Schalke 04 Transfers - Summer 2009/2010

Here at FourFourTwo, we have been following Schalke with interest this season and we have, in general, been impressed with Martin O'Neill's signings. He has also let go a couple of players who were not up to challenging for top spot, generating some money in the process which will no doubt please the board.

joevertonvbolton001.jpg
Jo has signed on a season long loan and is looking to impress at the German club.

Jo is a player that interests us. When he signed for Manchester City for £18,000,000, he seemed like the next best thing. However, when others were signed that succeeded his ability, Jo was left to rot on the bench. After a spell at Everton, Jo moved to Schalke where he will be hoping that an impressive season at Schalke, could earn him a move away from Eastlands. £3,100,000 is a hefty loan fee for a season but Schalke could be looking for a cheap deal in the summer. Jo has impressed in Pre-Season alongside Huntelaar and he'll be hoping to continue that form.

donadel.jpg
Marco Donadel is a player that looks like he could go far at Schalke. He can pass, be creative and has a good tackle. He fits the O'Neill mould perfectly.

Marco Donadel has been a bit of an enigma in his career spanning 10 years. He played many games for Fiorentina, never really living up to the standard that was expected of him. After a bad campaign last year, Donadel was transfer listed and Schalke were quick to snap him up for a risky £4,800,000. Donadel is potentially a very good defensive midfielder and will go straight into the Schalke first team. At 26, this is his time to shine and O'Neill clearly wants that to be at Schalke.

vincentenyeama.jpg
Vincent Enyeama had an impressive World Cup last time round and is a real bargain for O'Neill.

Vincent Enyeama could be considered as O'Neill's signing of the season. He is an established goalkeeper, renown for his shot-stopping and agility. However, it only cost O'Neill £300,000 to snap up the in-form goalkeeper from Tel-Aviv. He will be expected to challenge Neuer in goal and could be in the first team in Schalke's opening match against Elvesburg in the German Cup. Enyeama has a lot of expectation on his shoulders but on his current record, could prove to be quite a signing for O'Neill!

Aswell as these three, Jeffrey Bruma was brought in on a season long loan to provide cover at centre back. A good start for O'Neill but the real questions will come with the performances on the pitch. Elvesburg should not prove to much of a challenge for Schalke, but we will be interested to see how O'Neill lines up. Rumours of a 4-4-2 Diamond are circulating round the club but as we know, O'Neill keeps everything quiet until the last minute. Schalke have a lot to prove, but these signings are a good place to start.

Great update Stu, I have a feeling this is going to be a really great story :) Looking forward to Chris' next update :)

Three of the new Schalke signings

Schalke's work in the transfer market was finally revealed yesterday, as the club unveiled NINE new signings.

Daniel Aquino(AM L/FC) - 1.5m from Real Murcia
Alan Smith(MC) - Loan from Newcastle
Valentin Stocker(AM LC) - Loan from Basel
Sabri Sarioglu(D/M R) - 1.2m from Galatasaray
Jordi Alba(AM L) - 500k from Valencia
Jermaine Jenas(DM/ AM C) - loan from Tottenham
Jesper Christiansen(GK) - 900k from Kobenhavn
Matthew Booth(DC) - 200k from Sundowns
Helder Postiga(ST) - loan from Sporting CP

The players were all unveiled at the press conference, and each got their chance to share their reasons behind the move.

Jordi Alba
I moved here because at Valencia, I seemed to be stuck on the bench, or playing for the reserves. I am just happy to get a chance to start again, with a new club, new country, and prove myself.

Helder Postiga
After being frozen out at Sporting, I had plenty of choices. At the time, Schalke came along, offered Champions League football, which is almost impossible to turn down. I want to come here, force myself into the team, and score goals.

Jermaine Jenas
After playing for Spurs, I just felt frustrated with the man management style of Harry Redknapp. I felt that a new club would re-ignite my passion for the game, and Schalke is hopefully the place to do just that.

Stuart Watson spoke about the way the club's reputation had helped him land the players. The most suprising signing was Sabri, who joins from Galatasaray, and will have to force himself past Uchida and Hoogland. When asked about his signing, Watson replied -

Stuart Watson
I feel that Sabri will offer a explosive option down the right, and has an incredible work rate.
The signings that the club has made are top drawer, and will serve us well this season.

Huntelaar's 85th minute goal sealed the win

Schalke narrowly escaped an upset in the first round of the DFB-Pokal meeting with Eintracht Braunschweig. Marco Calamita scored after just 3 minutes for the hosts, before Jendrisek equalised for Schalke. Dani Aquino latched onto a Jendrisek through ball to ****** the lead, before Calamita struck again after 35 minutes. Alan Smith restored the lead just before half time with a close range volley.
The second half was slow, and it took until 85 minutes for Huntelaar to grab the win for the visitors. Stefan Hauk made the last few moments nervy with a goal late into injury time.

After a nervy display, we managed to scrape through. Hopefully, the next game will be a lot better.

Schalke's players looking distraught after defeat.

Schalke's tart to the season was dealt a major blow as Bayern won 3-0 at the Veltins Arena. After several injuries, Schalke fielded a relatively weak side, with several first team players missing. Mario Gomez pounced on a mistake by Sarpei to make it 1-0 after just 3 minutes. Two minutes later Gomez popped up again, putting the ball past Neuer, with Schalke appealing for an offside. Hamit then pounced on 29 minutes, with a sublime strike from the edge of the area. Schalke never looked like scoring, and manager Ebbe Sand looked angry as his side's season started off in the worst way possible.

Ebbe Sand
After that performance, we didn't deserve to win. I would say we had more of the ball, but just lost it straight away once we got past the half way line. There is a lot to improve, but there is plenty of time. We are missing some players, and we hope to be a lot better against Koln next week.

Again, there is just something missing. Whether it is the finishing, or the build up, I need to fix it ASAP.
