Reason

Decided to start a Brighton save after my success with them in FM13. After 6 seasons I went from a mid-table Championship side to Premier League winners. I won the League cup 4 times, reached Euro Cup semi-finals, FA Cup semi-finals and Champions League semi-finals (in first attempt); as well as having over 80% of the team being British. Hopefully I can achieve further success in this years version.

Starting with a default database, with the editor changes being the creation of a version of myself with high potential; which I do in every FM save. Also Callum Comyn-Platt and Thando Dladla from my FM13 story were created. Liam Bridcutt, Lewis Dunk, Jake Forster-Caskey and Rohan Ince have been slightly upgraded. Time to fly!

Hopefully Ulloa can bang in the goals for us.

Tactics

Decided to go for an attacking possession tactic considering the quality of the players we have. So hopefully we can score a lot and dominate teams on our way to the Premier League!

Pre-season
Bath 0 v 7 Brighton
Vise 0 v 5 Brighton
Tubize 0 v 8 Brighton
Scunthorpe 0 v 1 Brighton
Watford+v+Brighton+Hove+Albion+FA+Cup+4th+cS0gkw5NDWYl.jpg

A good unbeaten pre-season with clean sheets in all games. Ready for the start of the season!

Transfers
In:
Carles Planas (575k)
Samba Diakite (1.4m)
Tony Sanabria (875k)
David Bentley (free)
Sebastia Sastre (300k)

Out:
Jake Forster-Caskey (loan)
Adam Chicksen (loan)
Rohan Ince (loan)
Andrea Orlandi (1.7m)
Brennan Dickenson (loan)

Needed Planas with only Ward on loan and Chicksen going on loan to another club. Needed a ball winning midfielder and at 1.4m Diakite was a great buy. Sanabria is another Barcelona player I brought in who will provide competition for our strikers and is one for the future. Was disappointed to sell Orlandi but we have a lot of quality attacking midfielders and 1.7m was a lot of money! David Bentley was signed right at the end of the window and will add some quality and competition to the wide areas. Sastre was signed by the youth manager.

Season Aims:
Promotion
Average over 60 percent possession over the season
Fifth round of one of the cups
Score over 100 goals

This has been a mixed month for us. After a good start in the league we have lost two home games in a row so hopefully we can approve. At least our league cup progress is going well and we have got a home tie against Blackburn in the next round. Lopez and West have shown this month.

Player of the month
Matthew West ? no bias here! The young player of month award says it all. 5 assists and 1 goal is a good start.

Summary
A good month for us apart from the narrow loss to Ipswich. Got four points from the first two games when I wasn't really expecting any! Followed by an efficient performance against Bolton and a good win against the team currently top of the Championship in the League Cup. The only disappointment was the match against Ipswich and we got completely dominated but only narrowly lost.

Summary
A decent month for us which leaves us in fourth place. Our first three games we played very well and Buckley and Ulloa were on fire for us! Watford was one of those you dominate but you cannot seem to score! Unfortunately for us we are out of the league cup. We gave everything against a dominate Chelsea side who could only beat us through an injury time winner through Schurrle. Bruno is also out for four months.

Wigan 0 v 2 Brighton (L)
Greer, Dunk

Bournemouth 0 v 6 Brighton (L)
Ulloa (3), Crofts (2), Diakite

Summary
A good unbeaten month for us with a couple of clean sheets. Against Doncaster and Wigan we controlled both games and also ended Wigan's 3 match unbeaten run. I would normally be pleased with a draw against table toppers Blackburn but we let a 2 goal led slip. Our performance against Bournemouth was unbelievable and Ulloa and Crofts were on fire! Now fourth with the sides ahead of us all on 33 points (we're on 31 points).

Summary
A horrible month for us with the only shining light being the thrashing of Blackpool. We just managed to edge Barnsley with a late strike from Ward. In the other games we were poor; drawing with bottom placed Leicester, having 22 shots (13 on target) against Middlesbrough, a poor display against Huddersfield and getting thrashed by Charlton. Hopefully the Blackpool game is the start of a winning streak. 5 to 6 first team players are also injured!

January Summary
9 goal thriller in seaside derby
Transfers ins and outs
FA Cup begins

Transfers
In:
Josh Meekings (875k)
Marc Albrighton (loan)
Khalid Tadmine (375k)

Out:
Peter Brezovan (8.75k)
Keith Andrews (loan terminated)
Kemy Agustien (1.3m)

Meekings is a young player with a lot of potential and initially came in as a replacement for Upson, who wanted to leave, but we couldn?t find a club who wanted to sign him. Albrighton was signed to add more depth. Brezovan was our third choice keeper and wanted to lean. Andrews and Agustien didn?t get much game time so terminated Andrews loan and sold Agustien for a good profit. Tadmine was signed by our head of youth. A lot of youngsters also went on loan.

Brighton 5 v 4 Bournemouth (L)
Buckley (2), Lopez, Ulloa, Greer

Brighton 3 v 1 Watford (FAC)
El-Abd, Mackail-Smith (2)

Brighton 1 v 1 Birmingham (L)
Ulloa

Derby 1 v 2 Brighton (L)
Mackail-Smith (2)

Leicester 1 v 0 Brighton (FAC)

Burnley 4 v 1 Brighton (L)
Ulloa

Summary
A mixed month for us. We started well with victory against Bournemouth and Watford, in the cup. The Bournemouth game was quite stressful! We scored then they scored but in the end we managed to score more. We get a good victory in the FA Cup but were knock out by Leicester. We managed to beat Derby with ten men (Diakite sent off) which was good considering they were fifth. But we were torn to shreds by Burnley.

Can Brighton end losing run?
West and Bruno out for 5 weeks

Brighton 2 v 1 Doncaster (L)
West, Lopez

Blackburn 1 v 3 Brighton (L)
Ulloa, Rhodes (OG), Lopez

Brighton 2 v 0 Wigan (L)

Summary
After a poor start to the month we managed to pick ourselves up and ended up in third. In both the Watford and Leeds games we played very poorly and it didn?t help that poor penalty decisions went against us. The results against Blackburn and Wigan show we have enough quality to get to the automatic places.

Summary
Another great month for us which keeps us in contention for the automatic places. We got two good wins in our first two games and a good draw against a decent QPR side. The Bolton match we had both Dunk and Planas sent off so can?t really complain about a flattering scoreline. I think the two victories against Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday could be the catalyst for us going up. Lopez scored in the 92nd minute to win against Ipswich and the goals in the Sheffield Wednesday came in the 86th and 89th minute. The final game shows our goalscoring variety with West and Buckley contributing.

What a month for us, securing all six wins and the Championship title with a game to spare! All the games everyone played well and we got the results we deserved. Even the Blackpool game, who were 24th, we never gave up and were rewarded with a last minute goal from Crofts. The results mean we will be flying into the top flight!

Season Summary
It was a great first season in charge of Brighton as we finished top of the Championship and head into the Premier League. There were times when I thought we were not going to make it but after a great run of form in the last few months we made it. No successful cup run as we were knocked out of the cups quite early by Chelsea (League Cup) and Leicester (FA Cup). But hopefully next year we will have a good cup run.

Along with us, Blackburn and QPR (play-offs) got promoted with Aston Villa, West Ham and Hull coming down into the Championship. Chelsea won the Premier League, Reading beat Man Utd 2-0 in the League Cup and Fulham beat Liverpool 3-1 in the FA Cup.

Around Europe: PSG, FC Bayern, Feyenoord, Juventus, Benfica and Barcelona won their leagues. Dortmund beat PSV 1-0 in the Euro Cup and in the Champions League FC Bayern just about beat PSG in a penalty shootout; after a 0-0 draw.

Brighton soaring into the top flight
*Warning may contain bird puns.

On the seaside coast, it is a mementos day as Brighton celebrate lifting the Championship trophy and rising into the Premier League for the first time.

After the surprise sacking of Oscar Garcia, barely a few months into his job, the Seagulls decided to recruit internally with youth coach Matt West being promoted to head coach. It was a decision which paid dividends. West got Brighton playing some fine, exhilarating, attacking play which has been compared to Man City form this season. Brighton, at times, have been able to peck down the opposition's defences and pick off teams; as illustrated in the Bournemouth and Wigan game.

However, there have also been criticism of the way West gets his team to play. Brighton were one of the highest teams in terms of fouls and cards. But were the highest teams in terms of interceptions made. Although West stated 'I prefer my players to get stuck in and give everything. I would rather the players commit fouls and receive cards as long as they are giving 100%. Plus a lot of the goals we scored involved us winning the ball back, quickly, near the opposition defence. So I've got no complaints!'

This season Brighton have favoured an attacking 4-2-3-1 tactic. They have relied on the winning the ball quickly and launching devastating fast pace attacks on teams. However, Brighton have not relied all on attack. The two holding midfielders played an essential part with one winning the ball back and the other starting the attack. There is also the solidity in the back four which Brighton can rely on when they attack. There is importance with the full backs, as the inside forwards bomb forward into the box, it gives Brighton width and means the team are not one dimensional.

Looking at the players, West favoured players who fitted into the tactics rather than the quality. The usual front four of Ulloa, Buckley, West and Lopez can destroy teams. All four players reached double figures in terms of assists and goals. The front four were very effective in moving around, finding each other with passes and their link-up play was fantastic at times. In certain spells the players would just float through games with opposition finding it difficult to get to them. If one player was having an off-day the other players would be on form and Brighton didn't have to worry about where the goals were coming from. With the step up in leagues there are question marks over West will favour this front four or look in the transfer market for better players. If they can match the form in the Championship they should have no problem staying up.

A key reason the attacking four were so good was because of the support they received from the two defensive midfielders. Diakite was a steel at 1.6m and probably West's best signing. He would win the ball back, claw down the opposition players so Brighton could start the attack. His importance was illustrated in January when he was out with injuries and suspensions and the team had a poor run of form. And his form in April was one of the reasons Brighton had that unbeaten run.

There are issues surrounding Diakite as he can often be quite reckless as evident by the red cards and issues about whether Brighton can cope without him. Without Diakite Brighton have tried Andrew Crofts, Rohan Ince, Liam Bridcutt and Keith Andrews but none of them have been quite as effective in that role. West might have to dip his pocket into the transfer market to sign a quality back-up.

Alongside Diakite, was the effective Liam Bridcutt. Bridcutt has been described by Brighton fans as the 'Scottish Xavi'. He was one of the highest players in terms of chances created and passes completed. West described him as having 'a bird's eyes view of the pitch. He can somehow make an impossible pass.'

There was another important element which made Bridcutt's game so important. He was highest player, in the Championship, in terms of distance travelled over 90 minutes. He would support the front four as well as provide defensive qualities.

If you look at the defence, Gordon Greer was immense for Brighton with his leadership skills and defensive qualities. Alongside Greer: Dunk, El-Abd and Meekings would play. There will be issues with who West plays alongside Greer in the Premier League. If Brighton want to sustain a place in the league and not concede many goals they will need a solid backbone and have a consistent partnership.

At full-back both Planas and Bruno were excellent. Planas was another great signing by West and has kept Stephen Ward out of the side for most of the season. With Stephen Ward returning to Wolves and the young Adam Chicksen probably not ready for the step up, West will need a quality attacking left back.

There are also concerns with the right back position with Bruno over 30 and has picked up quite a few injuries this season. Calderon is also set to leave at the end of the season. Brighton have been heavily linked with a move for young Sam Byram. We will see how this moves pans out over the summer.

All the players have played their part in a dominant Championship win so it will be interesting to see who West will sign in the summer. Brighton have already picked up Jesse Lingard and a number of foreign youngsters which suggests Brighton will be hoping to sustain a Premier League place for the long term. We will have to wait and see how Brighton and fellow new boys, Blackburn and QPR, do in the Premier League.

A lot of names come into the squad. Lingard, Vos, Howen, Hart and Garcia were all signed for the future. Ince comes in to provide creativity on the wings. Brought in Sam Byram with Calderon leaving and will be one for the future. Gareth Barry is back here and will provide experience and competition with Diakite. Gignac is a top quality striker and will reduce the scoring burden of Ulloa. Mancienne, Jorginho and Robinson were brought in to provide depth. A number of players have gone out on loan and a couple of first teamers left but our squad is much stronger this year.

Pre-season
Cheltenham 0 v 4 Brighton
Coventry 2 v 4 Brighton
Brentford 0 v 3 Brighton
Sassuolo 0 v 1 Brighton

A good preseason, winning all our matches and the signings have blended in well. Updated my tactics slightly. Will play possession football against the weaker teams but also play fast, counter attacking football against the stronger teams in the league.

Not get relegated
Reach the Quarter finals of one of the cups
Play young players
