Joss, here is that "Quote" you were after about Cesc. Looks kinda legit. :S

Fabregas ne veut plus partir / Angleterre - Transferts.

Even if it isn't true. I hope it makes it's way to Spain and see the reaction. Whether that be from Cesc himself or Barcelona.

It's not real. Blatant copy of a spoof article on Yahoo, and the magazine's wiki says it's "satirical and ironic". :(

Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini claims Arsenal have beaten him to the signature of Ricardo Alvarez. bit.ly/lnfwhL

Saw this a while ago on twitter. General consensus was "take with a massive pinch of salt" - highly unreliable source (Zampairini, not SS) who told another source that Arsenal were "interested".

Horrible, infactual, and badly researched article by Jamie Jackson for the Guardian. Either his sources are taking him for a ride or he's looked on one Arsenal forum and made an "informed" opinion. Either way, he's quite clearly wrong on several levels.

Cesc Fábregas is free to leave Arsenal but only if Samir Nasri stays | Football | The Guardian

1. Doubt Rosell and Gazidis have lunch together all that regularly, and I doubt that - if they do at all - when they do, they talk about Fabregas. They certainly do not (especially after the majority of Barca/Rosell's comments about Cesc) have a "healthy, working relationship". I think more people would have picked up on this if true.

2. Of course Fabregas can play in a 4-4-2. We played 4-4-2 until 2009/10 - so from 2004 to then, he scored 28 goals and made 51 assists in 137 appearances. IN A 4-4-2! And had one of his best seasons to date alongside Mathieu Flamini in a 4-4-2.

3. I doubt we have much interest in Jagielka. We bid last summer and were told he would cost in excess of £15m, we pulled out and I don't think there's been much interest since. Certainly not seen any serious, reliable links regarding that point.

4. Says Vela is free to leave Arsenal. That's just simply not true - he's being given another chance by Wenger, as said on several occasions by Young Guns Blog on twitter (amongst others), and the seen by the fact that Wenger told him to report back for pre-season and gave him time off (on holiday) instead of letting him go to the Gold Cup with Mexico.

What's happening to the Guardian? That's the second awful piece on Arsenal I've seen today after this:

Should Arsenal admit defeat and allow Cesc Fábregas to join Barcelona? | Evan Fanning | Football | guardian.co.uk

The comments on that are hilarious. First person says we "stole" Fabregas from Barca and that should reduce his value somehow. Just like Messi's value is decreased by the fact they "stole" him from Newell's, or Pedro's or Xavi's etc. Barcelona "steal" plenty of young players.

The Guardian tend to waver between excellent and truly ****, unfortunately. Those articles were laughable, and I don't even dislike Barca that much.

It's not even the suggestion that Cesc might leave that annoys me. It's their reasoning - the first article, by Jamie Jackson, clearly just hadn't been researched in the slightest. Richard Williams tends to post a lot of **** as well. Mention "foreigner" and he'll blow up.

There are a few journalists who are so bad it makes you wonder how they got their job. My personal 'favourite' is Oliver Holt: he basically has a massive ***** for Martin O'Neill, and has been slagging off Villa ever since he left. One of his most recent quotes: "Ashley Young is a brilliant player who has been getting better and better each year." Really, Mr Holt? Because in my eyes, each year he's got slightly worse from his stunning debut season.

You should read what we have to put up with in Argentina... you should be more than happy with you journos!

but did'nt Barca agree to pay for Messi's growth hormone treatment as Newell's could not afford it... but I feel the word steal is badly used, if you are a prospective young player and a big club approaches you where you would have much more of a chance to show ur ability to the world rather than rotting in the bottom divisions you would take it and you cant really blame the big clubs cos they have plenty of money and appeal while the small clubs dont and there is now way you can change that

However in Fabregas' case, its not Arsenals fault that Barca never truly paid attention to this truly pheonmenal talent and let him be enticed by first-team football at a top club like Arsenal and now they swoop down like eagles from all corners saying how much Fabregas' wants to join them and stuff thinking they can get him at a cut-throat price cos he has some sort of Barca DNA nonsense

God I really Mourinho gives them a run for their money next season, the way they have approached this situation is completely disrespectful

If we do buy this Alvarez lad for £12m, hes going to have a lot to prove to justify that fee.

More like £8m rising to £10m from what I've heard. Been compared (in style only) to Kaka in that he's skilful, tall/thin and glides past players. Warnings that he's not as good as Kaka was at Sao Paolo and that he may take time to bed in. Seems to be a replacement for Rosicky but I'm not sure why... In the next 2/3 years are left-forwards could be: Ryo, Alvarez, Nasri, Pedro Botelho, Gervinho.

Or our Attacking Midfielders: Cesc, Ramsey, Alvarez, Wilshere, Aneke.

Just don't see why we need Alvarez.

sigh. another creative midfielder.

To be fair, we should be completing the signings of Chamberlain and Gervinho as well as him next week so he won't be the only one in. Also firm interest in Samba, but Blackburn are being very cheeky and trying to drive up the price. Talks ongoing as far as I know...

Interesting quote on Alvarez from wearethenorthbank:

"Alvarez is typical Rowley and Wenger. Bags of ability, but very raw. He'll be the gamble signing."

I don't want 'gamble' signings. I want well thought out, well priced, experienced players. Gervinho and Samba fit this mould perfectly. I just see no use for Alvarez

It's obviously been "thought out". Just that, as ever with Wenger, there is SOME risk factor in the deal. Just like there is in signing any player: A £50m Torres; a £15m, inconsistent, Ashley Young; a £16m, inexperienced, Phil Jones; etc.

It could turn out to be a real coup, or he could flop. We simply don't know and it would be harsh to form judgements before we've even seen him in an Arsenal shirt IMO.

Samba arguably presents just as much risk as Alvarez. Not proven in a high defensive line, could cause some issues in the changing room, etc.

Just if any of u lot are interested, Ashley Cole stated that his favourite game he ever watched was the Arsenal-Newcastle FA Cup Final in 1998 when yo lot won 2-0 and Anelka bagged the decisive goal

The days of Ray Parlour, Marc Overmars and Anelka in their prime:wub:

Well he can go **** himself. I don't want him to ever mention the word 'Arsenal' again so long as we both shall live.

But honeslty I think you should turn your priority to other targets for the moment, Gervinho looks class and set to join, Chamberlain probably wont be given too many first team apps next year and he looks set to join anyways... You should look to seal the deal for Samba cos frankly speaking I know forming judgments is harsh but in the current circumstances, all 3 of these players look a lesser gamble to me than Alvarez would be

Well.. not really. Just because YOU'VE never seen Alvarez play, doesn't mean he's more of a risk than Samba, Gervinho or Chamberlain. All of them have a risk-factor:

We don't know if Samba will fit in to the Arsenal mould - will he cause problems in the changing room? (Victoria Concordia Crescit = Victory Through Harmony), will he be too slow?

Gervinho: Yes, Ligue 1 is more of a natural stepping stone to the PL than the Argentinian Division, but it's still nowhere near as good as the PL is IMO. Every chance that he could flop and fail to adapt to a new country, league - with a different pace, more physicality, etc. Plus there's the ever-present risk that he COULD block some brilliant young talents like Myiachi and Pedro from coming through.

BUT - I think this deal presents the least risk. He's 24 so he's near his peak, has a bit of experience, and is a winner. Should do well.

Chamberlain: He's what? 18? Paying £10m for an 18 YO is always a risk - he has pace, but that's not enough at the highest level. You need to be strong, intelligent, etc.

The only point I'm making is that saying "I don't want risk" re: transfers is ridiculous. EVERY transfer is a risk.

----------

EDIT: Regarding other players, we are turning our attention to them. These three deals have going on for a while: left-foward was always going to be an area that needed strengthening. (Although not sure we need double strengthening there). So was RB (addressed), and now he's identifying CB targets.

Samba, Cahill, Jagielka all targets. The last one is the main target despite what I said yesterday about Jamie Jackson (Most of it was BS, he happened to get this right it seems)
