Doesn't look too bad

Well they'll be no Sturridge of any note until the NY (and heck knows how long after that it will be before he goes down again) so an experienced, reliable forward is still key.

The midfield looks a lot stronger there. Although that would leave them very narrow with Moreno in particular expected to contribute in attack and he got worse at both ends of the field the longer last year went on. And it's still full of holes at the back. Clyne's a great start, and hopefully the inconsistent Sakho really steps up as he needs to do now in year 3. But the LB, right CH and GK are still there by default as there's little else.

Been a very good summer of additions thus far, but it just shows how bad a mess the starting XI was to start with that theres still a lot of work to do the next couple of years.

Benteke still the main target with Liverpool waiting to see if Villa lower their asking price

Good to see we won't be paying £30mil+ but can't help but feel he is the wrong type of striker we should be looking at

Would it be that big of a surprise if he's thinking of Fermino as a striker?

It'd be foolhardy, but what it really be a surprise?

It's a catch-22.

He's integral to our system, because of what he brings. A non-stop motor. But he's the very definition of mediocrity as a footballer. When the rest of the team is flying, ala 2 years ago, he looks decent. But when the team is struggling, and others aren't carrying them, players like that stand out like a sore thumb and look what they are. Average.

Hendo is your typical modern day player. A great athlete but with little ability. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate what he brings with his work ethic and his attitude. But all things being equal we should be looking at better in the first XI.
I love it how people like to bash on English players. First Rooney, now Henderson. Both have not much to prove to be honest, especially Rooney. Rooney is set to become England's all time leading scorer, plays his heart out wherever he plays, double figures for goals and assists form 12 consecutive seasons (neither Messi or Ronaldo have achieved) scored in and won just about every club competition he's played in, scored against just about every big team out there (Chelsea, Arsenal, City, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Juventus etc) yet people still question him? He's the greatest ever striker playing football at the moment. He's also taken responsibility in the big occasions, which is why he has the biggest trophy cabinet of any player playing football right now. He's pretty much been Mr Manchester United for the last decade. He hasn't been as good as in his peak, however he has played in midfield for the past 2 season to keep other strikers happy, yet his goal/assist record is great for his position. He's still world class.

I still wonder whether people actually watch Henderson play. Not only is the the engine, but he is a very rounded midfielder. He isn't limited by any means. He has decent ability on the ball, a good first touch and he can tackle. He's relatively strong and has legs to get about the pitch. People underestimate the mental side of the game in a midfielder. Jordan Henderson is mentally strong and a great leader.

Sakho for captain?

We're in a very tight corner of our own making when it comes to who inherits the armband.

The only real capable vets. that we still have are Skrtel, the natural choice, and Toure. (Who's now sadly, down to age, well down the pecking order.). I'd discard Milner as I'd always be wary of giving a new guy the armband from the off and the possible resentment within the dressing room.

Can has all the makings of a future captain. Both one who can inspire by example and vocally. But he's far too inexperienced and hot headed at the present time.

Sakho I've always thought has all the makings of a strong leader. He's shown he can be a dominant centre half and has previous experience as the front man. But his continued inconsistency puts a question mark against him.

It really is slim pickings for an obvious candidate.

Benteke as the main target....

Liverpool had to spoil it....

Or we can take back Carroll.

That's always amused me as regards Rodgers.

He came in and said he was giving everyone a chance. Everyone bar Andy Carroll whom he'd decided from the get go wasn't good enough for his system, And he wasn't going to sacrifice that and go long come what may! I actually felt sorry for Andy there. Don't get me wrong, he was nothing like the quality that should be playing for Liverpool. But he had started to come into form the back end of the previous season under Kenny and did everything but win the Cup for us against Chelsea. And man could we of utilised him that first year when Suarez was out and we had nothing else. But he was the only player that was on the outside looking in. Barely even getting a chance in the friendlies.

Then last year, he goes and buys Ricky Lambert! Yet Carroll wasn't his type of player ..... and the hypocrisy didn't stop there as he got desperate to the point we ended games like Basle with Skrtel up front just launching it to him. But he'd never sacrifice playing football don't forget.

Now, since the end of last season, it's been open knowledge Benteke was the main target.

Very selective standards to suit at times 'r Brendan.

I can't believe ( or don't want too) that benteke is our main target. I just cant see him fit in our system.

Lacazette on the other hand...

Can I come in here and talk about football?
The United thread has been replaced by some kids twitter feed.

Getting a bit jelly with all these signings Liverpool are making.

At the end of the day is kovacic an upgrade on our midfielders. yes he is. simples.

Not really, hes probably a similar standard.

Henderson plays the ball forward more and had 3x the amount of assists of Kovacic.

Scored 1 goal more last year and had more shots on target.

Henderson contributes much more defensively too.

Then again Kovacic is much better running with the ball.

All in a 'stronger league'.

I know stats don't really say everything but I think it shows Kovacic isn't really any better at least.

Would be a good buy for liverpool but I wouldn't spend a huge amount on him

(Milner also racks up similar stats to these two aswell)

Very fool hardy. But no surprise with Brendan.

I think his main position will be AMC, but like with the national side, if there is a lack of options he will likely play as a striker on occasions
