INTERVIEW WITH PEDRO CASTRO
Yesterday, Pedro Castro gave an interview to the tvi24 journalists of the programme "Mais Futebol" [= More Football]. He talked about his first days at Benfica, his football choices and his thoughts and wishes for the next season.
TVI- Good Night Pedro Castro, thank you for being here with us.
Castro- Good Night, it is my pleasure.
T- How did Rui Costa found you to this job, and why did he decided to sign you instead of other possible managers, such as Camacho and Giovanni?
C- I can only answer to the first question, as the only one who knows why Rui Costa chose me is Rui Costa himself. We met some years ago, in a supporters dinner. We were talking about Koeman's work, as he was the manager at that time, and then I said I had a level II training coach. We exchanged phone numbers, but not because of that. My life continued, during those 4 years I continued doing my job, which was writing newspaper articles about football and going to some TV programmes about it, and then in May, when Quique Flores was fired, Rui called me asking if I was available. And I said I was, but then the chairman LF Vieira chose Jesus to the job, and I respect that, as he had already given evidence of his abilities. But then we all know the story. He said he would accept an offer from Porto and then Vieira gave me a chance.
T- In your first press conference you said you would dismiss any players that didn't fit your tactic and team model, whoever thay were, and proved that selling Nuno Gomes, Mantorras and Carlos Martins. Now, you have built a new team. Do't you think that will create instability and will have consequences in the players' exhibitions?
C- I don't think it will, I know it will. But I never said I would win a trophy this season, and it is highly possible that we don't, even giving our best in every game. However, in the next season and if we don't win anything until then, I resign. Benfica is coming from many seasons of constant managerial changes, and needs stability. LF Vieira can either give me the time I need and take the profits in the future or fire me for saying this and continue without winning anything for the next years. This squad is capable of winning an European title in the next 4 years, but only if there aren't changes in the management, as any other coach may think they won't and dismiss many players who might be world-class in some time.
T- You are a known Benfica associate, with more than 25 years being a member. What do you think about your rivals, Sporting and Porto?
C- Sporting is a formation team, and gave birth to players we all know, such as Ronaldo, Nani, Figo or even Simao Sabrosa. However, they have some inferiority complexes. They are the team with less national titles (18), and they don't have any European Champions Cup in their museum. In the last season, in the first time they passed through the UCL group stage since 2002, they took 12-1 by Bayern. And I say they have those complexes as they are always criticising Benfica and Porto, getting excuses for our success. And that's why I can't stand with them. The team and staff have all the respect they deserve but I won't lie and say I like Sporting more than Porto, which is a winning team, has always showed that and, besides their refereeing issues we all know, they have had the best team in the past few years, and shown good deals and achievements.
T- Which team do you most admire in the world?
C- That is easy. Benfica
T- And why?
C- We look to the club's history and see a golden past, a silver present, and I'm working on a platinum future. Besides, it's the team with the best supporters in the world, and that gives us strenght and motivation playing at Estadio da Luz. And, last but not the least, the team has an worldwide reputation, with supporters in America, Asia, Africa and Oceania... We are a portuguese club but we belong to the world. Even better: We are the world.
T- Thank you Pedro, that's all for today, we hope to see you again.
C- Again, it was my pleasure. You will.
T- Thank you. And that was all for tonight with Pedro Castro. We're back tomorrow with our commentators and analysts. See ya!

I promise this isn't an excuse and the beggining of the end of the story, as it is doing well. As soon as I return and re-organize the laptop I will immediatly update September and possibly October.
