He'll go to whichever offers him the most money.

I wouldn't be surprised if Chelsea are still paying his wages considering its only a loan, can't offer him 'more money' on a loan anyway, they just pay his current wages, nothing extra...

This is awkward...

Sorry if you misunderstood me I clearly said that money could go TOWARDS play makers with potential and young. Eriksen or Gotze would come straight into our squad. Both cheaper and younger. The 40m could go TOWARDS these two players.

Gotze just signed a contract till 2016. You are not getting him for less than 40m. Eriksen would cost around 20m and he isnt even a scratch on Modric.

Eriksen has potential to be near his level, what has Modric done that's really 'special' to make him worth 40m? Come on? How many assists has he got? Not much. Good passer but not a 40m player.

Sigh it isn't about the assists, otherwise Xavi, Scholes, and Pirlo would be ****, and not the 3 best playmakers of the last 20 years. It's his ability to dictate and control a game. Its his ability to spot the opening and hit a pass to any player at any range with pinpoint accuracy. All the supply to the key players comes from him. He makes the whole side tick, like Xavi does, or Scholes does. The fact that you talk about assists in relation to a player like Modric tells me you dont even understand wht kind of player he is. Eriksen hasnt shown he can be one of the top 5 registas in the world yet, which is what Modric is. What is special about Modric? The same thing that is special about the 3 players i just mentioned.

For me Modric is a good player but no where near Xavi, can't believe you have mentioned him with them. What did he do against Chelsea on the weekend? He was trash. Modric doesn't relish in the big games, if he does it happens rarely.

£40m!? But he never scores or gets assits!!

Callum, not sure why you liked this, its completely tongue in cheek, and taking a poke at your view of Modric. I really hope Roman takes the view that you do, leaves United free to take a run at world class playmaker.

Well I have previously said, Modric isn't worth 40m. Could go spent better else where. Modric is however on the other hand a good playmaker but not a 40m player. Tottenham was stuipd to reject 40m bid for him I'm really hoping Chelsea don't return with a 40m bid, less yes but 40m for Modric? haha. What a joke.

I had exacly the same view Callum had of Modric in the summer but after watching him closely this season there is a reason why he dosen't get too many assists. The goal VDV scored against Swansea a few weeks ago, the ball to Bale was from guess who??? Modric, Bale gets the assist and all the brownie points but it should be Modric. On a Chelsea Facebook page someone posted before the semi final "who do we use to stop Bale, Bosingwa or Ferreira". My response which was liked heavily, "you stop the provider which is Modric and Bale will be anonymous".

Lads big game tomorrow, just gotta say im gonna put a cheeky £10 bet on a 3-0 Chelsea win tomorrow. I bet ill get some good odds for that one.

Won't one day go by where I don't have to break out the Big Book O'Stats to show someone how wrong they are?

Except Modric has played 23 of his 31 appearances as a deep-lying central midfielder, and a a further five or so in withdrawn wing positions. These are not positions in which you assist from.

However, he has a 88% pass success rating, which is all the more impressive when you take into account the fact that he's attempted 277 long balls this season. This tell us that he's not doing a John Obi Mikel-style ball retention job: he's actively trying to move the ball forward into good positions. Of those 277 long balls, 232 were successful, which tells us he's got excellent decision making skills. He also plays over 68 passes per game, on average, which means he's both comfortable with dictating play and, in conjunction with the facts we're already gone over, very good at it. He's also good at dribbling out of tight spots, making about one and a half successful dribbles per game, and his tricky feet win fouls at about the same rate.

The final nail in the ridiculous 'he's **** 'cause he gets no assists' coffin? Luka Modric plays 2.7 key passes per game on average. Key passes are arguably far more effective than assists as a measure of a footballer's creative worth, as though they may be subjective, they record passes that may not necessarily involve goals. For example, if Modric beats three players and lofts a wonderful defence-splitting pass that Aaron Lennon blazes into the heavens, he gets no assist. He does, however, get a key pass, and thus it is less tainted by the team's inability to score or other such factors. So yes, he gets 2.7 key passes on average, per game.

You know, more than twice as good as Scholes' record for this season, and slightly better than Xavi's.

Modric is outstanding in the big games for the most part, been excellent again us and chelsea in the part, was devastating in the champions league last, picking out Bale with regular fashion.

Watch Xavi, then watch Modric. I never said he was as good as Xavi, but he is in the same class. You seriously need to pay more attention to Modric, its not about being flashy, is about pulling the strings.

Exactly. How do you stop Rooney? Stop Scholes. How do you disrupt Messi? Stop Xavi. You stop the man pulling the strings.

The ignorance towards Modric's ability in this thread is startling.

I agree but whenever I have watched Modric he has failed to impress me, I don't think it is about being flashy. I want another player like Mata at Chelsea, creative, decision making spot on and I would like the a player with the consistency that Mata has too.

I have never said Modric is a bad player, I think he is good.

40M? Na.

Could get Sneijder for that, but that's just my opinion. You have a different opinion to me. If we all had the same opinion it would be an extremely bad discussion.

And although yes Xavi is in a different league to Modric the way we stopped Modric on Sunday gives me encouragement going into tomorrows game.
