Let's pray to whoever god we believe in for sturridge to stay fit.

And if he can deliver a little enlightenment to Rodgers, that could be a bonus.

I wouldn't go as far as saying "Can can't defend", that statement is just plain wrong. Sure, he's not a centreback, but he was actually one of our best in the back 3 last season. Not to mention the lack of quality we have in that department: Sakho is by far our best, Skrtel is only second because of his attitude and passion, and I'd say Can is better than Lovren. Forget Toure.

Personally I'd prefer us playing with a back 4, with Sakho and Skrtel as centrebacks. If any of those are out injured, I'd honestly be more nervous about Lovren or Toure than Can. But I guess that's just me.

Toure is an amazing defender. But he's not adjusted to being old and only playing like 1 match every 5 years. Which leads to him making massive mistakes. He's usually immense for 99% of the time and then then all of a sudden he inherits the brain of Dejan Lovren.

I get that his passing ability as a centrehalf is useful but just like last season he is targeted by other teams, Its just square pegs in round holes tbh. You want your centrehalf to be able to defend and well Can isnt a cb. Football is a simple game made complicated by fools, in this case the fools rodgers.

If only it was that simple - Currently, I honestly think Can at the back is the best formation and tactics to go with as it has produced our most positive results and performances recently

If you're going on form, Can shouldn't be anywhere near the side. He's been constantly out of position all season and making terrible decisions. (He should of gifted Gestede a goal yesterday. Thankfully he screwed it up even worse.). Until he learns to be tactically disciplined (which is bizarre in itself being he's German), he's a serious liability wherever you play him.

That is true. I like Can, he can become a superb player but he has started the season quite poor

Talking centre half, I never understood why we extended Wisdom just to loan him out again. He looked solid in Brendan's first season, received great reports ion Derby's promotion push a few years back, and had another solid first half of the year at West Brom last year before he bizarrely disappeared under Pulis. All whilst playing out of his natural position at right full back.

I'd much rather of he or the very surprising Gomez (what's he done wrong BTW? WELL arguably our most solid defender this season. He has one poor game against West Ham and he's suddenly demoted. A rash challenge at United? He's learning. Skrtle makes them all the time. Thought he had a good game at centre half in Bordeaux bar the goal. But the point being he's learning his trade and you have to accept any costly errors as he develops. Not drop him as soon as one happens. Even less so when he's been your best defender and one of your better players this season) been at the top of the group along with Sakho this year.

Moreno has been added in to provide a better attacking threat - which he has... Harsh on Gomez, mind.

Completely harsh. Even more so when you go to three centre backs and can't find a place for him there. His natural position.

Moreno would be better served ahead of him and just allowed to attack with the security of Gomez defensively behind him if he wanted more of an attacking threat wide for me. Instead he goes to a back 3/ 5 to fit him in as a wing back.

Which is completely the correct decision.

Whether Gomez should be played at CB is another discussion entirely

It seemed to work at a very successful Sevilla side

Did it? Honest question as I don't follow La Liga outside of keeping up with Eibar's results. Only asking a every time I've watched Emre's sides in Europe they've been 4-2-3-1.

But regardless, he's been pretty darn woeful here defensively. His first couple of games excepted. Consistently getting caught out of position.

Dude can't defend properly but is an attacking threat. Why not play him as a winger without any defensive responsibility? Same thing happened with Johnson.

Just because full back is good attacking doesn't mean he will be good winger. There are lot of variables to be considered, biggest of them all is overlapping runs and having space infront of them to run into.

So now we turn to a Derby week nobody currently wants, with a European game in the middle of it.

Which leads to the next big question. How badly will he mess with the side on Thursday?

If Bordeaux and his comments after are anything to go by it will be well weakened. Even more so with the Derby to follow next Sunday. Which is beyond asinine to me. You're running a serious risk of this group being out of reach after the middle back-to-bak's against Kazan. You can't go so inexperienced in Europe and keep expecting to get away with it.

I hope I'm wrong but if it's any side like Bordeaux I'm expecting a home European embarrassment against the 'mighty' Sion.

It doesn't but I'd sure as heck rather try a full back that can't defend/ is very weak defensively, but is decent going forward, as a winger/ wide midfielder with defensive cover behind him so he doesn't have to worry about that aspect of his game.

To keep exposing yourself repeatedly defensively with that type of player, like we've done for years with successive full backs that couldn't defend; is the definition of madness.

You can just bench him and play proper winger.

Outside of Ibe who's lacking confidence we don't have one.

Sign Benteke. Want to play with width. Don't carry any natural wingers.

The man is ahead of his time I tell yer'!

Not proper wingers but Liverpool have players like Lallana, Firmino, Coutinho who are capable of playing from left wing position and I'm sure they are better than Moreno.
