The aim with this first team thread is basically so that users can both give and ask for for hints as how to coach Man Utd and most important, their squad in 11.3. Before posting, please have a look through the thread as the question might already have been raised and the solution or at least a suggestion might lie under your very nose.

As we all know, the game is not only about tactics, setting up a strategy that suits the clubs stature and matching the players abilities, but also about man handling. If you have a question or a tip on how to handle a certain player, this is just as important. This is often a part that is forgotten

what about signings them, is this not something that we should discuss to ?. Well yes, any recommendations about players are most welcome. Perhaps the reason that user struggle with Man Utd is that they lack a certain player type but in the end , this thread will still be a support thread to those playing with the 11.3 squad so hints and tips as how to play them in 2013/14 after having signed 8 new players might not be of any use to anyone

To make this thread as in depth as possible, please try to follow these simple guidelines and hints

  • When asking a question, the answer will only be as in depth as your question
- The more information you provide, the better the chance you will get a good answer with lots of reasoning

  • When posting your strategy, please put in the effort to explain your reasoning behind it
- Why are you setting up Evra as a Wingack on defend instead of a attack. Why are you using Rooney as a more limited AMC, giving him the first notch of little in creative freedom. Why are you using a very wide but short pitch. Just stating that it seems to work for me is rarely of any use to any user

  • When using Screenshots, make sure that the language is in English
- Even if you like me are from Sweden, please make sure that when uploading screenshots, the language is in English. I have seen screens using polish and Russian and I did not get any of it, ont knowing if it was a creen for the attacker or the winger :D

When posting your strategy, please put in the effort to explain your reasoning behind it

Let the discussion begin

Oh, and please dont forget to have a look in the stickie on how to make suggestions about threads for more teams as I will always be the one who opens them :D

Well known Fact Utd play better with 'Winger' Formations, due to the abundance of world class wingers (nani, valencia, giggs) they have at there disposal. Trying to be Fergie-esque defiantely works. 4-4-2's and 4-2-4's are Manchester Utd's best friends.

Anyone else find Berbatov hit and miss last time I was united Berbatov was brilliant this time doesnt seem as deadly I use him as a complete forward in attack or in a 4-5-1 a TQ suggestions for getting more from him would be nice only a matter of time before Rooney gets injured (always happens to me).

Agree with Laffles "Winger" formations are a must with united currently using a 4-2-4 against teams that I should be beaten and it works brilliantly combine with exploit the flanks and pump ball into box works wonders.

Try Target Man-Support with a full attack mentality and own area pressing. He'll just sit up top and have the ball kicked at him. He scores 15-25 a season. Its more how he plays IRL. I usually sell Berba after season one. His lack of work rate and consistency tends to get on my nerves. There are much MUCH better players out there. Hernandez and Macheda are two...

That's better from Berbatov man of match 9.4 rating 2 goals and an assist

I like playing Berbatov as a Treq as it gives him the license to sort of dictate the play up front and to find space.

Yeah, the Treq idea is pretty good. He may not do as much covering at that back and Rooney does, but he still try's hard.

It seems to me that when ever people start a game win United they go out and buy a new right back. I know that it is currently their weakest spot in the team, but do people not think Rafael will actually develop into a world class player as he is touted to? Or are people just to impatient and unwilling to play a young full back in the first season?

To me, the original transfer budget is better spent on finding replacements for the aging stars of Scholes, Giggs and Van der Saar.

Hey guys, im starting a new game right now with man utd. Ive never had a chance to manage them in the new update. My previous save was with west ham but im a united fan, and after watching last game against schalke 04 i just wanted to try it today. Im thinking about starting a 4-2-4 formation at home, and away against the top 5 clubs a more 4-3-3 formation or 4-5-1. I agree with Alienman. Im gonna let rafael start at the right back and rather looking for a replacement for scholes. What do you guys think? GO RED DEVILS!

My Recomended Signings:
-De Gea (Replacement for VDS)
-Jordon Mutch (Plays like Roy Keane when in Ball winning role)
-Juan Vargas (Truly Incredible LW)
-Mateo Mussachio (Much better than Rio)

I don't recommend giving Rio, Scholes and Giggsy new contracts as really they are poor on FM (Giggs and Scholes are IMMENSE in big games) Both Evans and Smalling will push Rio for first team football in first season, and both become top class.

I also feel that the following players need tutoring:
Ravel Morrison (Ryan Giggs)
Joshua King (Wayne Rooney)
Chris Smalling (Nemanja Vidic, especially if your playing them together. Become Pref.Person very very fast)

I'd advise starting Anderson as much as possible as a supporting Adv. Playmaker. He is strong, fast, creative and can really dominate the midfield. He's a proper asset.

If you read in one of Raikans Tactics, He re-trained Rooney to an AM. This is brilliant. Berba, Hernandez(Ill get to him in a min) and Roo as Forwards is genuinely insane. Backed up my Anderson, Carrick, Nani and Valencia. Its Amazing.

Javier Hernandez. Is. Without a doubt. The BEST Goalscorer on the game. Individual Training-Quickness(1 season) Then Composure (1 season) PPM's-Pass Ball into net then Likes to break offside trap. He just becomes brilliant.

Van Der Sar is a hard choice when it comes to replace him I got Adler last time got 2nd place in GK of the year but been thinking about De Gea this time round but Neur was impressive last night.

Lol Rooney just recommended me to sign his brother John dont think he is good for united

1.What playing style do manchester united usually adopt? As in what options for passing style, creative freedom, closing down, tackling, marking, crossing and roaming?

2.Also can someone please explain how roaming works, also wouldn't a rigid philosophy just cancel out the roaming?

3. In terms or Man uniteds defenders do they adapt a stopper/cover partnership?

4. I guess seeing as im united counter attack should be ticked, but what should i have for width, tempo, defensive line and focus passing?

I was going to set out like this:

4-2-4 Starting philosophy Attack/ Overload (control against big teams)

Passing: Direct
Creative Freedom: Default
Closing down: Stand off more
Tackling: Default
Marking: Zonal
Crossing: Default
Roaming: Default

Please if someone could offer help!

Agbonlahor+Through Balls=Unstoppable.

No english Club has a defender fast enough to contain him.
So yeah, He's amazing.

I agree. On 11.3 he's actually labelled as a wonderkid too, so I'm confused that people get rid of him. Even on 11.2 I used him from day one and he became world class. His brother is also quality in the future too, however, I signed Santon on a free, there's Evra of course & Joe Dudgeon has played a few games aswell (nothing less than a 7 in 12 games), so poor Fabio has hardly featured.

I have a problem though, while it may look like I have too many fullbacks; that's nothing compared to my midfield. I have Ganso, Fletcher, Hargreaves, Anderson, Thiago, Eriksen, Defour, Scholes (hasn't played at all though) and I've just signed Pablo Piatti (I intend to use him as a right winger, but upon signing him; Thiago complained about having so many attacking midfielders). I don't really want to sell any of them...I'm just addicted to signing midfielders.

Also, I signed De Gea to replace VDS, but Schalke haven't managed to extend Neuer's contract; so I was wondering...do you think I'd be able to juggle between the two of them next season if I signed Manuel?

Screenshots fully loaded... Pretty impressive if I do say so myself.
Some really good results in there too :D

Would post the players personal screenshots but that took long enough so I cba.
