day. Weeks after playing at Wembley against Liverpool and months after thinking a top 2 was possible.

Can James McKenzie continue his meteoric rise through football with another promotion? Another piece of the jigsaw? Birmingham will be taking them on Live on Sky Sports 2, this Saturday at 1230.

There was a lot of media buildup to the Play-Off Semi Finals anyway, nevermind a boardroom fallout. I don't know the finer details of it. But Roche had ended up ordering Leishman to leave the Stadium. I had tried to speak to Roche, who had been happy-go-larry recently but he refused to say anything and I haven't seen either of them around the club in a few days.

Emma, a buddy from PR, said that she had a quick word with Roche, and he opened up. Leishman suggested, promotion or not, that I could be replaced by a top manager who could do wonders for the club. Roche disagree'd and Leishman continued to push his buttons.

Scary, but thankfully Roche is in a better place than he once was earlier this season.

Here we go then, Birmingham City at home. We had to be strong, I wanted a goal lead going to their place but would take a draw - just no losses. They were strong and it was a little scary, I wanted another game at Wembley. I wanted promotion.

I decided to change our ways tactically. Birmingham had 5 at the back and I was worried this'd really leave Davies and the likes of Sinclair and Forde/Fosu completely isolate, so went for a 4-4-1-1 with Colkett playing a vital role in behind Davies, with Sinclair and Forde having to really support.

Birmingham weren't great away, but we weren't too good at home. They finished 15 points clear of us and missed out on automatic promotion by 1 point.

This is it then, the League One Play-Offs. Imagine the Championship?

Quiet opening half, half chances. Cagey.

Birmingham were struggling to get going, until Forsyth was played through and he finished - offside. Phew!

Time was ticking and a Lawrence effort from range went wide and the game drew to a close. 0-0. I'll take it, was a little cagey and we should have taken some chances.

Now we traveled to Birmingham for the second leg. It was 0-0 and we just had to do more of the same and I am sure we'd grab the important goals.

We went with a similar line-up and formation. Careful, concise. Literally praying to the football Gods that we can do something here.

The first half drew to a close, we were 1-0 down after a Cole header. He got in front of Griffin and smashed it home with a bullet of a header. We did have a chance of our own, but Lawrence was called offside moments after a lovely finish passed the keeper.

2 minutes into the second half and Davies works Cabellero twice.. Sinclair? NO!? Triple save by the man in between the Birmingham sticks! Don't even believe it.

Davieeeees! A long ball down the line from Baillie, finds Forde who cuts inside passed his man, knocks it passed the keeper to Davies! 1-1!

Oh no Sinclair, don't lose the ball there!? You had options.. That's a long ball from Reilly, it finds Boadu.. Myhill has to go big here. What a save! Corner kick, 2 minutes to go..

Careful passing on the edge from Birmingham, Reilly hits one - just over! Heart can't take this..

End of the 90.

Extra time awaits, scary and nervy!

Oh no, what a mistake from Tootle, an awful touch see's Morsy through... Oh what a miss. Got let off there.

"Concentrate lads!"

Birmingham push again, Cole has space on the edge.. Oh and he slices it. Phew. Again, let off.

Penalties.

Pwhoa. Nerves, man.

"Hi James, seem to be missing a few interviews with Sky and that. Everything all good?" the voice was of Eric, my agent and sometimes PR guy.

"Yeah, I'm good man. Had some bad family news too, not just the stuff with Crewe." I said back down the phone. Lying on my bed.

"Well, I did a little looking around. And you know how once upon a time you were interested in that move to Rangers? They want us to travel up tomorrow for a job interview."

1a146d29af0ff1d5664fca5396df7037.png

"What? Really? That's a huge job. That's Glasgow F'n Rangers. Take it they lost again this weekend?"
I said back, jumping to my feet and galloped towards my laptop. B-B-C S-p-o-r-t was jabbed into the site. They had lost in the play offs again, they were setting up for their 4th year in the Championship after 3 years of Play Off heartache.

"Lets go? Sure. What does Roche say?" I added.

"He's not happy, and quite frankly not delighted at the fact you want to go to the Scottish Championship. You are leaving behind something special if you try and pursue it. But there's nothing he can do about you taking a holiday back home - and if you bump into the Rangers board then whoops!"

So, I was away on a train to Glasgow. To Ibrox.

Gutted about the playoffs mate! Time for the start of a Scottish revolution though?

"Hi James, you didn't get the job. Grant Murray. Joke isn't it? Stay at Crewe for a season, get promotion?" the words hurt, Eric was down too but oh well. I am happy with Crewe. One more year, get promoted then I can work with things. I have to completely change my staff out and do a lot of work with the players but it is possible.

All released.

And we lost out to Davies, we offered him more money but he decided he wanted something new.

His time in England so far hasn't been anything special, confident he can do us a job though.

Also think we need a new marketing team to get us some more cash.

It was time for the awards night, first time with all the players since the seasons end and we got to really look on to next season. A few weren't happy I had discussed a move to Rangers but were generally content.

1857fd8635dbfa99e2c102fa01931ceb.png

Craig Davies, one of the few not at the evening, as he sets up for his move to Barnsley. He grabbed 31 goals in 47 starts, but around 53 games. Inconsistent - could have hit 40! Good player though, will be a big miss.

And then the best 11 wasn't a huge shocker either. It was the team I usually played, Myhill ended up beating Garratt to the #1 shirt late on though.

We also got a look at what the bookies thought of this next season.

I'll take it, would like a top 2 but top 6 will do.

Would have loved a holiday but had to completely redo some of our staff and sort out a lot of player related issues. Ben Garratt was linked with moves to the Premier League while there was some deadwood to remove from the club. As well as replacing Davies, Sinclair and Colkett. Who either left with contract issues or loan deals.

Now obviously we don't have millions to spend, but things had to be done in order to push for promotion. We need a Sinclair and I haven't quite found one, but it is the first of July and this is what has been done so far on the playing staff side.

Tom Hateley. The son of Rangers legend, Mark Hateley joins for £190,000 from Brentford. He will really be Colkett's replacement as he returns to Leicester, playing just in front of the back four. Very solid little player, reckon he can do a lot for us and honestly feel he is already Championship quality.

0b158265fda842dd45867be987aa4b59.png

While we couldn't tie down a deal for Leicester's Colkett, we did entice Tom Lawrence back to the club after a loan spell permanently. He played 29 times in the league, while overall he started 17, and came on off the bench another 17 times throughout the season. Definite dangerman, and can worry teams with his ability in front of goal. Will be in and around the first team.

9df7158d0b75e3f00172d2375530871f.png

Scottish man Tony Watt is up next, he's a presence up top and we need him to show that. We have to fill the gap of 31 goals. Need him to do it.

11416a1fba2cd867d2d9817d40539711.png

On the out, Davies left on a free. My bad, quite a tough negotiator these days! He wanted Barnley, no bother.

Ben Garratt, the young keeper, had Arsenal and Tottenham after him and we took £650,000 to see him elsewhere. It's a shame, but unless it's a Joe Hart or Manuel Neuer they are replaceable. Marc Pugh also finally left along with a few back ups.

Still in for a new Scott Sinclair, possibly a top, top central defender and a few decent squad players.

"Hallo, bossman. I was watching the Crewe newspaper today. Vander Vaart? You manage Vander Vaart!?"
Monday's voice bellowed down the phone. Nice surprise, I guess.

"Hello, Monde! I always told you not to pay attention to the press. I have spoken to Rafael 'Van Der Vaart' about a move here, he wants to manage and play. So I can give him our 18s Squad and have him play if necessary. He's not what he once was. St Mirren last year and the second tier of Dutch football before that. Great experience though, yes." I said back, laughing at Monde and his excitement.

"But bossman! Theees is Raf - a - el Van Deeer Vaaaart! Product of Ajax, Real a Madrid, Tottenham. What hasn't the great man experienced, ey? You ever managed a Wooorld Cup finalist? A Real Madrid player?!" Monde shouted back with emphasis on everything. I mean he was right, Rafael Van Der Vaart was a special talent and I was about to be the man's manager and boss. He was older than me, and had played in El Classico's, World Cups - the 2010 final had him featuring for Godsakes. The man was special.

"Yeah, I know. He hasn't signed yet. But if he does I'll let you know." I went to hang up, I was late for training and had a meeting with Roche about signing a keeper shortly.

"Hey, take me to Crewe. No?" he pleaded.

"What? Monde, the option to follow me came to an end a while back now buddy. I have just restructured everything here. I can't hire anyone now. Roche will murder me! Come over and meet the players on a wee holiday if you want?"
No response. He hung up! I swear he's a woman with his mood swings!

Changing

With Rafael Van Der Vaart contemplating joining Crewe I decided we would force Roche into fixing our pitch so we could get a little more technical. We could become something special on that pitch!

a1d64f41e5e50352af3480b9d562e3b9.png

I also continued to scout out potential youth prospects that could turn into something decent for the club. While I had to pay almost £350,000 in compensation over the next few years, I did pick out this youngster from Northern Ireland. My assistant, who is from the South, picked him out while watching a Youth Friendly between the two nations. I trust his judgement. Why not?

Few decent youngsters bouncing about, and I have this dying urge now to show the World my routes of developing kids into something. Here's the main few that I want to work into the side. Includes Dempster of course.

May it be quickly noted Roche isn't Crewe's chairman - it's John Bowler, my bad! But for stories sake his name will remain Roche!

What do van der vaarts coaching stats look like? Could be a great piece of business on both fronts perhaps?
