Emmanuel Frimpong opts to play for Ghana ahead of England

Emmanuel Frimpong, the Arsenal midfielder, has chosen Ghana over England after meeting Kwesi Nyantakyi, the Ghana Football Association president, at a London hotel following the Black Stars' 1-0 friendly defeat to Brazil at Craven Cottage on Monday night.
On Tuesday Frimpong tweeted: "I have Done My Part For the Love of The country Now Lets Wait and See The Outcome……"
Nyantakyi, who has held his position for less than a week, told the Guardian: "Yesterday we met him after the game at Fulham at a hotel. He wants to play for Ghana. We have to apply to Fifa now – send them the documentation and wait. It is out of my hands how long they will take, but with my experience [of these matters] I expect no longer than three months and it will probably be shorter than that."

Frimpong's decision will disappoint the senior England management and the Football Association. The 19-year-old, who was born in Accra and has impressed so far this season for Arsenal, played for the England Under-16 and Under-17 sides, before he pulled out of the England Under-21 squad named last week by Stuart Pearce for the Euro 2013 qualifier against Azerbaijan and the friendly against Israel.
Earlier this year Frimpong said: "If Ghana call me, I will ride my own bicycle from England to Ghana."

Disappointed tbh, has what it takes to be a top class player

Thomas Vermaelen's father has revealed his son is expected to be out for up to six weeks as he recovers from surgery on an Achilles injury.

The Belgian stopper suffered the injury in the club's UEFA Champions League play-off match against Udinese last month and it was initially hoped he would not require surgery.

The 25-year-old missed eight months of last season with a similar injury in his right foot and although this injury in his left ankle is not believed to be as serious, he has had to go under the knife.

Arsenal have yet to publicly comment on how long he will be out for but his father estimates up to six weeks after having flown to Sweden on Monday for the operation.

"The doctor in Stockholm, where Thomas was operated on last time too, recognised the problem now," He told Belgian website Sporza.

"He would not take any chances and immediately operated on Thomas. He expects five to six weeks of unavailability."

Ignore the somewhat provocative sub headline, but Capello makes a good point abut the long term injury and the fact he went on holiday

Fabio Capello says England not to blame for Jack Wilshere injury

• Fabio Capello questions Arsenal's treatment of midfielder
• 'He suffered against Switzerland then went on holiday'

Fabio Capello has said England are not responsible for the ankle injury that will sideline Jack Wilshere for at least another two months and has hinted at surprise that Arsenal allowed the teenager to go on holiday after aggravating the problem on international duty rather than immediately implementing treatment.

Wilshere suffered a kick on the joint during the 2-2 draw with Switzerland at Wembley in June, a knock sustained after Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, had suggested the 19-year-old was "in the red" in his breakthrough season at senior level, meaning he faced serious injury if he did not rest. The midfielder was withdrawn from the England Under-21 squad for the summer's European Championship, only to struggle in pre-season and limped out of the Emirates Cup tie against New York Red Bulls with a recurrence of the problem.

He is not expected back until November at the earliest, and is now wearing a protective boot. Yet Capello was quick to absolve England of any responsibility, claiming the player had been troubled by the hot spot on the bone, as diagnosed by Arsenal's club doctors, from 2009, since when he has featured heavily on loan at Bolton Wanderers and for Arsenal.

"I spoke with the doctor," Capello said. "I know that he suffered the same two years ago. Then he suffered this accident against Switzerland, it's true, and afterwards he went on holiday. When he started the new season, he was not fit. Now they've found the problem."

Asked whether he was surprised that Wilshere had been allowed to depart on holiday rather than begin rehabilitation or preventative work immediately after suffering the kick against the Swiss, Capello said: "I don't know. It's not my job to say what happened, but he suffered against Switzerland and then went on holiday for a month.

"But look, I want to explain: when I selected him, he was fit. Things can happen during the game. That's normal. People get shoulder, knee, head injuries … If you play, that's possible, and people can be injured in tackles. It happened. But when he started that game he was fit. If he hadn't been fit, he wouldn't have played. That's the big difference. Now I hope he will be fit in a really short time for Arsenal and for us because, for the future, he's a really important player for us both."

Wilshere, who gained his fifth cap against Switzerland having made 49 appearances for Arsenal last season, will miss the end of England's Euro 2012 qualification campaign and a significant number of his club's Premier League and Champions League group games.

Wenger has said that, while the player was on holiday, the joint was "all right and then his pain increased when Arsenal were on tour in Asia" in pre-season. The injury is to be assessed in two months' time. The protective boot is due to be removed in mid-October and, if the problem is not cured by rest, there is the possibility of inserting a screw into the joint, ruling him out into December.

On Frimpong - he decided that a while ago. For what it's worth (I expect CJACKO or someone to come along and say Wenger is actively trying to impede English football) - Wenger has been trying to convince the FA to call him up for AGES. He was brilliant in pre-season last year, and when Wenger was asked about him, he said he hopes England call him up soon to that Ghana can't.

Afobe has also chosen DRC I believe.

Frimpong is going to play Eng U21 football to try and attract Ghana's interest. Hope he does well for them, although it's a little sad that he has to do that.

Yeah really England missed potentially good midfielder. Would have liked him to play for England but fair play for following his heart.

What about wilshere?

Edit you've just posted

Hadn't realised it was a long-term problem...

I think it's silly to point the finger at Capello, or at England. He may have got the kick while on International Duty, but he could have been kicked at any point for Arsenal or for England. It just smacks of people looking for someone to blame and so blaming it on him - or, indeed, on Wenger who at times had little choice but to play him due to injuries to Diaby and co.

I assume we let him go on holiday because they didn't realise the extent of it. I think Wilshere said at the time it was just a small knock he felt and that he'd be OK, basically. Clearly our physios agreed/believed him and thought rest was the best option.

Interesting insight from FC, though.

I think what suprised me is the fact that they didnt particularly follow up. I know Wilshere said it was ok, but you would think they would take no chances on a long term problem. Perhaps i am being a bit harsh

Not harsh - I thought the same. But I think as well because he played 49 times last season and he really had to rest. I guess it would have been worth him missing a bit of pre-season and giving him a holiday post-rehab if it meant he would be fit for this season.

I think it's just really unfortunate timing, though.

Huge shame for Arsenal and England, especially with games against Holland and Spain coming

[h=1]Vermaelen back training in one month[/h]
Centre back Thomas Vermaelen is expected to be back in training with the first-team squad in around a month.

Vermaelen has undergone a minor procedure to remove an inflamed plantaris tendon from his left ankle.
This is the same treatment that he had on his right ankle in January this year and has nothing to do with his Achilles tendon.

The action was taken after consultation with specialists who advised this was the best thing to do to prevent it becoming a persistent problem.

Good video on the Ox for the U21's the other day.

Wow.

Shame Mertesacker was continuously exposed by the German RB (Trash or Trasch? o.O) in the Poland match. Took out Lewandowski with a monster tackle and made some pretty good interceptions. And Szczęsny... Well, he was just ******* superb.
