Honestly, Samba and Vermaelen is going to be one of the most scary defences in the league. If Arsenal can fix their set-piece issues (which I fully believe they can) and learn to shoot once in a while rather than walk it in (hmm...) then it's down to whether they can retain one of Cesc or Nasri, or who their replacements are, to determine whether they can offer a serious title threat again.

I think.

I think Samba will go a long both his own individual ability aerially at both ends, and with the way he talks and commands which will cut out the errors that come with lack of organisation. I also believe his experience will have a positive effect on Woj's development in goal, knowing he has a centreback he can rely and one who will constantly communicate with him, and that in turn will encourage him to do the same.

But agree they must keep one of those players, or at the very least get an equivalent replacement

have to agree with u. if cese leaves, then ramsey or wilshere could come in for his place.
but for nasri, had to find aside from Vela, or maybe gerhvino (doubt it , put him at the right) or if (possible ) mata ;)

Mata would be a great replacement

He isn't what we need. Wouldn't fit into the formation. Never rated him. Say no more.

He is exacly what Arsenal could do with, not only can he beat players and play the "Barca way" he actaully shoots on sight unlike most of your players.

He is not what Arsenal needs. They can do lot better than Downing and run to the byline and cross is not the way Arsenal plays. Mata would fit in superbly.

Downing for me is at his best playing on the right and cutting in and shooting at goal (which is one of the things Arsenal lack) insted of pass-pass-pass-pass etc etc etc. Sometimes you need someone who will just take a chance and have a pop at goal.

NOPE. Not a left footed right winger...That's AJ,

Downing is a pure Left Winger who has an excellent delivery, his assist record in Europe/Prem/International is one of the best around.

The best left footed left winger England have but he is a 'proper' winger who will deliver brilliant balls to ST's...Not the Arsenal way at all.

He can shoot from range quite well but he hasn't got brilliant pace to burst through the middle like an Arshavin has for example.

Downing-Liverpool w/ Carroll/Gerrard/Kuyt etc to cross to=Perfect.

Not what Arsenal look for in a left winger unless Wenger has plans to sign Zigic.

(Baring in mind I know a ting or two about Stewie )

If he joined Arsenal, he'd work in training to not take a shot on. The players we have haven't always decided not to shoot, it's the tactic we roll with, so Downing would be no different after a couple of months.

Pass on him, I don't want 'natural' wingers in the squad.

why not just sign Mata, I think Valencia will accept a 25m ish offer for him and he is much better than Downing, seriously 18m for Downing while you can get Mata for just a little more

7m is more than just 'a little more', but I'd certainly rather Mata than Downing by a long way.

7m is not really alot when u compare what Mata can offer you compared to Downing :)

It is, obviously as a Chelsea fan you wouldn't think so. 7m is a considerable difference in fee.

as i said not when you compare what Mata can offer you compared to Downing.... its not really about the fee when Mata>>>>Downing and I would readily pay that 7-10m extra to get Mata... do you lot even think that Downing is worth 18m?

No, Downing isn't worth that. But Mata isn't worth 7-10m pounds more either, inflation in prices ftl

still Mata>Downing so you can safely say that under any circumstances Mata would be worth considerably more than Downing

lol. It's not as easy as just "sign Mata" - Valencia are in financial fuckery, but they still want to keep their best players. As has been explained, his release-clause is put in by Spanish law rather than them saying "Yeah, he's probably worth about £25m". We'd probably have to make an offer closer to £30m to sign him. He won't push for a transfer because he's loyal to Valencia. And then there's other interest - sure, we have CL football but if Chelsea/City get involved? We can't compete with those sort of wages even if we had a bid accepted.

Unlikely we'll be able to sign him, and it's not an area that needs desperate strengthening.

7m is more than just 'a little more', but I'd certainly rather Mata than Downing by a long way.

This. Especially when you consider that Gazidis said that the cash pot (estimated to be about £50m by Swiss Ramble) funds not only transfers, but wages (1st year only), agent fees, bonuses, etc. so even if we had a £25m bid accepted and he accepted our contract offer, the deal would be worth more like £30-5m, + Gervinho (almost £15m+ in total I expect) and we have hardly any money left for other targets, like a CB for example. Gazidis also said it's not wise to spend the whole lot in one summer anyway, but it's why it's so important to get rid of overpaid dead-wood like Almunia, Bendtner and Denilson.

This is why Wenger is so "stubborn" and why it takes us so long to sign a lot of players - we have to be careful, and we have to make sure they're right for us. Of course that doesn't eliminate errors in the market but Wenger usually gets it right. We can't afford to pay £30m for a striker who has a great reputation but is on high wages and will just be used to sit on the bench.

As I said, 10m is a lot when you factor in wages, etc.

And no - Downing isn't worth £18m. Is/was Torres worth £50m? Is Andy Carroll worth £35m? Berbatov £30m? At the end of the day, players are going for more than they're worth all the time so not much point saying "Mata > Downing, Downing costs £18m so Mata would only cost £25m"
