But Jose said he was poor defensively?

He's not wrong. This single match doesn't make Mata good defensively any more than it makes him bad. Hyperbole from all sides at the moment I feel.

Is this where I point out Mata was played nominally right of centre and made more tackles than anyone else on the pitch?

Yup, was also right up there in covering the most grounud

Alcaraz stop it, its embarrassing. First you scorn the transfer story say its 100% bad Chelsea, then you downplay it and laud jose, now you try to undermine how Mata played, despite the fact he actually did the opposite, tracked back hard and won almost all his tackles, created, and got an assist.

I agree. Just that people making observation about not tracking back after attacker losing possession is taking it to the extreme IMO.

This is a nutshell. He's certainly not a defensive stalwart. But this is also a terrible game to use to underline that, because he did the opposite

Dude firstly the reasons I found this transfer story absurd is not because we were selling Mata but because we were selling him to United. Another reason why I found it absurd was that it would leave is ridiculously short on depth but that was fixed quickly. I never actually lauded Jose for selling him at all ... Was merely reporting a couple of observations someone else made on a fan site. I think we all pretty much know that mata isn't exactly a defensive stalwart anyways

As I said, the decision to sell Mata is sound. I think everyone will agree on that. The decision to sell him to United was the retarded bit

Fair enough, as I said before posting ... I was not watching the game

Mata's defensive awareness is my favourite topic of all.

Only because Jose brought it up.. funny how it was never mentioned in here before.

Fact of the matter is while he isn't great at it... he certainly isn't bad either... that was demonstrated today.

Well he wasn't wrong to bring it up tbh ... People kept asking him why he played Oscar over Mata and that was the reason after all

What? Leave Jose out of this for a change. I'm just saying, the name Mata and the word defense should not be in a same sentence. That's all.

He's a no.10 of course it shouldn't... bit of a moot point. I'm always talking about Terry's attacking qualities.

They never were last season. Because no one cared or thought about it.

It's not all about his tracking back because he can do that and did do that for us but because he done that he suffered. He spent most of the Southampton game behind the half way line and when he does get the ball back he is not the type of player who will take on his man when 1v1 he will always look for the pass. Its also about the intensity of his pressing he is very poor at that, just look at how Oscar, Willian, Hazard and Schurrle does it and you will see what Jose meant, and the difference with the players i named is if they fail to win the ball high up but win it further back instead they will take on their man and normally beat him too. Jose's reasons for not playing Mata are totally fair, people just didn't want to accept it.

Certainly. The type of football Mourinho is playing relies on EVERYONE pressing at the same rate and time. Mata couldn't do that, and so his lack of work rate broke the formation entirely.

Mata certainly tries to help with the defense, you can't blame him for being lazy, that was never an issue. He's just awful at it. His lack of any physical presence doesn't help when trying to win ball back vs. opposing full back or defensive midfielder who are usually a lot more athletic.

Not exactly lack of work rate, but pace, I reckon. Mourinho wanted Mata to play on the right wing because Mata isn't the type who'll fit Mourinho's no.10's bill. It was analysed from a tactical point of view. Mata doesn't have the pace like Willian/Schurrle/Hazard and now Salah to run up and down, Mata gets stuck in a limbo while doing so.
