Think about it this way. If he does well and Barca buys him back. They get a free loan + 1 million euros.

Really don't see a problem with buy-back clauses and if a club agrees to it then it's their own fault, not the seller's.

I agree with this. its a ridiculous stance, but its not forced on the club

Interesting to hear Romeu's quotes, wont be over committal to the football club I imagine. Bojan basically said ''I'm here to prove myself and then go back to Barcelona as the player they always thought I could be,''

Only bright side is that fee negate clause, that 20+ million may be worth it if he steps up...

Every time he gets some praise in the media I can see this cropping up, the whole thing completely sits uneasy with me. Agree on Chris' point, why on earth did we allow this?

Still relishing seeing Oriol in action, think he will show what he's capable of. The way Chelsea train players will help him as well in my opinion, build him up physically can only improve his game...

Just can't see this 'Cesc Fabregas clause' trend being a good thing for football. The player transferred can never be fully committed to the football club in my opinion, any given week he could be transferred back. Say what you like about Fabregas but from day one he has been committed unquestionably to Arsenal football club. Different I know since, you know, Arsenal made him the player he is today and he has spent longer at Arsenal than he did at Barcelona's academy.

Just can't see this buy back clause trend ending well for anyone.

Staying away from the ridiculous clause. I can't wait to see Romeu in action, I hope he gets game time this season with Essien out. With a name like Romeu he'll have a few good songs too ;)

But for a club of Chelsea's size, surely you can see how that's a little embarrassing -- fine if they just call it a loan, but as Jamie said, it leaves the buying club a little in limbo. Either he develops well at Chelsea for 2 years, and Chelsea get £5-7m for him (so he may as well have been their player in the first place, and Barca are just buying him in the same way Chelsea are, except they're buying a better player for the same price) or Chelsea have to pay way over the odds to keep him.

Apart from Barca...

Not really related to Chelsea, but I find it funny how Bojan is a worse football player now than when he was 18.

BARCA ARE ***** WHAT do you all expect? i knew they'd put a cesc clause there.

Strange thing is that they are in 400 million+ debt and we essentially have none...

In a strange off the topic point it proves that money doesn't necessarily buy you power.

All I can think of is AVB really wanted this guy and told Gourlay to get him ASAP for a reasonable fee.

My fear is that we let Emenalo do the negotiations... *sigh*

Am I the only Chelsea fan that would want Owen Hargreaves?

If he stays fit he could be very useful, definitely could play the Ballack/Deco cameo role pretty well and on cheap wages.

Get him on 40k a week pay as you play sort of deal and then see where we go from there.

Would welcome him with open arms at Chelsea.

Lol. Pretty random point - if we sign a player from Barcelona he does "OK" or "brilliant". So Romeu could be either...

Also - apparently he has a buy-back clause in his contract, and Barca have first option of re-signing him if that falls through. So essentially Chelsea have signed him on loan for 2 years. Have fun with Cesc saga v2!

Quote from FCB website:

"The deal includes a buy-back clause of 10 million Euros after a year, rising to 15 after the second year."

Is it obligatory buy back clause? If not will the clause expire after 2 years?

Expires after the 2nd year but they then have first option for the rest of Oriol's Chelsea career...

Clearly Emenalo negotiated this one.

Chelsea have a fee negation clause like I said but it's a pretty extortionate amount of money altogether.

I know. It's essentially a development loan - Chelsea/Roma give Barca's youngsters playing time so they develop quicker and if they're good enough in 1/2 years time, Barca simply buy them back or Chelsea/Roma have to pay twice as much as the player is really worth (Roma would have to pay - in total - €40m to sign Bojan permanently).

Pretty bad deal for the buying club IMO. But great for Barca.

EDIT: I look forward to Jacko's reaction when Xavi and co. pop up in a year's time saying Romeu has Barca DNA and is simply on loan at Chelsea - like Cesc is apparently on loan at Arsenal. Except this time - Xavi will actually be right.

If the player wants to stay at Chelsea he will, if he is weak and gives into Barca then he can go simple as that.

Jamie.: Exactly. But that "ray of hope" means you end up paying far more than he's really worth. Bojan - bar something incredible happening - isn't going to be worth €40m in 2 years time. Romeu - however good he may be - almost certainly won't be worth €27m.

And you know if Chelsea resist, Barca will simply kick up a fuss and tap him up like with Cesc...

How do you know he wont be worth that much in 2 years time?? Gareth Bale wasent worth 10million 2 years ago and now look at him!!! Things change very quickly in football and prices go up rapidly at times and in certain circumstances.

Im not bothered with this whole buy back clause at all, If Barca try to get him back then he will first of all want to go to them and then they will have to pay the fee and if a player isent 100% commited to this club then good riddence.

Insted of everyone looking at the negatives of this deal im looking forward to seeing the lad play for his club (which is Chelsea not Barcelona). Hoping he can get a few first team appearences this season maybe in the cups or late on in games etc.

I think you are yes, the only thing he would do is keep Michael Essien company in the treament room.

Very harsh.

I know it was a while ago but at Bayern Munich he was one of the best defensive CMs in Europe.

Could still do a job, and if we signed Benayoun who was very injury prone...

I personally would welcome him, then again I would welcome Inzaghi/Del Piero.

And CJACKO, he will play alot more games than you expect believe me.

AVB has talked about him in every interview, twisted a Moutinho question on Portugese TV and started talking about the kid I really think Oriol will play 20+ games this season.

And along come Barca..

If he does amazingly well then I guess CFC will activate the negation clause (Common sense dictates)

I'm expecting the ECA to step in on this clause issue by the end of the year, really sense some sort of action is brewing.

Watch this space...-

Benayoun league games last five years: 29, 30, 32, 30, 6.

Hargeaves league games last five years: 9, 23, 2, 1, 1.

If Benayoun is 'very injury prone' then what's Hargreaves?

Harsh but lets be honest its true. Well if he plays more than that then i'll be happy. Dont think he will get a game until our Carling Cup 3rd round tie though.

Benayoun league games last five years: 29, 30, 32, 30, 6.

Hargeaves league games last five years: 9, 23, 2, 1, 1.

If Benayoun is 'very injury prone' then what's Hargreaves?

Walking dead!!!!

He's unlucky.

He seems to be fit again, chronic knee problem (might) be fixed.

And it would be on a free, pay as you play deal.

Why would anyone be opposed to that?

I'm probably being deluded, I'm known for choosing players on nostalgia rather than current situation...

If I was coaching AFC/MCFC/CFC and Hargreaves knocked on my door for free and asked for a pay as you play...And he showed his fitness then for me it would be a no brainer.

Romeu will undergo the usual fitness programme CFC put every new player on, it is brutal. Will attempt to build up muscle mass and cut off any fat that's not needed working on reaching his C/V plateau and then CFC normally would introduce him.

That's the usual way, Luiz adapted very quickly I suspect Romeu's physique means that he can be introduced to the first team as a sub/in some capacity by mid-late September.

with the 25 players in a squad, wouldn't it be a risk to have someone who could only play a couple of games?

Good point.

It depends on how many U-21s we have as well, if there was an extra spot that we all knew was available...Would you take him?
