I don't think Chelsea would risk the lad if he had the potential to put him out for a long time. I'm hoping Spain don't call him up for the next break so he can have 2 weeks off.

It's a bit hypocritical of Jose to ask for Spain not to call him up but continue to play him himself really.

Which is highly unlikely. They don't really have anyone of Costa's calibre to replace him with. Hopefully, he will be left out. It depends on who Spain faces, and to be honest I haven't checked yet.

Edit: Slovakia. They could afford leaving him home, but they probably won't.

I'd be surprised if they left him home, but I wouldn't be if they started Paco Alcacer. He's looked a much better fit for the national team than Costa.

Costa doesn't suit the way Spain play at all. He is as good as Fernando Torres in the La Roja colours. Hopefully that's an excuse to leave him behind :P

...the same Fernando Torres who ******* destroyed Euro 2008 and scored the winner in the final?

Non-Liverpool fans used to look under the bed for Torres when they went to sleep in 2008.
I am assuming Alcaraz compares Costa's performance for Spain with the ones of the actual Torres.

Even in FM, how many times did we buy that great awesome player that just didn't do **** for us, because the style you imposed doesn't suit him? Costa and Spain (as it plays now) are not very compatible.

Well I am comparing him to the player that Torres is now for Spain. In 2008, he was absolutely immense. Best striker in the world imo

Pretty sure he will play. Unless he just tried to **** his way into the WC cup and now he will blow them over, which wouldn't surprise me.

He didn't operate well with Xavi and Alonso but with those two out Fabregas is likely to start...so yeah .

Torres still has an international striking record of just over a goal every third game, which is pretty good. Over the course of his career he's been an effective striker at international level.

The same Fernando Torres who was next to useless in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups

Every Spain player was useless in the 2014 world cup. Not sure what you're trying to say here. Saying Diego Costa will have a Torres career for Spain means that he's going to be good for them.

Oh i agree they won't leave him out, personally i don't think Costa suits their style but that's another argument.

I do agree it is but i don't care, i and Jose supports Chelsea not Spain lol.

Wanted to see the highlights of the game a few times before i wrote my bit as my stream on Saturday kept dying on me. Kind of 50/50 on this result/performance as we know Villa players have been suffering with some sort of virus for the last week or so and got humbled at home by Arsenal by the same scoreline last week.

But all my negatude (negative attitude for anyone who doesn't watch Bad Education) out the way i was very impressed with our performance and certain players performances. Willian and Oscar had their best games of the season by a country mile and Fabregas was outstanding yet again.

I seem to say this every week but lets go through it again shall we. I love the fact we have finally got a flat track bully, yes i know that is someone who only scores against the "smaller" sides but that is exactly what we need. Luis Suarez scored only 1 goal against the top 7 sides last season yet nearly fired Liverpool to the title and would have broken the Premier League scoring record if he didn't miss the first 8 games. He is the perfect example of a flat track bully and we have our own one now and i am loving it! Costa hardly scored against the big 2 (Real Madrid and Barcelona) in Spain last season i believe it was just the 1 goal in 7 odd games. But Atletico won the title because they didn't Stevie G up (slip up) against the smaller sides like we did last season. Lets not forget last season we were unbeaten against the other top sides last season. But don't get me wrong although he hasn't and will continue to not score against the top sides that doesn't mean he isn't contributing. Because he is such a handful both of the top sides centre backs will have to battle him together (like Kompany and Mangala did last week) which gives more space for our other special players to do their thing.

The biggest thing to take out of this game was a clean sheet, they have been few and far between this season and that will impress Jose the most no doubt about that and lets hope we can build on that.

Next fixture Sporting Lisbon ( A ) on 30/09/14 @19:45 on SkySports.

Our last result vs Portuguese side Benfica (Europa League Final) 15/05/2013: Benfica (Cardozo) 1-2 (Torres, Ivanovic) Chelsea.

Our last result in Portugal, Benfica (Champions League Quarter Final 1st leg) 27/03/2012: Benfica 0-1 (Kalou) Chelsea.
THE ABOVE ALSO OUR BIGGEST WIN ALONG WITH.
Porto, 25/11/2009: Porto 0-1 (Anelka) Chelsea.

Our biggest defeat on Portuguese soil, Porto 07/12/2004: Porto (Diego, McCarthy) 2-1 (Duff) Chelsea.

Our record on Portuguese Soil (all comps): Played-4, Won-2, Drawn-1, Lost-1, For-4, Against-3

My stat of the game: This is the first meeting between Sporting Lisbon and Chelsea.

The last 2 Champions League matchday 2 games Chelsea have won 4-0.

Chelsea have not lost a Champions League matchday 2 game since 2003 when we lost 2-0 at home to Besiktas.

Hmm so what exactly is your point? Are you trying to say that Torres is a good international player? Maybe you should check his striking record over the last 3 years instead of spouting out numbers that are obviously heavily skewed because of the period when he was actually a world-class striker and banging in goals for fun

Torres has still done well for Spain a lot since he signed for Chelsea E.G he won the golden boot at euro 2012.

I guess I'm saying it's ridiculous to write off Costa after 5 games at international level, the majority of which were in an absolutely awful Spanish world cup side, and to compare Costa to a striker who has on the whole had an excellent international career is reductive.

Honestly I was making the point partly in jest as I also mentioned how I was hoping he would be 'rested' during that period and comparing him to Torres. I am not writing him off at all but I still think Spain's system does not really play to his strengths

Come on mate. I remember that tournament well. He scored two goals against a **** Ireland side and another goal against 10 men Italy in he finals if memory serves right. Plus he bagged a assist against those 10 men as well

Schurrle really needs to improve his finishing. Wasted a lot of chances this season.

Well if we have learnt one thing tonight it is body check Diego Costa and you end up with a broken face.
