Hello all, after years and years of player Football Manager and reading all of your stories, I?ve decided to take the time and do one of my own.

I?ve chosen to go with the club I support, Sporting Club of Portugal and also with an eye on taking over the Portuguese national team after a few years.

View attachment 402816

In order to challenge myself, I?ve decided to run the club a little differently. I will take a few lessons from Athletic Bilbao in Spain, and Chivas in Mexico but with a new twist. I will not be signing any players that have been capped by any country other than Portugal, the goal being to poach young talent from other teams/countries and then trying to cap them for Portugal.

Once this is accomplished, I wan to try to win the World Cup with only players from Sporting!

Can it be done? Probably not, but it will be fun to see how close I can get.

I'll be following mate, I look forward to seeing Ronaldo return in 2022 to lead a team of young guns to glory! (6)

Club Philosophies:

1. I play with Veez and Romains tactic, 3-4-2-1-0 with no strikers, so all strikers will be sold. This is beneficial to the club's finances because strikers usually command the highest salaries. I've had tremendous success with this tactic over the past few months and as I have limited free time I'm pretty much a plug and play manager.

2. As stated before, I won't sign any foreign internationals, but this will have to be grandfathered in as Sporting start with a number of these players. Additionally, any player on the squad who is capped by another country will not be allowed to play in any further games and will be sold immediately.

3. I chose not to being as manager of Portugal because it will take me a few seasons to implement my philosophy and my realistic aim is for the 2022 World Cup.

4. I tend to spend my transfer budget on paying compensation for poaching young players. I find that I can get an overabundance of young players this way and I can sell the players that don't fit into my future plans.

5. I'd like to try to get Portugal into the top 3 leagues, to get that 4th Champions League spot.

6. I'd like to try to have the World Player of the year be a player that comes through my system.

Thanks! I'm hoping to that I can bring my kids through in time for them to play with Ronaldo before he retires!

Sporting begin with $10m in the bank and a transfer budget of $3.49m, with a salary budget of 291k/week and we are currently spending 275k/week. I can reinvest 80% of incoming transfers so I should be able to raise a bit of cash by selling my strikers. I probably won't bring in any players during the window, I'll be saving up for FM Christmas, otherwise known as September 20, the date that Brazil regens come through!

Really liking the idea for this and can't wait to see how it goes! Will be following for sure! :)

Making me feel like a newbie because I didn't know that (Sept 20th). What does one do to take advantage of this festivity and acquire nice Brazilian wonderkids? (6)

Straight off the bat, all strikers and wingers are placed on the transfer list. I'm met with 3 or 4 players wanting to meet to discuss their future. I ignore them all, hopefully they will be on a plane before they get a chance to talk to me.

One of the things I hate about managing in Portugal is that many of the players are co-owned by these weasel agents. So, you sell a player for $5m, but 65% will go to an agent, you really got to watch that. I'd rather have a player play out his contract then give money to agents.

First player out the door, Diego Capel for $3m, 25% going to his agent. Unfortunately, he went to Porto, my main rival. The fans weren't happy about that but on the bright side, that's $3m less that Porto can spend on young Brazilians!

My next move is to set the squad bonuses. I choose the lowest amount. The players won't be happy about it, but the way I see it they are paid pretty well, I shouldn't have to dangle more money in front of them to get them to win, do your jobs!

Next, my star keep Rui Patricio comes to my door and tells me he wants to move to a bigger club. I just got here for heavens sake, let me get comfortable. I tell him I plan on qualifying for the Champions League and he basically scoffs. I'm sure his agent put him up to it seeing as how he owns 25% of him. I resist the urge to have security escort him out and dump him out back the bin. I immediately go out a sign uncapped Brazilian keeper, Guido on loan (and uncheck the 'can be recalled' box). Schalke offer $9.25m, non-negotiable. I accept.

Right behind him is Neto asking for more money. Excuse me? I?ve never even heard of this guy. It turns out he's on loan at Gent, he must have taken a red eye to meet me today. I tell him to pound salt (Something my mother used to say a lot). I'm not worried about him complaining as long as he's in Belgium he won't affect my squad harmony. I'd give him less money if I could get away with it, I'm trying to save money here, not ship it off to Belgium!

Sevilla then come in with an offer for Rojo, who has 17 caps for Argentina. The offer is $1.5m and *sigh* Rojo is 75% owned by his agent, so I decline. Capped or not, i'm not going to be giving away players here, I'd barely get 400k out of that. Porto come straight in with an offer of $5.75m, which makes Sevilla look like the cheapskates that they are. I accept the offer, the fans are livid. Why am I selling all their favourite players to our rivals??? The answer: Money!

Next one into my office: Elias. Let me guess, you want to move to a bigger club. This one doesn't even ask what my ambitions are, he just says he wants out. I have half a mind to stick him in the B team and let him rot, but I need the money, and he's been capped by Brazil, so out he'll go.

So, the date is now August 14, 2014. I've managed to make almost $13m, the bank stands at $22.7m and I'm 90k under my weekly salary budget. The board has also increased the reinvestment to 90% of revenue without even being asked. The preseason matches, which I don't manage, have been a mixed bag (results below). The good news is the team has almost fully learned the new tactic and should be raring to go on the 18th when we host Rio Ave.
and I'm in bed for the night!

Well, I usually go through each roster and request scouting reports on any under-16 player who is worth over 100k. I have my scouts in the region ahead of time but they don't always get back to me fast enough. If you act quick you can get them before they've signed a contract. You'll have to pay compensation but it's never more than a million.

Thanks, I've tried it before with Boavista but kept getting fired, should be easier with Sporting.

Unless I get fired. lol

Yeah definitely should be easier!

Sure you wont get fired... good luck! :)

Like how ruthless you are! Looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Things didn't get off to the best start. A disappointing opening night draw at home to Rio Ave turned into a nightmare loss when they scored in the 4th minute of extra time. This was followed by my assistant notifying me that Neto has been crying to his teammates about wanting a new deal. I thought he wouldn't be a problem because he was in Belgium, he must be calling his mates, or emailing them. I forgot about modern technology!

The chairman also informed me that the response to my nationalistic approach to the roster had convinced him that he wanted all the foreign capped players off the roster by the end of the window. I was able to put it off until January, the loss to Rio Ave sort of helped my cause. With $20m in the transfer budget and a loss to start the season, I had to do a little bit of shopping. I brought in 5 players and spent all but $1.5m of my budget.
I was hoping to see a few more players to make up for it, but didn't have any luck.

First Team Update
So, today I got the season rolling and after splitting the first 4 games, we went on a tear dominating 7 games in a row, including two taca victories.

The game at Braga was where I stopped worrying about the mediocre performance. I used this same tactic with Wolfsburg for 9 seasons once the team becomes fluent with it, it is almost unstoppable. I'll post a link to the tactic to give full credit to the creators.

B Team Update
I don't manage the B team but I do provide most of the players and this will be where I'll stash most of my young talent while they move towards Portuguese citizenship. My goal is to make this team so good that it consistently wins the Second Division.
So far, the team has been terrible. I think the only player that I've sent there has been Shakibala, who has been capped by Egypt and started complaining that there were too many players at his position.

Transfer Update

Because of my late-August spending spree I was only able to bring in three Brazilians. They're not world beaters but I've never had much luck during the first season, maybe the good ones don't start coming until season two? Not sure. Here are the three, they'll start arriving in 2014.

Finances Update
Just $3.7m left in the bank, but $40k under the weekly salary budget, so there is room there to play around. The one big difference from playing in Germany is the money. The Bundesliga prize awards are ridiculous, upwards of $40m for finishing top 3, check it out under Overview->Rules. Also, in Germany the German Cup prize money is crazy, in the latter stages I was getting a million euros per win! In Portugal I got $5k for the Taca win over Leca

View attachment 402203

Speaking of the game against Leca, I was watching the play by play (I usually watch it set to 'key plays') and I wasn't really paying attention. Leca wears the same green and white horizontal stripes that Sporting wear and they were home so we wore the new purple kit. So, i watched half the game cheering for Leca, thinking that was my team. I remember thinking, why am I being dominated by a lower league side???

Well, that's it for today. The wife gets home tomorrow so I'll have to slow down a little bit. I'm halfway into November so, not bad for two days. I usually can do a couple months per day, with a full season taking about a week. After all these years playing i've never done 20 years at one club, i'm hoping that this story will pressure me into doing that with Sporting, so far it's great! Thanks for the comments, and thanks for reading. I have a lot of downtime at work but no computer so I pass the day reading a lot of your stories and it's a good way to pass time.

Back soon!

Oh, one more thing to report so far. This tactic always makes scoring stars out of midfielders (I had Hector Canteros on Wolfsburg and he was on the ballot for World Player of the Year!)

Here is Adriens performance so far:
View attachment 402191
A question that maybe someone can answer. Does a players value only increase with his attributes or can you raise a players value if he has a great season like Adrien is having? I've never really looked into what goes into a players value because I've never been focused on selling players but I'd like to know, perhaps I can use the information to bring in some much needed cash.

The date is now January 12, 2014

The Gerson Magrao Saga

View attachment 401808

According to the Portuguese Informer, Gerson Magrao has 'shocked' Sporting by requesting a transfer. I'm not how much of a shock it was to the club, he hasn't played at all and he's making ?9k/week, honestly I'd be happy to be rid of him.
View attachment 401779
I happily accepted his request, but then soon after Magrao went AWOL from practice! Wonderful news for me, I fined him two weeks wages, that's ?18k, nice. Magrao was shocked at the fine
View attachment 401778
Well, you shocked me, so I shocked you back!

Personal Update

On a positive note, my first Manager of the Month award, I got the little achievement pop-up to go along with it. (Germany doesn't have a Manager of the Month award)
View attachment 401786

Weirdly, Elias has come back into my office to tell me he wants to move to a bigger club. Ya, I already know that, Elias. Remember in august when I offered you around and there were no takers and you reluctantly decided to stay? I get it, you want to be on your way, I can tell you this, you'll regret it when Sporting is on top of Europe!

Club Team Update

The season continued with positive league results against Arouce and Academica but then the schedule turned on me and I suffered back to back defeats against Benfica and Porto. This lead to the fragile morale of the club shattering and the team went into a tailspin.
View attachment 401785

One of the drawbacks of not babying my players is that their morale is very shaky, and when everyone is feeling bad, the losses pile up. I think my biggest weakness in this game is something that should be the easiest, tell the players that they're great, appease them when they complain. I don't have it in me and I'm paying for it. It's much easier after the first season, when I have my players in, I tend to have my favourites and I keep them happy.

League Update
View attachment 401784
Despite the dip in form, we sit comfortably in 3rd place at the halfway point in the league season, 2 points off the top. Portugal has 3 Champions League spots (for the moment, they always lose one spot after their 2010/11 season drops off the list, that was the year they had 3 of 4 semi-finalists and both finalists in the Europa League) I would love a top 2 finish to avoid the Champions League playoff, with possible opponents from Spain, England or Italy.

Taca da Liga Update
View attachment 401783
A seemingly favourable draw was followed by a disappointing draw against Maritimo, who should be my toughest opponent in the round.

Taca da Portugal
View attachment 401780
A 5th round win vs. Leiria coupled with a Benfica upset loss to Rio Ave meant that Sporting had a wide open path to the final, with only Porto remaining as a tough challenge. So, you can imagine my dismay when the first two teams drawn were Porto and Sporting! The rest of the teams rejoiced as the names were announced, another of the big three would go out in round 6, leaving only 1 left in the semi-finals.

National Team Update
View attachment 401777
After qualifying easily for the World Cup, they lost 4-3 to Serbia and then followed that with a scoreless draw.

The draw for the World cup saw an almost identical group that Portugal was drawn into for 2010 South Africa, with Brazil, Ivory Coast and Australia

B Team Update
View attachment 401776
After sending 5 additional players to the B team, they saw some success and pulled themselves out of the relegation slots. They are currently the only B team that is above the relegation positions!

Finances Update
View attachment 401775
The ?10m that the club began with is now gone, we are in the familiar position of being in debt. It currently stands at half a million euros but I don't see any way to stop the bleeding as far as money going out the window. I've sent many unused players away on paid loans and have terminated several contracts as well as kept a very small squad but the bank balance keeps shrinking. I am desperate for that Champions League money

View attachment 401172

With a league record of 4 wins, 1 loss and 5 draws since the last update I found myself in 5th place in the table with an overall record of 13 wins, 5 draws and 6 losses. The record was not too shabby but the fact that Nacional da Madeira and Braga both have overachieved has left us in 5th.

The table looked like this: Games played in brackets
Benfica 53 (25)
Porto 46 (24)
Braga 46 (24)
Nacional 45 (25)
Sporting 44 (24)

Now, if you asked me I'd say that we were right on schedule, just two points off a guaranteed Champions Laegue spot. Apparently, the board didn't see things that way.
View attachment 401170

I think my mistake was telling the board that I would be a title contender in order to get a slightly larger budget. So, I'm not sure if it was the 9 points off the top, or the 5th place position that got me called onto the carpet but I had some splaining to do! The conversation went something like this:

Board: We're not happy with your performance, 5th place is not good enough, we should be in the hunt for the title.
Tweed: I had no indication that you were unhappy with my performance, I have to say this comes as a bit of a surprise.
Board: It shouldn't, things have not been going well lately.
Tweed: Well, we've been riddled with injuries, we only have 1 healthy keeper and our last 3 games have seen only 5 healthy subs.
Board: We feel that's not a legitimate excuse.
Tweed: (biting my tongue) Okay, please tell me what I can do to save my job
Board: You need to get 9 pts in the next 5 games

I quickly did a mental check of our upcoming schedule

Tweed: You got a deal!

On a side note, after getting 44pts in 24 games (1.83 pts per game), I was told that this wasn't good enough and to save my job I'd have to get 9pts in the next 5 games (only 1.80 pts per game). That didn't really make sense to me but I'm happy to still have a job. It would totally suck to get fired halfway through the first season in my first story ever.

Upcoming schedule for the next 5 games (9pts needed)

March 30 at home to Belenenses

April 4 away to Academica

April 13 home to
Benfica

April 19 home to Guimaraes

May 4 home to
Maritimo

The odds are in my favour as far as keeping my job into May, with 4 of the 5 games at home. I just to win three of the games and I'll be good, but who knows with this board? I'm just happy that they gave me a chance, I've been fired many times before but I've never had a meeting to discuss it.

Overall, I was pleased with the regens, particularly because the top player, Paulo Henriques is a keeper. If I could register him for action he'd seriously be my 2nd team keeper at the moment.

March 30 - Sporting 2 Belenenses 1
Adrien, Henrique with goals

3 points in the bag, 6 more needed in the next 4 games, not that I'm worried. I totally disagree that I should be sacked at this point.

I know a couple players that would be sad to see me go, Andre Martins and Adrien, who are both putting up monster numbers in my system.
View attachment 401154View attachment 401153

Adrien, in particular, is having an unbelievable season, I've never had a player lead the lague in both goals and assists in the same year.
View attachment 401152

The win puts us back into 3rd place, just two points behind Porto, who bought two of our best players in the offseason. There's no way I should be fired!
