Ronaldo with Barcelona team would be better than Messi. Messi has got behind him Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro, Villa,...

Except that Ronaldo wouldn't do well with the Barca team. He's way too selfish (interpret this as you will). He takes too many shots and has to be the focal point of the offense (has been the best player by far on both teams he's played at). I don't think he could get used to simply being a cog in the Barca machine, where you pass first and shoot second. Messi is though. he's a better team player, and fits in perfectly with the Barca system (which of course is because he's one of their youth products, but still).

Not quite. I've seen people call Scholes the best in the world before (not least Zinedine Zidane), and Giggs was never far off.

If you want other examples, I could say Paolo Maldini, Jack Charlton, Jimmy Armfield, Franco Baresi, Iker Casillas, Xavi Hernandez, Lev Yashin... the list of players who have proved themself on only one domestic stage is near endless, yet would you deny that in their position each was the best in the world at the time?

Paolo Maldini - Not one of the best ever IMO but an excellent player. Excellent for Milan AND Italy.

Don't know Jimmy Armfield. JC won a World Cup. Successful at International level.

Baresi, succesful at International level. Casillas the same. Xavi the same. Lev Yashin was a goalkeeper I think, and I don't know much about him so can't comment.

They've all been successful at international level along with being amazing for clubs.
Messi has been successful for Barcelona.

Ronaldo for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Portugal to an extent (Euro 04 finals, scoring in 2 WC's and 2 EC's).

As I stated in my other post, Messi has been good for the national team, especially considering the circumstances. The whole "Messi sucks for Argentina" thing is really an oversimplification and almost always claimed by people who watch Argentina play maybe once or twice between World Cups. Anyways, Messi was very good at this World Cup, his role wasn't to score goals as I stated before.

Henry was not good for the national team, and other than a good season and a half at Barca before he lost his spot to Pedro, was only good for Arsenal. Does that mean he wasn't a good player?

Anyways, national team success often times isn't considered very important in determining the worth of a player, people look to his club career much more than anything.

Also, was very surprised a few posts back when you said Scholes and Giggs weren't some of the best of all time...many ManU fans claim they are, I've seen both of them called the greatest player of all time.

Messi by an absolute country mile. Ronaldo is nowhere NEAR Messi standard.

How on earth was Henry not good for the national side? He's their top goalscorer of all time and has over 120 caps!?

I don't consider Giggs as one of the best of all time, maybe in the Premier League but not in the World. Scholes is a possibilty for World IMO.

Messi isn't as good for the Argies as he is for Barca. Ronaldo isn't as good for Portugal as he is for Real. But Ronaldo is just as good if not better for Real as he was for United. That's the difference. He kept up his insane form and world class ability immediately after transferring for a World Record fee and broke records in his first season in a new league.

Messi has never been unsettled as he's been there since he was 12. He's too comfortable. Until he moves away from his comfort zone, to me he won't be the best.

Can Messi score over 35 goals a season? RONALDO!

He has this season, last season and the season before that. In fact, he's already beaten Ronaldo's 42 with 47 last year. Also, if we want to talk assists, he has 60 for the last three and a half years, nearly double Ronaldo's tally of 33.

Seriously, if we want to talk pure statistics, there's only one winner.

people blast footballer's for having no loyalty in football. Messi is one of the most loyal, and because of this you say he can't be labelled the best in the world.

He doesn't have to prove anything to anyone. If you were playing for the best team in the world would you move to Stoke City, just to show how good you were, no.

Only way I can see Messi as better than Ronaldo is if he plays in the Prem, but since that won't happen (As stated by Messi) then Ronaldo, though a mercenary, is better in adaptability and as a competitive footballah.

That was my point...

Cheeky edit from prior posting

lol, dont forget that it was his FIRST season in real and that he was injured for some games ^^)

If he can get 27 assists in "some" games, then he is truly the best!

Let's be honest here. Wether you like it or not, Messi is the better player. And above all things, he is much more of a team player than Ronaldo will ever be. I'm not saying Ronaldo is a bad player, he's number 2 FFS, but Messi... Messi plays in his own league.

C. Ronaldo hasn't got the footballing brain to be better than Messi, C. Ronaldo is a bag of party tricks, like Ronaldinho was.. But as good as Ronaldinho was, someone like Zidane was better.. As he had the footballing brain to match his ability.. something C. Ronaldo lacks.

I have been able to get into C.Ronaldo's brain.. Here is what I found inside.

££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££

im not saying messi is rubbish, but he can stay in spain all he likes but one day he has to come to the premierleague same with the likes of david villa, david silva, kaka and many others.

many great players have failed in the english league so with him moving to england and prove himself there will just make him the greatest of the all hope he succeeds in england if he does tho.

WTF are you on mate.......I could list 100 players who are/were the best in the world....and they did'nt come to play in England.

I've had my head in my hands reading the past couple of pages of this thread.

Ermmm, yes.

Indeed. If you talk statistics, there is only one winner and that´s Messi. So far this season, CR7 has 34 goals vs Messi 40 goals. Not only that, but Messi has more assists than him. Actually, if you really want to check it, this Season Messi has more assists than Xavi. So, not only does he score a lot, but also assists. E.g. Villa´s 2 goals against Real Madrid thanks to his passes.
