The Better Half´s Tactical Sets (No Wizard)

nice results with bolton :P i was trying to go through the whole of FM10 without downloading tactics but i think im going to have to try 1 or 2 of yours out, currently man city been changing on and off from a 4-3-3 DM and a 4-2-4 CM and i get a few good results against bigger teams then i play people like wolves or wigan and either lose or draw and with the players i have i should be winning these games lol

The Arsenal Project - Playing with a top team

First match

Starting version: Attack away
Reasoning: I though of Balance but as I suspected that they would sit deep and keep possession, I chose attack away to put t pressure on them higher up in the pitch.

We dominated chances and went up 3-0. After that, we stopped playing and they sunk even deeper, resulting in HUll keeping possession and control over the game

In the 2nd half, we switched to Control as they had no intention of attacking ( i.e, low mentality, few t-balls but not using counter attack). We scored another goal and saw the game out

The Arsenal Project - Playing with a top team

CL qualifier

Starting version: Balanced
Reasoning: Playing in Europe can be trickier than one thinks and I wanted to start more careful.

Unfortunately, we played rather poorly and it was clear that we sat too deep and whilst having possession, we did not create much. At halftime, I had 2 choices. I.) switch to attack awy or 2.) use Counter.

Reasoning: With attack away, we play more attacking but also with a higher d-line and as they used AMC-FC-FC, I was afraid of balls over the top of our defenders for their drifting FC´s to run onto, crossing it in to the AMC. Therefor, I switched to Counter as I suspected that would be able to do the same.

Again, we played poorly and our attackers failed to put the ball away

The Arsenal Project - Playing with a top team

EPL Match 2

Part one

Starting version: Control
Reasoning: Knowing from the scout report, and from previous experience, Wolves like other lesser tams in the Prem, play a cautious approach within a defensive formation - The 4141

We won this very comfortable. Looking at the match stats, you can see that Wolves also had a good passing completion as they did not use counter attacks but kept the ball on the ground when trying to build up attacks in a slow and cautious manor. In the end, they had no chance as we here 2 up early in the first half

Denilson

Looking only at his rating, you might think that he had a day off but when looking at his stats, you will see that he worked hard and most of all, made 3 key passes within in great passing completion

The reason why his rating is low lies in his poor finishing but then again, these are shots taken when there was no other way out, Wolves playing with so many men in their own box. This is something that will happen when using a narrow formation, playing slow and when facing an ultra defensive formation. So in the end, if still getting the result - I would not worry so much about it ( player wise)

-But if looking more closely, uou can also see that most of his passes comes when he is positioned to the left of the pitch ( he plays in MCL) and the shots when he is positioned to the right of the pitch. This is simply because we provide more width to the left, the AMCright not cuting inside whilst the AMCleft does. Here, when playing our Control version, we might have a problem. Solution - Make the Left AMC provide width as well to stretch the defence

The Arsenal Project - Playing with a top team

CL Q, Match 2

Starting version: Control
Reasoning: Once again, I wanted to control the game, seing us being the superior team

We controlled the game with ease. Here, you can see that in the absence of a opponent DMC, our MCleft, just like Denilson played in the previous match, and our FC are able to connect and find space much better and Fabregas made 2 assists, RVP putting away 2 goals

After going up 3-o, I switched to defensive and saw the game out, scoring 4-0 in the final minutes

Anderlecht - They played a quick and direct counter game but their drifting FCs simply had no support at all and stood no chance against our 5 defensive players

Nice stuff. You must spend so long on these tactics. I will get round to trying them one day as I hear very good things. :)

The Arsenal Project - Playing with a top team

Match 3

Starting version: Control
Reasoning: Once again, I wanted to control the game, seeing us being the superior team

We used a high closing down game with the attacking players putting in some really hard work and it payed of. All goal where scored after our MC/AMC had broken up attacks high up in the pitch

The Arsenal Project - Playing with a top team

Match 4

Starting version: Balanced
Reasoning:This is actually the main starting tactic. When facing good team on the road, i like to start with balanced and take it from there, making changes to what I see on the pitch

In this match, we controlled the events but when looking at he screenshot, you can se that we had 10 long shots of which 5 was made in a hurry as the middle of the pitch was too crowded. Most of these shots was made after going 2 -o up so its not a problem as such. But if still wanting to stick to the balanced version, avoiding these things, then just widen the formation by pulling out the wide amcs into amr and aml

The Arsenal Project - Playing with a top team

Match 5

Starting version: Balanced
Reasoning: Once again, we started with Balanced as it is a balanced version. Sometimes, users think that you should go one version down away to teams like this, but then this would mean Counter and that version I only use as an in-game version when I am certain that there is something to counter space to exploit etc. So, her my choice was Balanced or defensive and the later would have been just to defensive

When looking at the screen, the stats suggests that Man U had good chances in the final 3rd but this could not be more false. All their CCC´s where bad angle one-on-ones from a striker moving out of angle and was easily saves by or GK. But the stats do tell us something else namely that both teams played direct ball over the midfield and kept possession in advanced positions. Here, Control - with a lowered d-line - or attack away with the same tweak would probably have worked like a charm, at least until they had switched strategy but defensive and counter would have made us it too deep, playing up ball in haste and/or just being plain to passive

In the end, I am ever so pleased with the win

you work so hard and barely anyone gives feedback, only a few do, ill start doing it mate, i feel a little bad

Any chance you could make more plug and play tactics? the ones you created for 09 where top notch.

I don't think she is going to be making any 'Plug and play tactics' I did ask her on msn and i am sure she said she is just going to be making sets.

For you people who don't know, she also has a site with her tactics on. - http://thebetterhalf.n.nu/

Any update on the Arsenal story??? Always enjoy the read!

Any update on the Arsenal story??? Always enjoy the read!

I have finished the season but as it seems like the interest in the approach behind the tactics or the projects are second to none, I have not made any updates and just played the save.

Dont misunderstand me, I am not craving for feedback or attention but as making screenshots, cutting and pasting, writting the things etc takes some time and effort, I will only do it if anyone actually reads it and gets any help from my tactical reasoning

Totally understand. I imagine it is time consuming! I am a massive fan of your tactics. You play football in the right way with a more realistic approach. I'm currently using your tactics in my Liverpool save with good success.

Hi Better Half, i used you tactics in 09 with brilliant success, so thanks, I have just bought FM10, was gonna start life at Leicester or Southend, not sure yet, which set would you advise?
Is FM10 alot different to 09 tactically speaking?? Thanks mate keep up the great work

If you have just bought the game, My advice would probably be to use a slightly better team in your first save to learn about the differences that this games provides. play around with the teamtalk, play around with some of the extreme settings when using the tactics and then watch some games in full mode.

After that - and after the final patch is released in late Feb/Early March, then have a look at my thread for more information as how to use the sets. i think you will find it much user friendly after its coming reconstruction in March

Decided to play some more with my Bolton team, now being a top team in the year 2013/14. I am using a narrow 4231 with the wide amcs dropped into MR,L in the versions Counter and Defensive

More fixtures with Bolton 2013/14

For these matches, I am using the narrow 4231 with the 2 MCs dropped into DMC ( deep and narrow ) in the versions defensive and counter

NEW: The Mix & match Set approach Download link

Important. hen looking at the lone FC, dont use a slow big guy, no matter how stonrg he is, no matter how good he is at fininshing. He has to have good movements and for that, he needs some pace

Here, the though is hat you should mix & match between formations to suit the squad at hand. In my current save, I have the team to play a wide 4231 and as my 2 central midfieders can also play in the DMC-spot, I tweak the versions Counter and Defensive so that the formatiopn becomes a deep and wide formations in those versions. In my previous save, I hade to players that could both play in AMC and in MR/L and therefor, I chose to play a narrow 4231 as defulat and tweak the more defensive version by dropping the AMCr and AMCl into MR and ML, making it a 4411. If you want, you could play the same formation in all versions but in my experience, its netter ( if possible) to use a more defensive formation in the more defensive versions

My current save: tweaking the formation to suit the squad at hand.

I have a good DMC/MC playmaker type, a AMR and a ML

Re: FM2010 - The Better Half - Tactical Sets, NO TC
First test with 10.3, using the mix & match framework -( Playing all night

)

Normal versions: Balanced ++ ( former attack away) and Balanced using the asymmetrical 451 formation in the screen

Attacking versions: Breakdown ( former control) and Attack ( former Attack home) pushing up the MR into AMR, making it a wide 4231

Defensive versions: Quick Counter ( former counter) and Defensive, dropping the AMR into MR, making it a 4411

Table and formation

Sounds like a really good season. Did you play attacking in the league and more cautious in Europe ?

In Europe I was more cautious, I think also I became better at selecting which tactic later on in the season.
I lost 1 game in europe, home against Munich which was 1-3. Had more chances and shots, but it happens
In the league I attacked all my home games, going unbeaten an drawing only 2 games scoring 46 and conceding only 11. Away from home I was more cautious, so naturally didn't score as many, I was happy only conceding 11 on the road. Lost my last 2 away games, but seemed to pick up some bad injuries and had the CL final playing on my mind too.
I changed players long shots to rarely after about 10 games which saw me create a few more chances for my striker.
Delph was my undoubted player of the season, scoring 14 and assisting 9 from the right of central midfield (without playmaker role)

Just starting a new season, I'll let you know how it goes!
