Hmm. From Graham Hunter's twitter time-line:

[Mata's clause] not a recision clause/buy out clause in the usual sense but a clause in his contract that if a club bids €25m Euros. Then Mata can either choose to join that club or will be entitled to a serious contract improvement for staying at Valencia

I also didn't know that there was a clause that would do that, allow for an increased wage offer. Whether it's true or not is another matter, although It seems to all fit together, as you say, why Wenger might be holding out for a little over £20M.

One thing ive noticed is how a lot of clubs are relying on other clubs to do business so they can do their own. Perhaps an interesting development. Apparently (according to the ***** that is twitter) United bid 30M last week for Sneijder, I'm feeling sceptical about that but we already know that our first team coach is hugely keen on him. Should we follow up on the supposed interest, any Nasri deal would be off. Would Wenger still follow up on Mata, and flog Nasri abroad? I actually think that would be the better approach, Mata >>>> Nasri down the left.

Better for Arsenal all round if they sell Nasri to Inter as well.

Some clarification on Mata:

1. Graham is unreliable, but he's right.

2. Still only appears to be for Spanish clubs. Spanish law, not exclusive to Mata as I had thought.

Basically - we're not likely to be very close to Mata.

Right about what?

About Mats' clause not being straight-forward.

O right, was parts of what i was saying correct? It's slightly odd I think. I did find an article on it earlier actually I think, i'll try and fish it out.

Found it, gives some information about the whole thing, along with some other Valencia players.

Can't see where it says about the different release clauses..

Also says we're "the team from Highbury" :|

To be fair, they are from Spain so may not be up to date. ;)

Here is the the bit of info.

"As contemplated in the contract signed by the club and the player last January, they should negotiate an increase in the payroll of the player or a sale if they arrive offer around 25 to 30 million euros, a situation that has occurred."

Just not sure how reliable that is. You don't have to be "up to date" to know we moved to the Emirates!

Also that doesn't say anything about English/Spanish clubs? All the info I have is that it's a legal thing that every player in Spain has that they either sell for €25m (in Mata's case) to another Spanish club or they give him a significant pay-rise, which is exactly what that says. Rule only applies to Spanish clubs, so Arsenal haven't met it and don't appear likely to.

Although, John Cross says we want him for £15m!

Arsenal want £15m-rated Valencia winger Juan Mata but to play alongside not replace Samir Nasri - Transfer News - MirrorFootball.co.uk

Really I have no idea, but apparently there are two clauses, or it's the same price for foreign clubs in his contract however taxes and/or fees make it up to around 25M Euros.
Either way I don't think we will sign him unless Nasri goes. I would of thought some things may have been sorted today. Was he seen at training today as he was due back? I Haven't read or seen anything.

I think we're probably looking at him anyway... Cesc won't stay forever, and Mata can play there too. But maybe you're right and our hands were forced early because of the speculation and/or a possible break-down in talks between Wenger and Nasri (not sure about the updates on this - but he's going to travel to Asia unless something drastic happens).

The fee is just €25m - not different for Spanish and others, it only applies to Spanish clubs and there doesn't appear to be any release fee for English sides. And since it's a technicality by law, it's not like they're willing to sell at that price anyway. So we might have to up our interest to more like £25m which I imagine would do it (see Villa, Silva)

I guess, According to RyoMiyaichiFan on Twitter, he has listened to a phone call from JamesOlley from the London Evening Standard that Nasri and his agent will be Meeting Wenger tomorrow who will have an improved offer on the table. Take with a pinch of salt I guess.
And, wearethenorthbank(Reliable?) has said that we bid £6M + Add ons for AOC, which has been turned down.

Yeah he's reliable (WATNB).

Release clauses in Spain normally have 2 options at the same figure, if a club comes in with the money matching the clause the club accepts the bid but the player gets the option to recind their contract and ask for a significant payrise... Ball's in the players/agents court at the minute.

Any Info regarding Foreign Clubs? Or is it down to the club how much they accept.

Worth reiterating: there's a difference between the formal release clause (clausula de recisión, ie clause to rescind contract) that all .players in Spain have, and clauses that some players get inserted into their contracts where their club agrees to sell for certain fee
