I agree that it is highly unlikely and for me top four would be ridiculously hard - However looking at the fixtures again it is certainly not impossible. Liverpool are currently 8 points behind Man Utd and the next three fixtures:

LFC: Newcastle (h), Hull (a), West Brom (a)
MUFC: Man City (h), Chelsea (a), Everton (a)

Who knows, ey.

For me personally, I think it is in our best interest to sell Sterling if we receive a big offer for him, especially as it seems he doesn't want to stay. While obviously a very good player we are not talking about someone on the level of, say, Suarez. He has only got 6 goals and that is our biggest problem this season, nobody has more than that.

The truth is Sterling is the only player we have that can command a large enough fee where we can rectify the mistake of not finding a suitable replacement for Suarez and a replacement for Gerrard.

We have a lot of potential in the squad but we really need a couple of world class signing to get us back on track.

Completely disagree with this.

How can it be in our best interest to sell one of the best players in our squad, who in addition is just 20 years old and will only get better? It just can't.

There's only one way it could be in our best interest: We get a large fee, and use that money to buy (a) BETTER player(s). But think about it for a sec: Who on earth that is better than Sterling would we possibly sign, considering we'd be selling one of our best players? What world class player would want to sign for a club that is not good enough to challenge the teams that aren't good enough to win the title? No one.

Rectify the mistake of not finding a suitable replacement for Suarez and a replacement for Gerrard? We got ~£75m for Suarez last summer, we tried to replace him with Sanchez but he wasn't interested/Liverpool were negotiating forever over pennies while Arsenal came along and did the deal in no time. We got stuck with Balotelli, a guy who will never reach 30% of his potential.

The message alone given out by selling Sterling will be enough to damage us as a club. It's an admission of failure from the club. It's a confession that our strategy will never amount to anything. If we're supposed to grow talents, but sell our biggest talent at the age of 20, we're giving up.

He has 7 goals iirc, in a team that has been **** almost the entire season. And even the periods where we've been good, we haven't scored many goals. And did I mention he's just 20 years old? He can easily be a player who scores 15 goals a season, even more if he's consistent in a good team.

Telling ourselves it's in our "best interest" to sell Sterling is just fooling ourselves. That's trying to convince ourselves that it's not such a big deal if he leaves, because we're anticipating he's leaving. It IS a big deal if he leaves, for the reasons mentioned. If we wanna take a step FORWARD and not take a step backward at the same time, we need to keep players like Sterling, Coutinho and Can. Because if Sterling leaves, we're gonna sit here next year reading posts like "it's not such a big deal if Coutinho leaves". It's time to pull the finger out of our *****, smell it, and realize it stinks like ****.

United will beat City and Everton. We have a better chance of pushing City out of top 4, and that's not gonna happen either I'm afraid. Besides, the form we're in atm is horrendous. Even our last couple of wins (especially against Swansea) we were poor and fortunate.

>_> Who exactly is a suitable replacement for Suarez? And world class signings? You're forgetting one important factor that is required to attract WC signings - either consistently being good enough in the CL or being able to spend a shitload of money. Many TOP teams generally are able to do both. ATM, Liverpool are not consistently present in the CL recently, and you can't spend a shitload of money. So it is very difficult to get WC signings.

What you ideally need to do is hold on to your potential/current players, build a base, consistently get in the CL and then do what you said >_>

From the trend of it, if you sell Sterling, instead of replacing him with someone better, you'll probably have to go for potential rather than ability. And the cycle starts all over again..

Meh, if he wants to go, he can get to ****, to be honest. Ibe, in a year or two will be rated similarly, given Sterling's playtime.

Sorry guys for being a **** yesterday, it wasn't my intention to be one. I'll be more sensible in the future. If I insulted anyone, have my deepest apologies.

You never know - Majority of people were saying Liverpool would beat United and look how that turned out

Before these two games we were the most in form team in the country. Again, highly unlikely and personally I dont think it will happen but you never know for definite

I think you're underestimating Premier League's marketing power a tad. That's the benefit of playing in a league with huge global following, you don't necessarily need to offer 300k level wages. Guy who comes here and becomes Liverpool's superstar gets to reap huge marketing contracts for himself. That's why PSG and the like need to offer balls insane wages despite consistently making it high into Champions League knockout phase. The sponsor money just isn't there.

Going round the tabs this morning that Henderson has rejected a contract offer between 80-100k a week.

I don't think that's true. Considering Henderson's worth to Liverpool and his position as a player (captain imminent), I'd think he'd be above Sterling in pay grade.

You would have thought so but depending on what Henderson is on now, they may seem that a big enough rise. Also as being imminent Captain, maybe him and his agent think he is worth more being offered.

Just don't trust any media reports about these things (or in general for that matter) unless it's from trusted sources, like Tony Barrett and James Pearce. The worst thing we as fans can do now, is to start reacting on reports from untrustworthy sources. "Oh Daily Mail and <insert random tabloid here> says that Henderson and Sterling are leaving? **** them both."

Yeah, talks of Henderson leaving is way, way too optimistic at this point. He's behaved himself like a professional (unlike Sterling) despite having time ticking away on his contract. That being said, Liverpool will be in some really deep **** if they don't manage to tie Henderson to a new contract in the summer.

A few quotes from James Pearce about the current situation:

"Yes, I think Rodgers' position is safe regardless of what happens over the next six weeks."

"I'm certainly not aware of any 'bust-up' and the idea that the manager is facing a 'dressing room crisis' is ridiculous. Rodgers had a meeting with the players on Sunday but he does that the day after every game.
Were voices raised? Did various players say their piece? Of course they did. I'd be very concerned if that hadn't happened after such a disastrous performance against Arsenal."

"Aspas certainly won't be coming back and I can't see Alberto or Coates playing for Liverpool again.

As for Ilori, I'm not sure. The plan is for Teixeira to get a chance in pre-season and I think it will be the same with Wisdom. Sinclair, Williams, Jones and Ojo are all youngsters with potential and will all return to Liverpool."

"Currently, they [the club] are more confident the Henderson situation will be resolved. He wants to stay but wants more than the £80k per week he's been offered. I think a compromise will be reached. As for Sterling, I really don't know. The past week has fuelled fears at the club that his agent is looking to move him on this summer. But LFC have no intention of selling. It would take an offer of £50m plus for their resolve to be tested."

James Pearce webchat: Brendan Rodgers' position is safe, it will take £50m to test Sterling resolve and contract updates on Flanagan and Henderson - Liverpool Echo
