Messi will probably get it but I voted for Sneijder because he was the key player in winning the treble with Inter, and also had a great world cup.

Everyone is also forgetting Luis Suarez.

49 goals for Ajax plus assists and got 2 goals in the World Cup helping his team to the Semi's. He's blatently been overlooked because of his handball.

You sound like you think he's overrated! He scored nearly 50 goals and set up about 15 last season, there's a reason why people say he's the best in the world...
Because he blatantly is.

Nope, not saying that. I'm just saying that other players get dismissed because they aren't as popular names. (Ie, Milito not even making the list despite being a key player in a treble winning season, and the fact Messi was in the nominations for the Golden ball at the world cup, when he wasn't even that impressive)

Depends what you think of what makes the best player.

Or because the dutch league isn't that strong? He should be up there though in my opinion

Where are Gareth Bale, Rafael van der Vaart and Luka Modric!?

Shocking!

The Dutch league is debateably in the Top 5 leagues in the world, tbh.

Then its good to rename these awards as "English, Spanish, Italian, German leagues best player". Its not about winning, its about getting nominated. I think once Totti scored 30 goals but still he was not shortlisted. I dont think we need any more explaination to say how **** these awards are.

ENG, SPA, ITA, GER, FRA are probably better.

50 goals in Holland clearly doesn't match 50 goals in Spain

I'd rank Spanish, English, Italian, German and French ahead of it, personally, but I see what you mean. Probably Russian too.

50 goals is 50 goals no matter what league you are in. He also had a better World Cup than Messi and judging by these nominations that means a lot in this award.

Should have definitely been nominated imo.

Spain, England, Italy, Germany and France?

All seem to do better than Dutch teams in European competitions.

Not to mention leagues in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico which are better than the Dutch League atm

Does anyone here actually watch Dutch league football?

In Spain they are confident that this award should go either to Casillas, Xavi or Iniesta. They totally disregard Messi for the award. Like I always say, their mood is still "up" there because of the WC win. The Balon d´or goes for the WHOLE season. And in that case, imo, it should be a close call between Messi and Sneijder.

Ronaldo was the best player in 2006-07 but Kaka won it as he won champions league and played well only in champions league. So by this logic, Sneijder should win it. Treble winner plus World cup finalist with 5 goals. And we know who will win it. oO)

It was a great achievement and he should really be on the list, but there is a reason that none of the big clubs have gambled on him this summer. Look at players such as Huntelaar, Kuyt and Afonso Alves who have destroyed teams in that league but not performed in 'bigger' leagues. I'm not saying that they aren't good players though, I really rate Huntlaar (and I think SI do too)

Just saying, French clubs do much better in Europe in comparison to Dutch clubs the past few years hence why it's a better standard of League.

Actually I do. The 10-0 was a joke. 8 goals in second half?. Com´on. That´s also why any dutch team has managed to get into at least a SF in continental competition since who knows when....
