Not his job. Mourinho wasn't using him as a destroyer - Sami Khedira, and, to a lesser extent, Xabi Alonso's positioning were his lines of defence - he was playing an unfamiliar role as a passer rather than a runner. As Subtle pointed out, he played it pretty **** well, with a higher pass accuracy than anyone for City, and a couple of key passes into the bargain. He admittedly fell off in the second half, after I said that he was running the midfield, but considering this is his first Champions League match in a while and he's short of fitness as it was an admirable performance.
For bossing the midfield you need more than 2 key passes. If anyone bossed, then it's Xabi Alonso. I agree, it was great performance for a unfit player.

Anyone know the Juve line up?

Buffon, Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Liechsteiner, Vidal, Pirlo, Marchisio, Asamoah, Giovinco and Vucinic.

Bench: Storari, Lucio, Isla , Giaccherini, Marrone , Matri and Quagliarella.

Buffon
Barzagli Bonnuci Chiellini
Lichsteiner Asamoah
Pirlo Vidal Marchisio
Vucinic Giovinco

3-5-2 system

Mikel and Lampard are just getting destroyed. They look absolutely clueless about who to mark and they're letting Marchisio/ Vidal run into space all the time. Worrying stuff although that Oscar goal... Woof!

Not if your job isn't to play key passes it isn't. Carrick regularly bosses the midfield without playing key passes.

Ramires is dreadful ffs. Loses the ball too much, too easy

Ramires is not dreadful. He's on a bad run of form though.

This forums pro Mikel and I love his type of player but I've fallen out with him this game.. Terrible.

He's been up and down. That pass was awful, but he's made NINE interceptions, which is pretty remarkable. Terry's had a worse game in my eyes.

He just doesn't seem interested, so many bad passes. For Juves first he just stood and watched them attack, he probably wouldn't of stopped it but a little effort would be great.

So if his job is not to tackle players nor to play forward passes, then he's more limited than Diego Perez.

Don't be ridiculous. Carrick's job is not to tackle players nor to play forward passes. Neither is Mikel's. Does that mean they're bad players, or play badly? No.

Decent point for Chelsea, Juve are a very good side, but 2-0, probably will be disappointed..

Very poor from Mikel and then Terry for the equaliser though!

No. Both Carrick and Mikel sits deep and control the tempo. Essien's job was to provide cover for Arbeloa and later Marcelo. He got 51 completed pass, but most of them were back to Alonso and Khedira. Few times he tried to go forward, he lost the ball.

I think he'd find it hard to cover for Arbeloa, given he was on entirely the wrong side of the pitch from him. Essien's job was, essentially, to retain possession and harry opponents. Jose needed a player who could both pass reliably and run around a lot. Essien was the best fit, and considering he was short of fitness did both admirably.
