TEAM THREAD: Playing Man Utd - A Tactical Discussion Thread

I have a problem though, while it may look like I have too many fullbacks; that's nothing compared to my midfield. I have Ganso, Fletcher, Hargreaves, Anderson, Thiago, Eriksen, Defour, Scholes (hasn't played at all though) and I've just signed Pablo Piatti (I intend to use him as a right winger, but upon signing him; Thiago complained about having so many attacking midfielders). I don't really want to sell any of them...I'm just addicted to signing midfielders.

What formation are you playing? Fletcher, Hargreaves, and Defour are all best in a holding position, so those three can cover for each other fine. Scholes can just be benched and forced to retire, no point in playing him beyond the first season. Ganso and Anderson are better served as midfielders than attacking midfielders in my opinion. That leaves out Thiago and Eriksen. Thiago is stuck in the middle, but does Eriksen play on the wing at all? What I know of his attributes he looks like a suitable winger.

And play Piatti like you would play Messi. He is basically has the same strengths as Messi but not as strong. I use him as a ST dropping deep with Malaga and he does well for me.

In summery, that is a lot of midfielders that are good players. I would really advice to sell ones you don't use much, or don't fit your tactic. And depending on what season it is, sell Hargreaves.

Just started a new game with Man Utd. Gonna play 442 and 4411 I think. Any advice?

Currently trying to sign De Gea, Mutch, Kadlec.

4-4-2 imo, You could download JP Woody's Brian Clough Tactic. It fits United like a glove. I'm using it now and getting amazing results like 5-1 v Chelsea in the community shield
Im in my first season with United and I signed Kadlec as back-up to Hernandez and I bought De Gea aswell but made it so he would join at the end of the season when VDS retires.

I've been trying my hand at making my own tactics atm. I made 3 different 442's to suite different striker combinations.

Transfers
Connor Wickham - £3m
Jordon Mutch - £2.8m
Alex Chamberlain - £2.4m
VaclevKadlec - £1.2m

Trying to get Jordan Henderson and waiting for scout reports on De Gea.

I got De Gea for 15m i think.

Rooney, Hernandez (Deep lying forward, poacher)
Berbatov, Rooney ( Treq, Adv Forward)
Hernandez, Berbatov (poacher, Treq)

Kadlec can slot in to replace Hernandez.

I have those exact combo's except when I play Berba and Rooney, I have Rooney as Complete forward. May end up changing it.

Does anybody know how the following players turn out maybe with future screenshots:

O.Norwood

Please stay on topic and notice that this thread is mainly about a tactic discussion about how to play the 11.3 squad. Also notice that all users wants to know how good a player gets in a few years as it spoils all the fun / TBH

if you want to know more about the team that is not tactical, I would suggest that you use this thread instead. Lets keep this one on topic instead wihtout spoiling too much for those not wanting to know who becomes a superstar etc.

OK, first season, you don't need lot of players. You'll need a playmaker, cuz Scholes and Carrick can't carry whole season, and Anderson is injured and poor. So, i would recommend someone like Modric. There is this one guy from Nurnberg called Ilkay Gündogan, who's their best player and he is wonderkid on FM11. I strongly recommend those too for playmaker role. If you sign Ilkay Gündogan, let Scholes tutor him and he'll become one of the finest playmakers. That's it for first season. You don't need a winger cuz you have Nani, Park, Giggs, Valencia, Bebe and Obertan. Obertan and Bebe have decent PA ( around 170 both and that's good). Rooney and Anderson can cover winger position too. After this season, I would sell Anderson, Owen and Brown to give room for Gündogan, Macheda and Smalling.

Second season, defo GK, Lloris, Adler, De Gea.... my choice would be Lloris, but they are all "the same" so, whoever you like better. You'll need a good CM, maybe Lorenzo Cristieg or Daniel Kofi Agyei for the future. You don't need a left back, cuz Evra can do the job at least one more year, and you have Fabio, who's great after 3 season. Play with Rooney as Complete foward and Hernandez as Poacher, bring Macheda sometimes and keep Berbatov as backup till the end of season. Offload Berbatov, and O'Shea, even Ferdinand.

Third season, buy some CB, there should be some decent regen, if not, get someone like Varane or Michele Camporese who plays in Fiorentina, just for backup to Evans and Smalling. You'll have Vidic too, but, he's getting old and you need a long term backup player. Those too are perfect. They can even be better than Evans and Smalling sometimes. You're wingers should peek now, and you should give more room to Ravel Morison. But, he has 5 ambition, so I doubt he'll turn fine. If he doesn't, buy some winger. You'll need a playmaker too, search some re-gen or sign Thiago or Kevin, both well known wonderkids. Also, you'll need a backup for LB. I don't know any good young LB, so search for re-gens. You'll need a foward too, there's lot of good fowards in the game, Yaya Sanogo or Bueno would fit fine ( due their adaptibility). Sell Carrick, Park, Evra at the end of season.

Strategy
4-4-2 (4-2-4)

----------VDS
Rafael-Vidic-Ferdiand-Evra
----Fletcher-Scholes
Valencia-------------Nani
---Rooney-Hernandez

GK- Normal
RB-Fullback-support (attacking mentality, runs with ball often and crossed mix)
LB-Fullback-support (attacking mentality, runs with ball often and crossed mix)
CB- Normal
CB- Normal
CM- BWM - support ( closing down to half and short passing, low creat.)
CM- First season with Scholes, use him CM- attack with closing down to half, direct passing and high creat. After Scholes, use Advanced playmaker - attack with same tweekings.
LW- Winger- support ( closing down to half, cut inside, drill crossing)
RW- Winger- Support ( closing down to half, hug touchline, float crossing)
ST( left, play Hernandez here) - Poacher ( low creativity)
ST- Complete foward- support ( closing down to half, wide play-normal, creativity to half)

mentality- control
passing: Direct
creative freedom: discipl.
closing down: press more
tackling: Default
marking: Zonal
crossing: Default
roaming: Default

Def.line : Very high
Slow and Narrow.

Won everything with United, Napoli, and Burnly in 3 season top. Feedback please ?
Here's tactic.

Pretty good post imo. But I think you're wrong about Anderson. Whenever I've played as Man Utd he's been one of my best players (playing in a Scholes-type role).

---------- Post added at 05:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:33 PM ----------

(Sorry for double post, can't seem to edit my above post).

@DMF - you said in another thread that you got Hernandez scoring mad amounts of goals as Poacher. Did you make any adjustments to the poacher role? He's played 5 games, 0 goals, 5.8 rating. I must be doing something wrong.

What did you set his wide play to? He doesn't run channels so it should be set to normal, right?

What formation are you playing? Fletcher, Hargreaves, and Defour are all best in a holding position, so those three can cover for each other fine. Scholes can just be benched and forced to retire, no point in playing him beyond the first season. Ganso and Anderson are better served as midfielders than attacking midfielders in my opinion. Most of the time I play 4-4-2, but Berba, Rooney & Hernandez haven't been too consistent this season & have had their fair share of injuries, so sometimes I just play with the one up front & Ganso/Eriksen/Thiago behind. I forgot to mention that I also have Nani, Valencia & Eden Hazard too :P. I'll definately try Piatti as a striker, and Eriksen is currently out for a couple of months so there's no need to worry about him but I wouldn't mind retraining him to play on the left-wing tbh. Once the season finishes Hargreaves will only have a year left so I'll be selling him along with Obertan & Bebe who were loaned out before the start of the season.

How would you get you wingers to track the fullbacks like united do IRL ?

My Recomended Signings:
-De Gea (Replacement for VDS)
-Jordon Mutch (Plays like Roy Keane when in Ball winning role)
-Juan Vargas (Truly Incredible LW)
-Mateo Mussachio (Much better than Rio)

I don't recommend giving Rio, Scholes and Giggsy new contracts as really they are poor on FM (Giggs and Scholes are IMMENSE in big games) Both Evans and Smalling will push Rio for first team football in first season, and both become top class.

I also feel that the following players need tutoring:
Ravel Morrison (Ryan Giggs)
Joshua King (Wayne Rooney)
Chris Smalling (Nemanja Vidic, especially if your playing them together. Become Pref.Person very very fast)

I'd advise starting Anderson as much as possible as a supporting Adv. Playmaker. He is strong, fast, creative and can really dominate the midfield. He's a proper asset.

If you read in one of Raikans Tactics, He re-trained Rooney to an AM. This is brilliant. Berba, Hernandez(Ill get to him in a min) and Roo as Forwards is genuinely insane. Backed up my Anderson, Carrick, Nani and Valencia. Its Amazing.

Javier Hernandez. Is. Without a doubt. The BEST Goalscorer on the game. Individual Training-Quickness(1 season) Then Composure (1 season) PPM's-Pass Ball into net then Likes to break offside trap. He just becomes brilliant.

De Gea is a major problem for me. He refuses to leave Athletico. I've settled for Adler but I'm gonna try again for De Gea in the future. He's too good a talent to miss.

Does anybody know how the following players turn out maybe with future screenshots:
M.James

R.Tunnicliffe

Bebe
G.Obertan
P.Pogba
J.King
J.Cofie

Matt James..one of my favorite youngsters. He ends up being rotated in my Man Utd squad in the third season, averaging about 7.45 in 15 games, 10 as sub.

Ravel morrison - heard he was a wonderkid + he is uber-talented IRL...maybe get a good tutor.

Obertan - very inconsistent, but nonetheless one of my favorite loan stars for younger clubs. IE. for At. madrid, Juventus, etc he scores lots of goals if played right.

J. King - very fast, probably not high enough calibre for MUFC

Bebe - good super-sub in my experience

the rest - not enough experience or not noteworthy

hope I helped.

Oliver Norwood can turn out as a fairly good player with a tutor and given experience. Similar to Gibson in ability.

Thiago has now handed in a transfer request, a day after the January window shut :S

Loaned him out to Dynamo Kiev (they're an affiliated club :)) for the rest of the season. Hopefully he'll come back and want to stay, but obviously I'll allow him to leave if he wants, I'm sure we'll cope without him XD
