IMO, if signing's are not made, I do not see Wenger here come the end of the season.
I always thought a manger was judged by his results, not by the signings.

HLansburyHenri LansburyWow I was ******* **** sorry lads

At least he's honest.

Well the loss was quite normal, Benfica didn't play that well in the first half because we only started with 3 or 4 starting players, as soon as the big boys got in it all got easier, but quite good that we had a great amount of consistency, Benfica does have like 15 new signings, good to beat a team like Arsenal even if it's in pre-season, good luck to both clubs.

I've gone past the point of blaming Squillaci all the time. Wenger takes full responsibility now - he knew we needed a new defender but has ****** around about getting one. Sure, there's no saying the defender he buys doesn't end up just as bad or even worse than our current ones, but at least it shows some intent on improving the squad. But with Arsenal now it's the biggest ordeal to sign a player that we need.

No offence to Benfica, but it's a club we really should be beating, even in pre-season when they're ahead of us in terms of fitness.

They made us look average in the second half, and we hardly had a shot. Very well done to Benfica - they showed what brilliant strength in depth they have, and their first team did brilliant with their constant high-tempo pressing game in the 2nd half.

Lansbury is a legend.

Ahah... well keep thinking that way. XD... I wouldn't be so sure, the overrall quality of both squads are quite even, and if Arsenal lose Fabregas and Nasri... even more unlikely a title challenge, which I wouldn't like.. My fav club in England... But this year does seem for the Man Utd again ~~...

on Van Persie’s injury…
It is an ankle problem, I don’t know how bad it is. Gibbs is injured and Vermaelen is injured. That is the negative side of the night.

on whether they will make the start of the Premier League season…
I don’t know yet.

Yaaaaaaaaaay :S

So right now we could be looking at Szczesny - Sagna, Koscielny, Djourou, Traore - Song, Wilshere - Nasri, Ramsey, Gervinho - Chamakh to play Newcastle.

Generally, yes.

But, to make a statement like "for the first time in a while, I will be active" and then not go by that statement is ridiculous.
Which of these pre-season results have been promising?

You really have to wonder what it is that means our players seem so injury-prone and are not yet up to fitness. London Colney is one of the best training facilities in England, our pitches are perfectly preserved and paid constant attention...

Do we have to look at the likes of Colin Lewin and our fitness coaches and wonder if they're good enough? Or was it the trip to Asia that's left us behind schedule? While brilliant for commercial revenue etc., the trip to Austria was all about fitness and we didn't seem to have these problems last (pre) season.

It's not just about buying a new CB etc., the main problem has been our lack of fitness.

But on the CB situation - our first choice CBs are fine, it's the short-of-confidence Djourou and Squillaci that's the problem. 5/6 of our goals conceded have apparently come when Squillaci was playing - the other was an OG vs Koln. Pretty telling, really.

I think he planned on but for one reason or another he hasn't been. Still 3 weeks until the window ends though.
He probably shouldn't of really come out and said that though, think it was more to put the fans at ease but ultimately it's coming back to bite him as he hasn't lived up to it.

4-0 against the top quality Malaysia XI of course ;)

It is an ankle problem, I don’t know how bad it is. Gibbs has a muscular [thigh] problem and Vermaelen has a slight back problem.

It starts again... :'(

I say no more. ;)

Mertesacker?

You mean you want to go to the extreme's and sign an immobile CB?

The happy medium IMO besides Vertonghen would be Kjaer at Wolfsburg who Roma are chasing for 7m euros, or alternatively just pay 17m euros for Subotic at Dortmund.

I really don't think Mertesacker will help, he has the turning circle of an 18 wheeler and the pace of Barney the dinosaur running a marathon.

He's a good CB, very commanding, but his mobility in the Premier League would be a huge worry to me...

true jamie. tall player too. and beside vermalen is good in the air. ditto for per.

Kjaer for 7million euros? Wolfsburg would surely want more than that.

They sigend him for 10-12 Million Euros, and he had average season. Was at fault for few goals. Still 7 Million is a bargain though. Superb ball playing skills for a CB..

^ What Sunilvk said.

He had a frankly poor season last season, they made a loss on Diego as well. Selling him to Athleti for 10m euros.

Kjaer has all the attributes a ball playing tall defender needs and he is agile, perfect for Liverpool and even Arsenal.

Alternative CBs for Wenger would be Vorsah/Ogbonna who are young and Premiership built.

Vorsah is essentially a younger Chris Samba. Would be a brilliant signing...

But now I am starting to worry for Arsenal, if they go into the season with the current squad then...I can't see them going anywhere.

Especially with Vermaelen out injured, Wenger should just sign Vertonghen and fix the CB problem in an instance...But I doubt he will.

Also I wouldn't read too much about his last season's performance. TBH whole team was **** poor. There was something lacking in them. If I was a Wolfsburg fan I would have waited for one more season. He looked very good before joining wolfsburg also played well in World Cup.

Was the best young CB in Europe at Palermo, him and Munoz were the match made in heaven.

He needed one more year in Sicily before he moved on, still got top ability he just needs a Champions League club to get confidence and show his talent on a big stage because Kjaer really relishes big games. Needs a Wenger type coach who will encourage him alot rather than a Mclaren who pretty much ignored him and treated him like he treated Grafite/Diego...Terribly.
