Sunderland Team News:
Steve Bruce has assembled a Sunderland side of considerable dynamism and creativity, with top scorers Asamoah Gyan and Darren Welbeck (presently injured) leading the line well.

The Mackems always look to press high up the pitch against Chelsea, and it was a ploy that worked well earlier this season. They have added to their midfield options with the recent signing of versatile Stephane Sessegnon, a former teammate of Claude Makelele at PSG.

Sulley Muntari is still waiting for a visa. The combative (often overly so) Lee Cattermole may return to action. If selected, Bolo Zenden will play against his old club. He made 59 appearances scoring four goals between 2001 and 2004 while at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea Team News:
Chelsea will be fired up to remedy the sickness that a 0-3 home defeat by Sunderland three months ago helped set in. The squad was very depleted that day, with full-back Paulo Ferreira filling in in the centre. The switch backfired and Chelsea were loose all over the pitch, a series of errors and failures to close down gifting the impressive visitors.

Alex, Yuri Zhirkov and Yossi Benayoun remain out of contention, but the starting line-up has returned to something approaching full strength again. Neither of the new boys, David Luíz and Fernando Torres, will be available for selection, and Daniel Sturridge has departed on loan.

Yet Frank Lampard is finding his range again, Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka are finding the net again. Essien (another who missed Sunderland's visit) and Mikel are fit and Luíz's former Benfica teammate Ramires is showing why Carlo Ancelotti was so determined to sign the Brazil midfielder. His late, raking gallops and shot against the post very nearly earned a win at Goodison at the weekend.

Sunderland Stats and Milestones:
  • Sunderland's last major piece of silverware was the FA Cup in 1973 when Ian Porterfield scored the winner for the Second Division side against Leeds.

  • They have the sixth best home record in the division with 23 points out of a possible 36 with wins against Man City, Aston Villa, Stoke, West Ham, Bolton and Blackburn, draws with Birmingham, Arsenal, Man Utd, Everton and Newcastle and just one defeat to Blackpool.
