The Ballad of Charlie McGhee – 2nd Stanza

January 2018 – Winding up

It was moments after the final whistle of Swindon’s first match in January against Bradford. The dressing room was in jubilation. McGhee walked over and hugged Bjorn Sigurdarson, his side’s hero of the day. The Icelandic international has had a long road back from injury but his hat-trick today showed he is right back. Scanning around though McGhee found his target – Mattock. Joe wore the full brunt of Charlie’s displeasure at his silly send off as he picked up his second yellow before half time!

Unfortunately in the post-match recovery session Bjorn pulled up lame – he’d taken a hard knock to the chest and it appeared he had damaged some rib cartilage that would now setback his return another 2 weeks – disappointing after such a great performance.

View attachment 200858

The team faced a monumental challenge in the second game of the new year. Their FA Cup 3rd round tie saw them matched up with Premiership side Everton. McGhee sent his team out to play their expansive style that has seen them win so many plaudits in League 1 this season. Unfortunately, against opposition of the caliber of Everton, they were eviscerated. A 7-2 thumping that showed the squad, and Charlie, exactly how far from the top they really are.

Charlie had seen young Tottenham Loanee Cameron Carter Vickers go down after appearing to roll his ankle making a challenge in the Everton match. When the swelling didn’t subside as quickly Swindon sent him for scans and they revealed some fractures that will need to be pinned and see him miss 3 months – devastating news for the 20 year old who has been a rock at the back for Swindon. After discussions with the Centre Half Charlie decided against sending him back to Tottenham and there is still time for him to recover and get some much needed game time with the Robins to round off the year for him.

Charlie shook his head when he realised they would be facing Bradford for the second time in weeks in the League next – this is the 2nd time this has happened this season, someone in the FA offices must have been smoking something when they did the draw this year!! Whilst it was a different venue the result was the same and with Sigurdarson injured the attention turned to Jonathan Obika to shoulder the scoring load and his did so admirably today grabbing himself a brace.

View attachment 200853

Swindon faced Cambridge in their fourth game in January on the back of a couple of solid wins in the league. Unfortunately today was a less than desirable outcome, even if the performance wasn’t the worst. Swindon played their usual, expansive game and were made to pay by a Cambridge side that kept things tight – a goal from former Premiership striker Matt Derbyshire the game’s defining moment. With Sigurdarson still sidelined this game served to reinforce McGhee’s desire for a solid 3rd striker, but with the window winding down time was running out.

View attachment 200852

Thankfully SIgurdarson/Obika was back for the trip to Rotherham and despite an early equalizer from Rotherham this game was always Swindon’s with both 1st choice strikers getting on the score sheet.

View attachment 200851

The final match of January was the visit of 1st placed Chesterfield. In the week leading up to the game Charlie was searching high and low for a striker and one appeared in the most unlikely of places. Chesterfield, his upcoming opponents, utilize a one striker system that see’s Nathan Delfouenso start most of the matches. Backup striker Sylvain Ebanks-Blake has seen is opportunities limited which is ridiculous seeing as he only trails Delfouenso by a solitary goal in the Chesterfield scoring charts despite only playing half the matches and the majority of those as a substitute. Well when Chesterfield transfer listed him for a king’s ransom of 0 pounds due to his refusal to sign a contract extension, well, it was almost written in the stars for Swindon. A chance to grab a quality backup, one with Premiership experience, and weaken their now main rival for the League title – TRIFECTA!

View attachment 200850

After plundering their squad for a quality striker Swindon set about dealing their title amibitions a further hit in the match at Swindon’s County Ground and boy did they! A 3 nil thumping not only sent Chesterfield home with their tails between their legs but also saw the Robins climb above Chesterfield into 1st place – now the trick will be staying there!!

View attachment 200849

Danilo Pantic’s recent good performances were enough for him to be name Player of the Month for January. Also Walker-Peters’ good form and Swindon’s overall saw him and Charlie run 2nd in the Young Player and Manager of the Month awards respectively.

There it is. Charlie was looking on the BBC Football website but he could still scarcely believe it. His Swindon side were top and playing great footy. With a decent gap to 3rd as well now is the time to keep this progression going and make promotion a certainty!

Apologies for the quality of some of the screenshots for January and February (update to come) I was sick earlier in the week so got out of the house (to avoid spreading my sickness to my kids) and was playing on my laptop which is no where near as nice to play FM on as my PC...

February 2018 – Flexing their muscles

If January will be remembered as the month the Swindon charge to the top really took flight then February will be remembered as when they left everyone else behind. An amazing month for Swindon coupled with some below average results for the chasing pack saw the Robins establish a sizable lead.

The start the month McGhee, with confidence that can only be gained by watching your boys romp to top spot, sauntered into the Board room and demanded that he be allowed to go on a coaching course. Ok, it was more of a calm request but you get the idea, unsurprisingly he didn’t face any opposition.

Burton were sitting 20th coming into this one so few expected them to pose any real questions to Swindon and so it proved as the Robins knocked it around like it was a training drill on their way to as easy 2 nil win as you are ever likely to see.

View attachment 200841

A trip to Barnsley awaited Swindon following the Burton match and, as has been the case on a number of away games this season, the extra space afforded to the Robins by an opponent willing to attack at home was ruthlessly exploited as they routed Barnsley 4 zip.

View attachment 200840

Shrewsbury were next in the firing line. Despite coming into this one loitering around the edge of the Playoff spots their fans only got to witness them have a paltry 4 shots in total for the game. All the while watching Swindon score 4 goals in another dominating performance. The progression this side has made from the start of the season were they were timidly approaching games to now where confidence is sky high is stark!

For the 4th match of February Swindon faced Oldham at the County ground. Oldham actually played well here and really pushed Swindon. After going one up Swindon conceded a penalty but captain courageous Niki Maenpaa stepped up to save it. When Marcus Edwards scored the side’s 2nd on half time the game was over as a spectacle though.

View attachment 200838

Bit of bad news though to come out of the Oldham match. Jonathon Obika this time picking up a chest injury that will see him miss extended time. McGhee wasn’t too concerned though as scenario’s like this is exactly why he has brought in Ebanks-Blake.

View attachment 200837

The final game of February finished and Charlie just smiled. All around the County Ground the fans were singing his name. An injury to a key player is never good but Charlie’s insistence that a 3rd frontline striker be brought in bore fruit today. Ebanks-Blake had been brought in to provide title insurance effectively but a hat-trick on debut, well, it’s moments like these that make managers look like geniuses.

5 wins from 5, scoring 17 and conceding only 2 saw Charlie awarded Manager of the Month for February. Actually Charlie felt a bit sorry for Dean Smith of Birmingham as he too led his squad to a 100% record, any other month and that would usually be enough for the gong. Marcheda’s (seriously, what is he doing in league 1) 9 goals this month saw him awarded Player of the month with Obika coming 2nd. Pantic continued his good from picked up the Young Player of the Month award.

The big news this month. Whilst Swindon were able to pick up a full complement of 15 points this month from their 5 games Chesterfield could only manage 6 points from 6 matches. The result, a ten point gap at the top. As they enter the home stretch it is really starting to look like promotion can be considered a probability, rather than a dream, for Swindon. Charlie knows though that there is still work to do.

Superb results mate, well done, keep up the good work. Surely promotion is on the cards. :D

Smashing it in the League man! Must be much more enjoyable then your Peterhead days :p.

Also i don't think Everton liked you taking the lead against them, sent them into beast mode by the looks of it! haha

Nice job in the league in a great position for the run-in. Your team don't seem shy in the tackle decent number of bookings

Thanks bud! I'm pretty confident!

Everything you touch turning to gold right now! Great work! :D

Thanks mate - you're having quite a bit of success in your story also!!

Not wrong! I tried to chase the game against Everton. Wasn't pretty!

I've got them pressing quite a bit higher up and they are tackling harder so I guess the cards will flow but I dont mind as we have ok depth.

March 2018 – Storming away with it

March rolled around and Swindon picked up where they left off. An injury to Ebanks-Blake left them a little light on up front but thanks to goals from midfielders Winks and Edwards they scored a 2-1 win.

View attachment 199788

The lack of strikepower cost the Robins in the second game on the month when they played out a nil all draw with Blackpool. To the tangerines credit they deserved this result with their performance today.

View attachment 199786

Swindon got their march to the title back on track with a resounding 3 nil win in the 3rd game of March. Sigurdson, back in front of the adoring home fans was the difference today.

View attachment 199785

Tottenham loanee Marcus Edwards has found himself playing 2nd fiddle a bit this season to the wonderful Pantic this season but with the Serbian playing in a more deep central midfield role to accommodate the young Englishman he has thrived lately and today was no exception as he picked up a brace in Swindon’s 2-1 win over Southend.

View attachment 199783

Bjorn definitely loves the County Ground! Another match at home another 2 goals for the Icelandic international he as Swindon easily accounted for Bury in the 5th game of March for the Robins. Kijera’s late goal made things a little more stressful than they needed to be but it didn’t end up being anything more than a consolation.

View attachment 199781

Following the Bury match Charlie got news that Peterhead had been the subject of a takeover. McGhee remembered fondly working with local businessman Kevin McKenzie on a range of philanthropic initiatives and felt he would be a good choice to lead the Blue Toon.

View attachment 199779

The 6th game of March saw Swindon travel to St Andrews to take on fallen giants Birmingham. Despite O’Keefe's send off the Robins easily prevailed 2 nil.

View attachment 199777

That result also meant promotion was a certainly now for the Robins! They will be plying their trade in the Championship next year and with reasonable budgets to boot. Charlie has his eye on only bringing in one or two quality additions to the squad as he feels the squad generally has enough about it to stay up next season.

The final match of March saw Swindon take on Scunthorpe at the County Ground so you know what that means – correct, a Sigurdarson brace en route to a Swindon victory!

Campeones!!!

Turns out a League 1 win is enough to make you one of the greatest ever Australian Managers too…

View attachment 199767

In a month where he saw his team lift the title it was only fitting that McGhee was awarded the Manager of the Month award. Sigurdarson and his 7 goals were pipped to the Player of the Month by Adam Le Fondre and his 8 goals.

April 2018 – Cruise Control

With the title wrapped up McGhee chose to use the remaining games as a test ground for players who haven’t seen as much of the paddock as other this season, those who are coming back from injury and to see what he has in his younger brigade.

The month started with a trip to stadium:mk to take on the Dons and Swindon, playing with gusto off the back of their league win, skipped out to a 3 goal lead thanks to efforts from young stiker Will Randall (2) and Tottenham loanee Central Defender Carter-Vickers on his return from injury. Unfortunately the quality of their play fell away a little in the 2nd half and that was all MK Dons needed to roar back into it – scoring 3 unanswered to level the match. It would finish in a draw and frankly the Don’s deserved it, to come back from 3 nil down against the Champs would have taken real spirit.

View attachment 199471

Back at the County Ground then for the 2nd match of April and Notts County were the opponent. Oduwa got the start up front alongside side the last match’s hero Randall and scored the opener just after half time. Pantic continued his amazing season with a goal just after the hour mark that effectively sealed the win for Swindon.

View attachment 199470

“Chuffed, really chuffed!” Was McGhees reply when he was interviewed after Swindon’s match against Yeovil. Having started both his young strikers he was exceptionally pleased to watch them combine for 3 goals today.

View attachment 199469

In addition to the 2 young stikers who have made Charlie feel as if there is no need to improve that part of the squad in the offseason young attacking midfielder Jordan Stewart has made him believe that he will only need to bring in the single attacking midfielder on loan next season. Here he scored a hat trick as Swindon dismantled Rochdale 4 nil.

View attachment 199468

After his sublime performance aginst Rochdale McGhee was really pleased to see Jordan Stewart pick up the player of the month award for April. Also pleasing was seening Oduwa in the running. On the Young Player of the Month award it was then a race in two between striker Will Randall and defender Carter-Vickers and Randall’s goal proved to be the determining factor.
